The proton magnetic resonance spectra of isomeric triglycerides of isovaleric and palmitic acids in the presence of the downfield
and upfield chemical shift reagents Eu(fod)3 and Pr(fod)3 were studied. The resonance profiles of the γ-protons on the isovaleroyl chains are distinctive for each of the four possible
triglyceride isomers at low shift reagent/triglyceride ratios. With either reagent, the well defined γ-methyl isovalerate
doublets can be used to identify 2-isovaleroyl and 1,3-isovaleroyl structures and to analyze isomeric mixtures. This technique

The jaw fat of the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) contains unusual wax esters which can be separated into short chain (<C24) and long chain (>C24) fractions by thin layer chromatography. The short chain wax esters (28 wt. %) have been characterized as a 72∶24∶4 mixture
of isovaleroyl, isobutoryl, and 2-methylbutyrol, esters of C14–C18 n- and iso-alcohols. The intact <C24 esters have been resolved into individual molecular species by gas liquid chromatography on open-tubular polyester columns.
The long chain wax esters (12 wt. %) contain C10–C22 n- and iso-acids esterified to the same C14–C18 n- and iso-alcohols. Gas liquid chromatography of the intact, hydrogenated >C24 esters on a short JXR column has characterized them according to carbon number and the number of methyl branches they contain. 相似文献

Improvements in Young's modulus and strength (tenacity) of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers were obtained by drawing unoriented nanocomposite filaments containing low concentrations (<3 wt%) of various organically modified montmorillonites (MMTs) in a second step at temperatures above the glass transition. Prior to melt spinning, solid‐state polymerization was used to rebuild lost molecular weight, due to MMT‐induced degradation, to a level suitable for producing high strength fibers. Greater improvements in mechanical properties occurred when the MMT stacks were intercalated with PET. A nominal 1 wt% loading of dimethyl‐dehydrogenated tallow quaternary ammonium surface modified MMT in drawn PET fiber showed a 28% and 63% increase in Young's modulus and strength, respectively. Relative to an unfilled PET fiber, these results surpassed the upper bound of the rule of mixtures estimate and suggested that both the type of surface modification and concentration of MMT affect the degree of PET orientation and crystallinity. Furthermore, drawability above Tg and elongation at break increased upon the addition of organically modified MMT to unoriented PET fibers, which was a key distinction of this work from others examining similar systems. An intermittent corn drying process of drying-tempering-drying in a laboratory scale thin layer dryer was optimized. A time lag function was developed to describe the influence of the tempering period on the drying rate in the post-tempering drying period. Three dryer control strategies (1) a drying-rate-first strategy, (2) an energy-efficiency-first strategy, and (3) an equal- importance (rate/efficiency) strategy were investigated. Conducting nanofibers of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)/polyvinyl alcohol (PEDOT:PSS/PVA) were fabricated at room temperature and via electrospinning with diameters ranging from 100 to 300 nm. The nanofibers were irradiated with Gamma and X-rays for varying lengths of time and the change in conductivity was evaluated. Raman and Electron Spin Resonance spectroscopy of X-ray irradiated nanofibers were obtained to determine the mechanism of conductivity degradation. A decrease in molecular ordering as well as chain scission via chain cross-linking and free radical formation are the two most likely mechanisms for change in conductivity. Neuromuscular impairment by ethanol likely involves complex effects on balance, gait, muscle strength, and other features of motor coordination. The present experiments showed that relative sensitivity to ethanol-induced motor impairment in serotonin 1B (5-HT1B) null mutant and control mice was task dependent. We found that ethanol-treated null mutant mice made fewer missteps on a balance beam than did ethanol-treated wild-type mice, and confirmed a previous finding of their lesser ethanol sensitivity in the grid test. The genotypes did not differ in ethanol sensitivity as measured by the screen test, static dowel, fixed-speed rotarod, accelerating rotarod, grip strength, or loss of righting reflex tests. These experiments suggest that within a behavioral domain, alternative tests of function are not equivalent, so multiple assessment tools should be used to avoid misinterpretation of gene function. To determine the etiology of genital ulcers and to assess the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in ulcer patients in 10 US cities, ulcer and serum specimens were collected from approximately 50 ulcer patients at a sexually transmitted disease clinic in each city. Ulcer specimens were tested using a multiplex polymerase chain reaction assay to detect Haemophilus ducreyi, Treponema pallidum, and herpes simplex virus (HSV); sera were tested for antibody to HIV. H. ducreyi was detected in ulcer specimens from patients in Memphis (20% of specimens) and Chicago (12%). T. pallidum was detected in ulcer specimens from every city except Los Angeles (median, 9% of specimens; range, 0%-46%). HSV was detected in >/=50% of specimens from all cities except Memphis (42%). HIV seroprevalence in ulcer patients was 6% (range by city, 0%-18%). These data suggest that chancroid is prevalent in some US cities and that persons with genital ulcers should be a focus of HIV prevention activities. 相似文献
