This ecologic study aimed to investigate whether differences in population mortality from lung, stomach and colorectal cancer among the 16 cohorts of the Seven Countries Study could be explained by differences in the average intake of anti-oxidant (pro)vitamins. In the 1960s, detailed dietary information was collected in small sub-samples of the cohorts by the dietary record method. In 1987, food-equivalent composites representing the average food intake of each cohort at baseline were collected locally and analyzed in a central laboratory. The vital status of all participants was verified after 25 years of follow-up. The average intake of vitamin C was strongly inversely related to the 25-year stomach-cancer mortality (r = -0.66, p = 0.01), also after adjustment for smoking and intake of salt or nitrate. The average intake of alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, and alpha-tocopherol were not independently related to mortality from lung, stomach or colorectal cancer, nor was vitamin C related to lung and colorectal cancer. 相似文献

The poisoning effect of carbon monoxide (CO) on high-temperature proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is investigated with respect to CO concentration, operating temperature, fuel feed mode, and anode Pt loading. The loss in cell voltage when CO is added to pure hydrogen anode gas is a function of fuel utilization and anode Pt loading as well as obvious factors such as CO concentration, temperature and current density. The tolerance to CO can be varied significantly using a different experimental design of fuel utilization and anode Pt loading. A difference in cell performance with CO-containing hydrogen is observed when two cells with different flow channel geometries are used, although the two cells show similar cell performance with pure hydrogen. A different combination of fuel utilization, anode Pt loading and flow channel design can cause an order of magnitude difference in CO tolerance under identical experimental conditions of temperature and current density. 相似文献

Trichinella spiralis has been reported to induce angiogenesis for nutrient supply and waste disposal by the induction of the angiogenic molecule vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF) during nurse cell formation. However, the action mechanism to induce VEGF in nurse cells by T. spiralis is not known. Hypoxia in nurse cells was suggested as a possible mechanism; however, the presence of hypoxic conditions in infected muscle or nurse cells and whether hypoxia indeed induces the expression of VEGF and subsequent angiogenesis in the infected muscle are both a matter of debate. Our recent studies have shown that thymosin β4, a potent VEGF inducing protein, is expressed in the very early stages of T. spiralis muscle infection suggesting the induction of VEGF in early stage nurse cells. Nevertheless, we now show that hypoxic conditions were not detected in any nurse cell stage but were detected only in the accumulated inflammatory cells. These studies propose that induction of angiogenesis by VEGF in T. spiralis-infected nurse cells was mediated by thymosin β4 and is unrelated to hypoxic conditions. 相似文献

The aim of this work was to investigate the immunomodulatory activities of Rubus coreanus Miquel extract-loaded gelatin nanoparticles. The mean size of the produced nanoparticles was 143 ± 18 nm with a bandwidth of 76 nm in the size distribution and a maximum size of ~200 nm, which allows effective nanoparticle uptake by cells. Confocal imaging confirmed this, since the nanoparticles were internalized within 30 min and heterogeneously distributed throughout the cell. Zeta-potential measurements showed that from pH = 5 onwards, the nanoparticles were highly negatively charged, which prevents agglomeration to clusters by electrostatic repulsion. This was confirmed by TEM imaging, which showed a well dispersed colloidal solution. The encapsulation efficiency was nearly 60%, which is higher than for other components encapsulated in gelatin nanoparticles. Measurements of immune modulation in immune cells showed a significant effect by the crude extract, which was only topped by the nanoparticles containing the extract. Proliferation of B-, T- and NK cells was notably enhanced by Rubus coreanus-gelatin nanoparticles and in general ~2-3 times higher than control and on average ~2 times higher than ferulic acid. R. coreanus-gelatin nanoparticles induced cytokine secretion (IL-6 and TNF-α) from B- and T-cells on average at a ~2-3 times higher rate compared with the extract and ferulic acid. In vivo immunomodulatory activity in mice fed with R. coreanus-gelatin nanoparticles at 1 mL/g body weight showed a ~5 times higher antibody production compared to control, a ~1.3 times higher production compared to the extract only, and a ~1.6 times higher production compared to ferulic acid. Overall, our results suggest that gelatin nanoparticles represent an excellent transport vehicle for Rubus coreanus extract and extracts from other plants generally used in traditional Asian medicine. Such nanoparticles ensure a high local concentration that results in enhancement of immune cell activities, including proliferation, cytokine secretion, and antibody production. 相似文献

