This paper introduces a wide-spectrum specification logic νZ. The minimal core logic is extended to a more expressive specification logic which includes a schema calculus similar (but not equivalent) to Z, new additional schema operators, and extensions to programming and program development logics.

The experiments carried out on the model of immobilization stress permit establishing the antiulcer effect of preventive introduction of sodium succinate solution, milk serum solution and solution of milk serum with sodium succinate. A decrease in the degree and number of ulcers and in the integrative indices characterizing the ulcer process after introduction of the studied drugs was accompanied by a fall of the intensity of lipid peroxidation processes.     

Benign breast changes and the risk for subsequent breast cancer: an update of the 1985 consensus statement. Cancer Committee of the College of American Pathologists

The Cancer Committee of the College of American Pathologists has prepared an update of the consensus statement on premalignant breast lesions and breast cancer risk that was originally published in the Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine in 1986. The objective of this publication is to better define the relative breast cancer risk associated with specific histologic abnormalities by incorporating data derived from recent case-control studies. Explanatory notes are used to document and explain specific risk classifications. In addition to refining the degree of risk associated with individual lesions, such as fibroadenoma and atypical hyperplasia, this update includes a discussion of age-specific breast cancer risk and provides examples that can be used when counseling patients.     

Position and velocity coupling of postural sway to somatosensory drive

Light touch contact of a fingertip to a stationary surface provides orientation information that enhances control of upright stance. Slight changes in contact force at the fingertip lead to sensory cues about the direction of body sway, allowing attenuation of sway. In the present study, the coupling of postural sway to a moving contact surface was investigated in detail. Head, center of mass, and center of pressure displacement were measured as the contact surface moved rhythmically at 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 Hz. Stimulus amplitude decreased with frequency to maintain peak velocity constant across frequency. Head and body sway were highly coherent with contact surface motion at all frequencies except 0.8 Hz, where a drop-off in coherence was observed. Estimation of the costs of acute gastrointestinal illness in British Columbia, Canada

The costs associated with gastrointestinal infection (GI) in the province of British Columbia, Canada, were estimated using data from a population-based survey in three health service delivery areas, namely Vancouver, East Kootenay and Northern Interior. The number of cases of disease, consequent expenditure of resources and associated economic costs were modeled as probability distributions in a stochastic model. Using 2004 prices, the estimated mean annual cost per capita of gastrointestinal infection was CAN$128.61 (euro207.96), with a mean annual cost per case of CAN$1,342.57 (euro2,170.99). The mean estimate of the overall economic burden to British Columbia was CAN$514.2 million (euro831.5 million) (95% CFI CAN$161.0 million to CAN$5.8 billion; euro260.3 million to euro9.38 billion). The major element of this cost was the loss of productivity associated with time away from paid employment by both the sick and their caregivers. Sensitivity analysis suggested that the uncertainty associated with the base model assumptions did not significantly affect the estimates. The results are comparable to those obtained in an earlier study using a similar analytical framework and data from the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.     

The Expression of Active CD11b Monocytes in Blood and Disease Progression in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Monocytes expressing the inflammation suppressing active CD11b, a beta2 integrin, may regulate neuroinflammation and modify clinical outcomes in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In this single site, retrospective study, peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 38 individuals living with ALS and 20 non-neurological controls (NNC) were investigated using flow cytometry to study active CD11b integrin classical (CM), intermediate (IM) and non-classical (NCM) monocytes during ALS progression. Seventeen ALS participants were sampled at the baseline (V1) and at two additional time points (V2 and V3) for longitudinal analysis. Active CD11b+ CM frequencies increased steeply between the baseline and V3 (ANOVA repeated measurement, p < 0.001), and the V2/V1 ratio negatively correlated with the disease progression rate, similar to higher frequencies of active CD11b+ NCM at the baseline (R = −0.6567; p = 0.0031 and R = 0.3862; p = 0.0168, respectively). CD11b NCM, clinical covariates and neurofilament light-chain plasma concentration at the baseline predicted shorter survival in a multivariable and univariate analysis (CD11b NCM—HR: 1.05, CI: 1.01–1.11, p = 0.013. Log rank: above median: 43 months and below median: 21.22 months; p = 0.0022). Blood samples with the highest frequencies of active CD11b+ IM and NCM contained the lowest concentrations of soluble CD11b. Our preliminary data suggest that the levels of active CD11b+ monocytes and NCM in the blood predict different clinical outcomes in ALS.     

Dynamic Matrix Control of a Bubble‐Column Reactor for Microbial Synthesis Gas Fermentation

A spatiotemporal metabolic model of a representative syngas bubble‐column reactor was applied to design and evaluate dynamic matrix control (DMC) schemes for regulation of the desired by‐product ethanol and the undesired by‐product acetate. This model was used to develop linear step response models for controller design and also served as the process in closed‐loop simulations. A 2 × 2 DMC scheme with manipulation of the liquid and gas feed flows to the column provided a superior performance to proportional integral (PI) control due to slow process dynamics combining the multivariable and constrained nature of the control problem. Ethanol concentration control for large disturbances was further improved by adding the flow of a pure hydrogen stream as a third manipulated variable. The advantages of DMC for syngas bubble‐column reactor control are demonstrated and a design strategy for future industrial applications is provided.     

EXTRACTED CONTROL APPROACH FOR CNC NON‐CIRCULAR TURNING

Non‐circular pistons are becoming increasingly popular in internal combustion engines as they facilitate the construction of a more efficient engine. However, at the moment, it is still a very expensive and time consuming procedure to cut non‐circular pistons, owing to practical problems which have yet to be overcome. This paper will examine these problems and highlight an Extracted Computer Numerical Control (ECNC) solution which can be used on existing Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) Lathes. A high speed linear servo unit is presented as an extracted part of the system. Repetitive control is also discussed in the paper.
