Water treatment using TiO2 semiconductor as a durable heterogeneous photocatalyst has been the focus of environmentalists in recent years. Currently, we developed an inexpensive and highly efficient approach for synthesizing nitrogen-doped TiO2 with lower band-gap energy that can respond to visible light. Doping on the molecular scale led to an enhanced nitrogen concentration of up to 21.8%. Reflectance measurements showed the synthesized N-doped TiO2 nanoparticles are catalytically active with the absorbance that extends into the visible region up to 600 nm. The water purification potential of this new class of compound was evaluated by studying the photodegradation of Acid Orange 7 (AO7) and E. coli. Experiments were conducted to compare the photocatalytic activities of N-doped TiO2 nanocatalysts and commercially available Degussa P25 power under identical solar light exposure. N-doped TiO2 demonstrated superior photocatalytic activities in both chemical compound degradation and bactericidal reactions. The result of this study shows the potential of applying new generations of catalyst for wastewater purification and disinfection.  相似文献

Hyperlipidemia manifested by high blood levels of free fatty acids (FFA) and lipoprotein triglycerides is critical for the progression of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and its cardiovascular complications via vascular endothelial dysfunction. However, attempts to assess high FFA effects in endothelial culture often result in early cell apoptosis that poorly recapitulates a much slower pace of vascular deterioration in vivo and does not provide for the longer-term studies of endothelial lipotoxicity in vitro. Here, we report that palmitate (PA), a typical FFA, does not impair, by itself, endothelial barrier and insulin signaling in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), but increases NO release, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and protein labeling by malondialdehyde (MDA) hallmarking oxidative stress and increased lipid peroxidation. This PA-induced stress eventually resulted in the loss of cell viability coincident with loss of insulin signaling. Supplementation with 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide-riboside (AICAR) increased endothelial AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activity, supported insulin signaling, and prevented the PA-induced increases in NO, ROS, and MDA, thus allowing to maintain HUVEC viability and barrier, and providing the means to study the long-term effects of high FFA levels in endothelial cultures. An upgraded cell-based model reproduces FFA-induced insulin resistance by demonstrating decreased NO production by vascular endothelium.  相似文献

The influence of the chemical composition on the kinetics of the atmospheric corrosion of steel A total of 19 different structural steels were exposed to urban, rural and industrial atmospheres for periods up to three years. The evaluation of the weight losses determind at certain intervals permitted the establishment of a linear relationship which can be used for assessing, within certain limits of concentration, the influence of specific alloying elements. The tests showed that the effects of the different alloys varies with the type of atmosphere and with the degree of corrosion, and may well shift from “favourable” to “detrimental”. The results are also influenced by the quantitative ratios of certain components. The corrosion behavior of the steels is consistently governed by P, S and Cu and, to a lesser extent, by C and Mn.  相似文献

The methanol-burning lung model has been used as a technique for generating a predictable ratio of carbon dioxide production (VCO2) to oxygen consumption (VO2) or respiratory quotient (RQ). Although an accurate RQ can be generated, quantitatively predictable and adjustable VO2 and VCO2 cannot be generated. We describe a new burner device in which the combustion rate of methanol is always equal to the infusion rate of fuel over an extended range of O2 concentrations. This permits the assembly of a methanol-burning lung model that is usable with O2 concentrations up to 100% and provides continuously adjustable and quantitative VO2 (69-1,525 ml/min) and VCO2 (46-1,016 ml/min) at a RQ of 0.667.  相似文献

Neutral (G.GC, A.AT, G.AT, T.AT, and C(imino).GC) and protonated (CH+.GC and AH+.GC) hydrogen-bonded trimers of nucleic acid bases were characterized by ab initio methods with the inclusion of electron correlation. In addition, the influence of metal cations on the third-strand binding in Purine-Purine-Pyrimidine (Pu.PuPy) reverse-Hoogsteen triplets has been studied. The ab initio calculations were compared with those from recently introduced force fields (AMBER4.1, CHARMM23, and CFF95). The three-body term in neutral trimers is mostly negligible, and the use of empirical potentials is justified. The only exception is the neutral G.GC Hoogsteen trimer with a three-body term of -4 kcal/mol. Protonated trimers are stabilized by molecular ion-molecular dipole attraction and the interaction within the complex is nonadditive, with the three-body term on the order of -3 kcal/mol. There is a significant induction interaction between the third-strand protonated base and guanine. The calculations indicate an enhancement of the third-strand binding in the G.GC reverse-Hoogsteen trimer due to-metal cation coordination to the N7/O6 position of the third-strand guanine. Interactions between metal cations and complexes of DNA bases are in general highly non-additive; the three-body term is above-10 kcal/mol in a complex of a divalent cation (Ca2+) with the GG reverse-Hoogsteen pair. The pairwise additive empirical potentials qualitatively underestimate the binding energy between cation and base.  相似文献

Recently, oscillating magnetic fields in the MHz-range were introduced as a useful diagnostic tool to identify the mechanism underlying magnetoreception. The effect of very weak high-frequency fields on the orientation of migratory birds indicates that the avian magnetic compass is based on a radical pair mechanism. To analyse the nature of the magnetic compass of mammals, we tested rodents, Ansell's mole-rats, using their tendency to build their nests in the southern part of the arena as a criterion whether or not they could orient. In contrast to birds, their orientation was not disrupted when a broad-band field of 0.1-10MHz of 85nT or a 1.315MHz field of 480nT was added to the static geomagnetic field of 46000nT. Even increasing the intensity of the 1.315MHz field (Zeeman frequency in the local geomagnetic field) to 4800nT, more than a tenth of the static field, the mole-rats remained unaffected and continued to build their nests in the south. These results indicate that in contrast to that of birds, their magnetic compass does not involve radical pair processes; it seems to be based on a fundamentally different principle, which probably involves magnetite.  相似文献

In the developing forebrain, mounting evidence suggests that neural stem cell proliferation and differentiation is regulated by growth factors. In vitro in the presence of serum, stem cell proliferation is predominantly mediated by fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) whereas neuronal differentiation can be triggered by FGF-1 in association with a specific heparan sulphate proteoglycan. On the other hand, astrocyte differentiation in vivo and in vitro appears to be dependent on signalling through the leukaemia inhibitory factor receptor (LIFR). The evidence suggests that in the absence of LIFR signalling, the stem cell population is present at approximately the same frequency and can generate neurons but is blocked from producing astrocytes that express glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) or have trophic functions. The block can be overcome by other growth factors such as BMP-2/4 or interferon-gamma, providing further evidence that the inhibition to astrocyte development does not result from loss of a precursor population. Signalling through the LIFR, in addition to stimulating astrocyte differentiation, may also inhibit neuronal differentiation, which may explain why this receptor is expressed at the earliest stages of neurogenesis. Another signalling system which also exerts its influence on neurogenesis through active inhibition is Delta-Notch. We show in vitro that at high cell densities which impede neuronal production by FGF-1, lowering the levels of expression of the receptor Notch by antisense oligonucleotide results in a significant increase in neuronal production. Thus, stem cell differentiation appears to be dependent on the outcome of interactions between a number of signalling pathways, some which promote specific lineages and some which inhibit.  相似文献
