Microstructure and press formability of a cross-rolled magnesium alloy sheet

Cross-rolling, in which the roll axis is tilted by 7.5° towards the TD-direction, was carried out on a commercial magnesium alloy. The (0002) texture intensity of the cross-rolled specimen was lower than that of the unidirectionally rolled specimen, and the (0002) texture of the cross-rolled specimen was inclined about 10° towards the TD-direction. Also, the grain size of the cross-rolled specimen was smaller than that of the unidirectionally rolled specimen. As a result of the Erichsen tests at 433-493 K, the press formability of the cross-rolled specimen was higher than that of the unidirectionally rolled specimen. The high formability of the cross-rolled specimen is attributed to both the modification of (0002) texture and the enhancement of grain refinement by the cross-rolling.     

Cloning and characterization of cDNAs encoding S-RNases from almond (Prunus dulcis): primary structural features and sequence diversity of the S-RNases in Rosaceae

The ability of histamine H3 receptor ligands to interact with 5-HT3 receptors in NG108-15 cells was studied using the whole cell patch clamp recording technique. Imetit, a histamine H3 receptor agonist, generated inward currents and exhibited weak partial agonist activity at the 5-HT3 receptor (EC50 = 11.8 microM). Imetit-induced currents were slow to desensitize and at a high concentration reduced in size. The histamine H3 receptor antagonists iodophenpropit and thioperamide did not generate inward currents but were able to inhibit 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) responses with an IC50 of 1.57+/-0.3 microM and 13.7+/-3.5 microM, respectively. Thioperamide is probably a non-competitive antagonist which may have more than one binding site on the receptor.     

Preventive effects of polysaccharides extracted from human tubercle bacilli (specific substance of Maruyama) on colonic carcinogenesis in rats

Polysaccharides extracted from human tubercle bacilli (specific substance of Maruyama [SSM]) have been clinically applied with satisfactory results. Thymidylate synthetase (TS) and thymidine kinase (TK) are key enzymes in de novo and salvage pathways for pyrimidine nucleotide synthesis. Well- and moderately well differentiated adenocarcinomas induced with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) are widely distributed throughout the colorectal tract with high TK activity, and the poorly differentiated type is mainly restricted in the proximal colon and the cecum with high TS activity in rats. Subcutaneously injecting the rats with SSM reduced TS activity in colonic nontumorous regions, but in the tumorous regions it reduced TK activity compared with that of the DMH-treated rats without SSM treatment. SSM is suggested to reduce the colorectal carcinogenesis induced with DMH by inhibiting DNA synthesis in a de novo pathway, and to suppress the development of the tumors by decreasing DNA synthesis in the salvage pathway in rats.     

Uterine estrogen receptor assayed by the controlled pore glass (CPG) method in adult rat after steroid administration

The interaction of estrogen and androgen was studied at the estrogen receptor level of adult rat uterus by the in vivo experiment. Both the free and total estrogen receptor in the cytosol and nucleus were assayed by the controlled pore glass beads method [2]. Testosterone was given by daily injection for 5 days to the rats treated with estradiol dipropionate (long-acting estradiol) 3 or 5 days before. In the estradiol dipropionate-treated rats the plasma estradiol concentration remained at an extremely high level for 7 days and then decreased to 5-fold of that of proestrus control by the 14th day. There was no significant change in the uterine estrogen receptor of the adult rat with a high estradiol concentration induced by testosterone.     

An enzyme catalyzing O-prenylation of the glucose moiety of fusicoccin A, a diterpene glucoside produced by the fungus Phomopsis amygdali

Isoprenoids form the largest family of compounds found in nature. Isoprenoids are often attached to other moieties such as aromatic compounds, indoles/tryptophan, and flavonoids. These reactions are catalyzed by three phylogenetically distinct prenyltransferases: soluble aromatic prenyltransferases identified mainly in actinobacteria, soluble indole prenyltransferases mostly in fungi, and membrane‐bound prenyltransferases in various organisms. Fusicoccin A (FC A) is a diterpene glycoside produced by the plant‐pathogenic fungus Phomopsis amygdali and has a unique O‐prenylated glucose moiety. In this study, we identified for the first time, from a genome database of P. amygdali, a gene (papt) encoding a prenyltransferase that reversibly transfers dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) to the 6′‐hydroxy group of the glucose moiety of FC A to yield an O‐prenylated sugar. An in vitro assay with a recombinant enzyme was also developed. Detailed analyses with recombinant PAPT showed that the enzyme is likely to be a monomer and requires no divalent cations. The optimum pH and temperature were 8.0 and 50 °C, respectively. K_m values were calculated as 0.49±0.037 μM for FC P (a plausible intermediate of FC A biosynthesis) and 8.3±0.63 μM for DMAPP, with a k_cat of 55.3±3.3×10^?3 s. The enzyme did not act on representative substrates of the above‐mentioned three types of prenyltransferase, but showed a weak transfer activity of geranyl diphosphate to FC P.     

Study of meniscus behavior and surface properties during casting in a high-frequency magnetic field

Surface quality of continuously cast metals can be improved by imposing a continuous high-frequency magnetic field from the outside of a mold. Newly proposed concepts of “soft contacting solidification” and “slow cooling solidification,” which is tightly related to the mechanism of improving surface quality, were confirmed in model experiments by using molten gallium and tin. The meniscus motion of the molten gallium accompanied by a mold oscillation and magnetic pressure was measured by a laser level sensor. The shape variation of a meniscus and the process of ripple formation in an oscillation cycle were directly visualized by an optical fiberscope camera. Moreover, molten tin was continuously cast and the relationship between the surface quality and the meniscus motion was studied. A mechanical model for predicting the space between the oscillation marks is proposed. The casting process using intermittent highfrequency magnetic field was developed. New functions of this field were investigated regarding the control of initial solidification. It was found that the surface quality of the continuously cast metal can be improved by the intermittent high-frequency magnetic field as well as the continuous high-frequency magnetic field. Effects of danazol on DNA synthesis in rat prostate

We recorded frontal, central and parietal somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) to median nerve stimulation in 20 patients with Huntington's disease (HD) and in a group of normal controls. Two stimulus repetition rates, 1 Hz and 5 Hz, were employed. In HD patients the early cortical potentials (latency range 20-30 ms) at all 3 recording locations were replaced by a widespread, broadly configured N20-25 deflection, while later potentials at 40-80 ms did not significantly differ from those of normals. In contrast to the early P22, P27 and N30 potentials in normals, the N20-25 potential in the patients was not significantly modified by changing the stimulus repetition rate. At 40-80 ms the stimulus rate effects were similar in the patients and normals. The results show that early pre- and postcentral SEPs are both pathological in HD, while later frontal and parietal components can be totally preserved. The early N20-25 in HD is possibly a subcortical potential, seen due to unmasking in the absence of early cortical deflections.     

Generation of efficient LALR parsers for regular right part grammars

Summary A method for building small fast LALR parsers for regular right part grammars is given. No grammar transformation is required. No extra state of the LALR parser for the recognition of strings generated by a right part is required. At some reduce states the parser may refer to lookback states (states in which the parser may be restarted after the reduction). An optimizing algorithm to reduce these references is also given.     

Novel regulation of delta-aminolevulinate synthase in the rat harderian gland

Leukocyte integrins and intercellular adhesion molecules play pivotal roles in leukocyte adhesion to target cells and extracellular matrices. Recently, novel intercellular adhesion molecules have been identified, and much information has been obtained on the structures and binding sites of leukocyte integrins and of intercellular adhesion molecules. Furthermore, much progress has been made in the study of integrin activation and the role of leukocyte adhesion molecules in disease.
