The mechanisms of suppression and enhancement in comprehension.

The goal of comprehension is to build coherent mental representations or structures. These structures represent clauses, sentences, paragraphs, passages, and other meaningful units. Thus, comprehending a clause requires building a mental structure to represent what that clause is about; comprehending a sentence requires building a mental structure to represent what that sentence is about; comprehending a passage requires building a mental structure to represent what that passage is about. In Gernsbacher (1990), I described a simple framework for understanding how comprehenders build mental structures during comprehension. I call this framework, the Structure Building Framework. Order acceptance with weighted tardiness

Over the past decade the strategic importance of order acceptance has been widely recognized in practice as well as academic research. This paper examines order acceptance decisions when capacity is limited, customers receive a discount for late delivery, but early delivery is neither penalized nor rewarded. We model a manufacturing facility that considers a pool of orders, and chooses for processing the subset that results in the highest profit. We present several solution methods, beginning with a straightforward application of an approach which separates sequencing and job acceptance. We then develop an optimal branch-and-bound procedure that uses a linear (integer) relaxation for bounding and performs the sequencing and job acceptance decisions jointly. We develop a variety of fast and high-quality heuristics based on this approach. For small problems, beam search runs almost 20 times faster than the benchmark, with a high degree of accuracy, and a branch-and-bound heuristic using Vogel's method for bounding is over 100 times faster with very high accuracy. For larger problems, a myopic heuristic based on the relaxation runs 2000 times faster than the beam-search benchmark, with comparable accuracy.     

A model for electroluminescence in SrS:Ce ACTFEL display devices

An analytical model for electroluminescence in SrS:Ce AC thin-film electroluminescent display devices is presented. The model incorporates an exact calculation of the electric field and the effect of activator ionization and bulk traps. Activator ionization is needed to explain several features of luminescence behavior in SrS:Ce devices. These features include the second luminescence peak at the trailing edge of the voltage pulse and the time lag between the luminescence and the applied voltage when the applied voltage consists of bipolar trapezoidal pulses and rectangular pulses of low voltage amplitudes. As a mechanism for the ionization of activators, field-assisted tunneling is shown to be more likely than impact ionization by hot electrons. Physical processes are described in terms of rate equations, and field, current, and luminescence waveforms are calculated for one set of device parameters. Gain characteristics of 1.55-μm high-speed multiple-quantum-welllasers

We describe the important characteristics of high-speed p-doped compressively strained MQW lasers obtained from comprehensive below-threshold DC measurements. Results of gain and differential gain versus wavelength and carrier density are verified by above-threshold resonance measurements. Measurement-derived design curves of gain, differential gain, and linewidth enhancement factor allow device optimization for high speed and low chirp     

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in primates infected with a simian immunodeficiency virus

Focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSG) with endothelial tubuloreticular inclusions (TRIs) is the typical lesion of human HIV-associated glomerulopathy. Autopsy studies showed the presence of FSG in 3 of 15 macaques dying 15-120 weeks after experimental infection with a simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVMne). Ultrastructural studies generally revealed numerous endothelial TRIs (also present in normals), mesangial expansion, and evidence of mesangial cell injury. One additional animal had a small-vessel polyarteritis with a proliferative and focally crescentic glomerulonephritis; seven animals had mild, multifocal interstitial nephritis. All animals had documented viremia after infection; 14 of 15 developed antibodies to SIV postinoculation. Additional postmortem findings included severe enterocolitis, encephalitis, and opportunistic infections. In contrast, autopsy studies of macaques infected with a type D simian retrovirus (SAIDS-D/Washington, SRV-2) for similar periods of time (n = 40) showed no evidence of FSG. One SRV-infected animal had a mild proliferative glomerulonephritis. These studies indicate SIV-infected primates may provide a relevant model for study of human HIV-associated nephropathy. They also indicate the variable pathology that can be seen in primate infections of distinct retrovirus types, each of which produces a simian immunodeficiency state that resembles human AIDS.     

Electron energy distribution at the insulator-semiconductorinterface in AC thin film electroluminescent display devices

Electron emission from insulator-semiconductor interface in ZnS:Mn ac thin film electroluminescent (ACTFEL) display devices was investigated by studying the current and field waveforms. A new technique for measuring the interface electron energy distribution at insulator-semiconductor interfaces was developed. The technique involves the measurement of tunnel current transients and can be used to study the interface electron energy distribution between any insulator-semiconductor pair with which an ac thin film test structure can be fabricated. It was applied to a ZnS:Mn display device at two temperatures of 10 K and 300 K and to a metal interface device structure     

On the scaling of impact loaded composite beams

Approaches to the scaling of impact experiments on laminated composite beams are presented and problems associated with incomplete similitude are discussed. In the case of beams scaled on a sublaminate basis, a correction factor is presented to scale the dynamic response of beams subjected to drop-weight impacts. The scaling procedure is evaluated in a series of scaled experiments on graphite-epoxy composite beams. It is shown that the correction factor provides a valid scaling procedure for the dynamic response but a significant scale effect on damage development and strength is observed.     

The nitric oxide-cGMP pathway may mediate communication between sensory afferents and projection neurons in the antennal lobe of Manduca sexta

The nitric oxide (NO)-cGMP signaling system is thought to play important roles in the function of the olfactory system in both vertebrates and invertebrates. One way of studying the role of NO in the nervous system is to study the distribution and properties of NO synthase (NOS), as well as the soluble guanylyl cyclases (sGCs), which are the best characterized targets of NO. We study NOS and sGC in the relatively simple and well characterized insect olfactory system of the hawkmoth, Manduca sexta. We have cloned Manduca sexta nitric oxide synthase (MsNOS) and two sGCs (MsGCalpha1 and MsGCbeta1), characterized their basic biochemical properties, and studied their expression in the olfactory system. The sequences of the Manduca genes are highly similar to their mammalian homologs and show similar biochemical properties when expressed in COS-7 cells. In particular, we find that MsGC functions as an obligate heterodimer that is stimulated significantly by NO. We also find that MsNOS has a Ca2+-sensitive NO-producing activity similar to that of mammalian neuronal NOS. Northern and in situ hybridization analyses show that MsNOS and the MsGCs are expressed in a complementary pattern, with MsNOS expressed at high levels in the antennae and the MsGCs expressed at high levels in a subset of antennal lobe neurons. The expression patterns of these genes suggest that the NO-sGC signaling system may play a role in mediating communication between olfactory receptor neurons and projection neurons in the glomeruli of the antennal lobe.