Small black soybean (SBS), a kind of Glycine max L. Merrill, has various biological actions such as osteoblastic cell proliferating, anticancer, and antioxidant activity. Many studies have shown that thermal processing preserves the health benefits by enhancing antioxidant activity. In this study, we compared the antioxidant effects of SBS based on roast processing conditions using DPPH and ABTS assays. Additionally, we measured phenolic contents and Maillard reaction products (MRPs) to identify the factors that changed SBS antioxidant activity due to roasting. Furthermore, we performed MTT and ROS assays in PC12 cells stressed by H2O2 to investigate how roast processing increases SBS antioxidant activity in a cell culture system. The roasted SBS exhibited significantly higher antioxidant activity than unroasted SBS in the ABTS and DPPH assays. In particular, the roasted SBS at 250 °C for 30 min showed the highest antioxidant activity, compared to any other condition. Antioxidant compounds such as phenolic acid and MRPs increased in the SBS following roast processing. Moreover, the roasted SBS protected the PC12 cells from H2O2 toxicity by reducing ROS generation better than unroasted SBS. CH3NH3PbI3 is one of the promising light sensitizers for perovskite photovoltaic cells, but a thick layer is required to enhance light absorption in the long‐wavelength regime ranging from PbI2 absorption edge (500 nm) to its optical band‐gap edge (780 nm) in visible light. Meanwhile, the thick perovskite layer suppresses visible‐light absorption in the short wavelengths below 500 nm and charge extraction capability of electron–hole pairs produced upon light absorption. Herein, we find that a new light scattering layer with the mixed cavities of sizes in 100 and 200 nm between transparent fluorine‐doped tin oxide and mesoporous titanium dioxide electron transport layer enables full absorption of short‐wavelength photons (λ < 500 nm) to the perovskite along with enhanced absorption of long‐wavelength photons (500 nm < λ < 780 nm). Moreover, the light‐driven electric field is proven to allow efficient charge extraction upon light absorption, thereby leading to the increased photocurrent density as well as the fill factor prompted by the slow recombination rate. Additionally, the photocurrent density of the cell with a light scattering layer of mixed cavities is stabilized due to suppressed charge accumulation. Yellow sand dust (Asian dust storms) causes harmful damage indoors and outdoors during the springtime, and the removal of
Yellow sand dust has become an issue for suitable indoor conditions. An air cleaner is required to remove Yellow sand dust
efficiently to improve indoor air quality, and the removal characteristics of Yellow sand dust should be studied. The size
distribution and mass concentration of Yellow sand dust observed in China and Korea are analyzed, and the removal efficiency
of a plasma air cleaning system based on the principle of electrostatic precipitation is evaluated by using Yellow sand dust.
Mass median diameter of Yellow sand dust sampled in Beijing and Seoul ranges from 7.0 to 8.0 μm with a mass concentration
of 300-1,462 μg/m3. For a single-pass test, the efficiency of dust removal increases with increasing particle size and decreasing flow rate.
The removal efficiency of Yellow sand dust in a plasma air cleaning system at a face velocity of 1.0 m/s is higher than 80%.
For a multi-pass test in occupied spaces, the operation time required to reduce Yellow sand dust concentration from an initial
concentration of 300 μg/m3 to 150 μg/m3 is 10 minutes for a test room of 27 m3. 相似文献

The ionomer content in electrode is one of the most important parameters for the high performance of fuel cells. The high temperature PEMFC based on phosphoric acid (PA)-doped polymer membrane with unhumidified reactant gases has a difficulty in controlling the liquid state PA ionomer content in electrode. To evaluate the PA content in electrode, the three techniques of cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and acid–base titration (ABT) are carried out in situ or ex situ. The properties of membrane electrode assembly (MEA) such as electrochemical surface area (ESA), ohmic resistance, charge transfer resistance, double layer capacitance and the amount of PA in MEA components (anode, cathode and membrane) are extracted by each technique. Ex situ CV with the usage of dry gases has a limitation in assessing the reliable ESA of unhumidified PEMFC. While in situ EIS presents some informative values of resistance and capacitance for understanding the PA distribution in MEA, its sensitivity to the PA content in MEA components needs to be higher for detecting a subtle change in PA distribution. Ex situ ABT supplies a clear PA distribution in MEA at room temperature but does not seem to reflect the operating state well at high temperatures. However, it can be used as a detection tool for the loss of the initial acid content in membrane during a long-term MEA durability study. 相似文献
