The incursion of microbial growth on polymeric products can deteriorate their performance and lead to the development of undesirable staining and odors. A growing trend in the industry has aimed to reduce microbial populations on high-touch surfaces via the use of antimicrobials to protect material aesthetics and durability or to prevent the spread of pathogenic microorganisms. In this study, a variety of plastic substrates (30 unique polymer compounds), including poly(acrylonitrile-co-butadiene-co-styrene), poly(butylene terephthalate), poly(etherimide), various thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), poly(carbonates), and poly(amides), were screened for susceptibility to microbial attack using American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) G21 (fungi susceptibility), Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) Z2801, and modified ASTM E1428-15a (bacterial susceptibility) test standards. TPEs were determined to be most susceptible to microbial attack under the appropriate environmental conditions. Subsequent studies assessed the use of an antimicrobial additive, zinc pyrithione (ZPT), for potential efficacy in a variety of TPE blends for diverse target market applications. ZPT proved to be very effective in protecting TPEs, reducing Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli populations by 99.9% or more in JIS Z2801 testing and inhibiting fungal growth (rating = 0) according to the ASTM G21 standard.  相似文献

Under normal physiological conditions the brain primarily utilizes glucose for ATP generation. However, in situations where glucose is sparse, e.g., during prolonged fasting, ketone bodies become an important energy source for the brain. The brain’s utilization of ketones seems to depend mainly on the concentration in the blood, thus many dietary approaches such as ketogenic diets, ingestion of ketogenic medium-chain fatty acids or exogenous ketones, facilitate significant changes in the brain’s metabolism. Therefore, these approaches may ameliorate the energy crisis in neurodegenerative diseases, which are characterized by a deterioration of the brain’s glucose metabolism, providing a therapeutic advantage in these diseases. Most clinical studies examining the neuroprotective role of ketone bodies have been conducted in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, where brain imaging studies support the notion of enhancing brain energy metabolism with ketones. Likewise, a few studies show modest functional improvements in patients with Parkinson’s disease and cognitive benefits in patients with—or at risk of—Alzheimer’s disease after ketogenic interventions. Here, we summarize current knowledge on how ketogenic interventions support brain metabolism and discuss the therapeutic role of ketones in neurodegenerative disease, emphasizing clinical data.  相似文献

This paper discusses principles for allocating multiple bearer services onto different subsystems in multiaccess wireless systems. Based on the included subsystem's multiservice capacities, under certain constraints near-optimum subsystem service allocations that maximize combined multiservice capacity are derived through simple optimization procedures. These favorable service allocations are either extreme points where services, as far as possible, are allocated to the subsystems best at supporting them, or they are characterized by the relative efficiency of supporting services being equal in all subsystems. The consequences of this include that services should typically be mixed in subsystems with convex capacity regions and isolated in subsystems with concave capacity regions. Simple user assignment algorithms based on this are also discussed. Additionally, illustrating the main findings of the analysis, some system examples are given, including a case study with combined global system for mobile communications (GSM) and wideband code-division multiple-access (WCDMA) systems. The gain of using the proposed service allocation principles compared to a reference case of maintaining equal service mixes in all subsystems depends on the shape of the subsystem capacity regions; the more different the capacity regions, the larger the gain. In the GSM and WCDMA case study, capacity gains of up to 100% in terms of supported data users for a fixed voice traffic load are achieved.  相似文献

Deterministic propagation prediction methods proposed for indoor radio are useful for estimating the average propagation loss in real environments, which usually have complicated geometries. On the other hand, these methods generally fail to accommodate human body shadowing, which is a significant propagation effect in indoor picocells. Several empirical models to describe body shadowing have been reported. However, to our knowledge, no appropriate model that can be used in combination with deterministic propagation prediction methods has been provided in the literature. In this paper, a new practical model is introduced, which provides a way to estimate body-shadowing effects deterministically with the existing ray-determination methods. The detailed procedure to combine our body-shadowing model with the ray-determination methods is described. Several examples are shown applying the procedure to a simple office layout  相似文献

The fracture assessment of structures subjected to secondary loading systems was studied by FEM-analysis of a few illustrative two-dimensional examples. The first example is an edge-cracked plate with a thermal gradient. The FEM-calculations revealed that a purely elastic analysis yielded J-values that are in most cases considerably more conservative than the ones calculated from an elastic-plastic analysis. The results were further compared with different engineering type non-linear estimates. As a second example a crack emanating from a semi-circular notch in a rectangular plate was chosen. The plate was subjected to uniaxial tension along its boundaries. It turned out that for the cases considered the J-values were fairly close to those elastically predicted.  相似文献

Quantitative cellular in vitro nanoparticle uptake measurements are possible with a large number of different techniques, however, all have their respective restrictions. Here, we demonstrate the application of synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence imaging (XFI) on prostate tumor cells, which have internalized differently functionalized gold nanoparticles. Total nanoparticle uptake on the order of a few hundred picograms could be conveniently observed with microsamples consisting of only a few hundreds of cells. A comparison with mass spectroscopy quantification is provided, experimental results are both supported and sensitivity limits of this XFI approach extrapolated by Monte-Carlo simulations, yielding a minimum detectable nanoparticle mass of just 5 pg. This study demonstrates the high sensitivity level of XFI, allowing non-destructive uptake measurements with very small microsamples within just seconds of irradiation time.  相似文献

A fine-grained zirconia, which has been costabilized with yttria and magnesia, has been prepared. The purpose of this investigation was to study the origin of the differences in paper‐to‐paper friction of linerboards based on old corrugated containers (OCC). The sheets were subjected to two extraction stages and analyzed with respect to, surface roughness, and their content of low‐molecular‐mass lipophilic compounds (LLC). Friction was measured using a friction tester based on the horizontal plane principle. The surface roughness was measured using a Perthometer profiler and the low molecular mass lipophilic constituent of the paper sheets was determined by gas chromatography‐mass spectroscopy. The sheets were imaged using environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), and the relative compositions of inorganic ions on the paper surfaces were determined by energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that a high amount of LLC in the sheets lead to low friction, due to lubrication. It was also observed that large CaCO3 particles on the surface had a friction‐increasing effect, and that there was no relationship between the surface roughness and the friction. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
