The small-bore distribution systems normally employed in methyl bromide fumigations of bagged grain have certain disadvantages, especially where large stacks are concerned, and an alternative method, based on lay-flat polythene tubing, is described.
The results of a comparative trial, in which the two methods were applied under almost identical conditions, show that improved distribution of fumigant within the stack can be achieved with the ‘lay-flat system’. 相似文献

Background: Lynchburg Nephrology Dialysis Incorporated started its nightly home hemodialysis (NHHD) program in September 1997. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate episodes of exit‐site infections, catheter sepsis, and safety and longevity of accesses for patients doing NHHD. Method: If internal jugular (IJ) catheter was chosen, the patient was started on 2 mg coumadin per day when catheter was placed. If catheter malfunctioned, it was blocked with a thrombolytic agent and coumadin was adjusted to meet a goal international normalized ratio (INR) of 1.5 to 2.25. If the problem persisted, the catheter was exchanged. For catheters, a threaded lock cannula (BD InterLink device, BD) was used to prevent air emboli and infections and a locking device was used to prevent disconnects. If arteriovenous (AV) fistula was used, four buttonholes were established using 16‐gauge needles. If AV graft was used, patients were taught the rope ladder cannulation technique using 16‐gauge needles. Results: As of September 1, 2003, 45 patients have completed training and have performed 27,063 treatments at home. Total catheter time at home was 930 months. Total AV fistula and AV graft times at home were 190 and 20 months, respectively. Upon completion of training, 34 patients were using tunneled IJ catheters, 10 were using AV fistulas, and 1 was using an AV graft. The IJ catheter exit‐site and sepsis infection rates were 0.35 and 0.52 episodes per 1000 patient‐days, respectively. Mean catheter life was 8.5 months with the longest being 66.7 months and the shortest being 0.2 months. The AV fistula and graft exit‐site and sepsis infection rates were 0.16 and 0 episodes per 1000 patient‐days, respectively. Catheter complications included one episode of disconnect due to patient's failure to use the locking device, one episode of central stenosis, and one episode of intracranial hemorrhage, due to prolonged INR, with resolution of symptoms. Conclusion: Data support the fact that tunneled IJ catheters, AV fistulas, and AV grafts are effective and safe permanent accesses for patients on NHHD. 相似文献

Up to 11% of pregnancies extend to post-term with adverse obstetric events linked to pregnancies over 42 weeks. Oxidative stress and senescence (cells stop growing and dividing by irreversibly arresting their cell cycle and gradually ageing) can result in diminished cell function. There are no detailed studies of placental cell senescence markers across a range of gestational ages, although increased levels have been linked to pre-eclampsia before full term. This study aimed to determine placental senescence and oxidative markers across a range of gestational ages in women with uncomplicated pregnancies and those with a diagnosis of pre-eclampsia. Placentae were obtained from 37 women with uncomplicated pregnancies of 37–42 weeks and from 13 cases of pre-eclampsia of 31+2–41+2 weeks. The expression of markers of senescence, oxidative stress, and antioxidant defence (tumour suppressor protein p16INK4a, kinase inhibitor p21, interleukin-6 (IL-6), NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4), glutathione peroxidases 1, 3, and 4 (GPx1, GPx3, and GPx4), placental growth factor (PlGF), and soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1)) genes was measured (quantitative real-time PCR). Protein abundance of p16INK4a, IL-6, NOX4, 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxy-guanosine (8-OHdG), and PlGF was assessed by immunocytochemistry. Placental NOX4 protein was higher in post-term than term deliveries and further increased by pre-eclampsia (p < 0.05 for all). P21 expression was higher in post-term placentae (p = 0.012) and in pre-eclampsia (p = 0.04), compared to term. Placental P16INK4a protein expression was increased post-term, compared to term (p = 0.01). In normotensive women, gestational age at delivery was negatively associated with GPx4 and PlGF (mRNA and protein) (p < 0.05 for all), whereas a positive correlation was seen with placental P21, NOX4, and P16INK4a (p < 0.05 for all) expression. Markers of placental oxidative stress and senescence appear to increase as gestational age increases, with antioxidant defences diminishing concomitantly. These observations increase our understanding of placental health and may contribute to assessment of the optimal gestational age for delivery. 相似文献

We have previously demonstrated that stress proteins (SPs) are synthesized in tissues in which malformations are later observed following treatment with the developmental toxicant, retinoic acid (RA), on day 11 of gestation (GD 11). These proteins were not synthesized in tissues which did not present with malformations near partuition. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine if this correlation between early SP synthesis and later malformation was present at other times during gestation. CD-1 strain mice were dosed orally with corn oil or 100 mg/kg body weight RA on GD 10 or 13. Some of the mice in each group were given an intraperitoneal injection of 3H-leucine to label embryonic protein synthesis one hour after dosing with RA. These animals were sacrificed 1.5 hour later, and embryonic protein synthesis was determined by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis followed by autoradiography. Other animals in each group were sacrificed on day 17 of gestation, and fetuses were examined for the presence of malformations. Following treatment with RA on day 10 of gestation, malformations were observed in the forelimbs, the hindlimbs and the tail; heart defects were not observed. SPs of 20-25,000 and 90,000 relative molecular mass (Mr) were synthesized in the forelimb bud and tail; in addition, a second low molecular weight (20-25,000) and a 84,000 Mr SPs were synthesized in forelimb buds. No SPs were synthesized in the hindlimb bud or the heart. Following RA treatment on GD 13, cleft palate was observed in 58% of fetuses; no other malformations were found. Proteins of 34,000, 84,000 and 90,000 Mr were synthesized in craniofacial tissue; SPs were not observed in forelimb bud, hindlimb bud, heart or tail tissues at this time. Therefore, it appears that there may be a correlation between tissue-specific SP synthesis early in organogenesis and the presence of a malformation later in gestation. 相似文献

Summary In viscoelastic flow of an incompressible fluid down a straight trough of arbitrary cross-section, the normal stress effect produces a distortion of the free surface. In slow flow, the shape is given in the lowest order of approximation in terms of the axial velocity for Newtonian flow. Equations governing the second-order perturbation are derived.

A novel culture system is reported in which pig preantral follicles (< 300 microm in diameter) with an intact thecal cell layer were isolated and cultured in a serum-free medium for up to 30 days. The medium supported follicle culture after isolation, while maintaining both somatic cell and oocyte viability. Follicles were cultured in groups (n = 3 per group) on collagen-coated wells for 16 days, during which they retained a three-dimensional structure, maintained oocyte viability and increased in diameter and number of somatic cells. Follicle culture for 30 days resulted in a further increase in number of cells, oocyte viability was maintained, and a significant increase in follicle diameter was observed (P < 0.001), with 29% of follicles forming an antrum. Follicles synthesized measurable quantities of progesterone (168 pg per 100 microl per 48 h; no significant increase with time) and increasing quantities of oestradiol (136 pg per 100 microl per 48 h; P < 0.001 with time). Further supplementation of the medium with 100 micromol testosterone l(-1) at day 28 resulted in a significant increase in oestradiol secretion by both antral (P < 0.01) and preantral follicles (P < 0.05). Culture over 30 days in medium with 10(-10) mol angiotensin II l(-1) and further supplementation at day 28 with 100 micromol testosterone l-1 also increased oestradiol synthesis (P < 0.001). These results show that viable preantral follicles may be cultured for extended periods, and indicate that the possible role of angiotensin II in folliculogenesis and steroidogenesis in early development of pig follicles requires further investigation. 相似文献
