Die Mobilit?t in den letzten Jahren, speziell die Freizeitmobilit?t, hat hingegen zugenommen. Die Bereitstellung ortsbezogener Dienste – ,,Location-based Services“ – unterstützt und f?rdert dieses Verhalten.     

Linear demosaicing inspired by the human visual system.

There is an analogy between single-chip color cameras and the human visual system in that these two systems acquire only one limited wavelength sensitivity band per spatial location. We have exploited this analogy, defining a model that characterizes a one-color per spatial position image as a coding into luminance and chrominance of the corresponding three colors per spatial position image. Luminance is defined with full spatial resolution while chrominance contains subsampled opponent colors. Moreover, luminance and chrominance follow a particular arrangement in the Fourier domain, allowing for demosaicing by spatial frequency filtering. This model shows that visual artifacts after demosaicing are due to aliasing between luminance and chrominance and could be solved using a preprocessing filter. This approach also gives new insights for the representation of single-color per spatial location images and enables formal and controllable procedures to design demosaicing algorithms that perform well compared to concurrent approaches, as demonstrated by experiments.     

The impact of roasting on the ochratoxin A content of coffee

Roasting coffee led to a drop in the ochratoxin A (OTA) concentration, as measured by the reference method, especially for dark type roasts. The way the beverage was prepared also affected the OTA content, which could paradoxically be higher than that of the initial roasted coffee. Assays on the thermal stability of pure OTA showed that it ought to be found in larger quantities in roasted coffee. This suggested that OTA was masked by reactions with the substrate during roasting. The absence of OTA in green coffee is therefore the best guarantee of safety.     

Effect of nicotine, lobeline, and mecamylamine on sensory gating in the rat

In normal subjects, if an acoustic startle stimulus is immediately preceded by a small brief change in background noise intensity, the magnitude of the subsequent startle response is decreased. This prepulse inhibition (PPI) of an acoustic startle response has been shown to be associated with sensorimotor gating. PPI is disrupted in schizophrenic patients and has been linked to attentional disorders characteristic of this disease. We tested the effects of (-)-nicotine, (0.19, 0.62, and 1.9 mumol/kg IP) (equivalent to 0.03, 0.1, and 0.3 mg/kg base) and the nicotinic cholinergic receptor (nAChR) channel blocker, mecamylamine (5.0 and 50 mumol/kg IP) (equivalent to 1.0 and 10.0 mg/kg) on PPI of the acoustic startle response in the rat. Nicotine increased the PPI at the lowest prepulse signal levels but not at the stronger levels. Mecamylamine was without effect at 5.0 mumol/kg, but the 50 mumol/kg dose decreased the inhibition at both weak and strong prepulse (PP) levels. Mecamylamine (5.0 mumol/kg) pretreatment did not block the (-)-nicotine-induced increase in PPI. Lobeline (0.19, 0.62, 1.9, and 6.2 mumol/kg IP) (equivalent to 0.071, 0.23, 0.71, and 2.3 mg/kg) was without effect. These results are consistent with a mecamylamine-insensitive effect of nicotine to improve gating in normal rats. The nAChR subtype involved in producing nicotine's increase of PPI needs further investigation.     

Catalysis of linoleate oxidation by soluble chicken muscle proteins

A soluble fraction of a chickenMusculus gastrocnemius muscle was used to characterize the catalyst of linoleate oxidation. Separation of the chicken muscle extract into low (free metal) and high (protein) molecular weight fractions revealed that the molecular weight of the major catalyst of linoleate oxidation in chicken muscle extract was greater than 700 daltons. Catalysis of linoleate oxidation by the protein fraction exhibited a pH optimum of 5.9. Subjecting the protein fraction to heat treatments at increasing temperatures (30–90 C) decreased the catalysis of linoleate oxidation. Addition of two mM EDTA had no effect on the catalysis of linoleate oxidation. Cyanide (2 mM), glutathione (1 mM) and cysteine (1 mM) decreased the oxidation of linoleate by the protein fraction 21.0%, 22.9% and 29.0% respectively. Characterization of the oxidative catalyst in chicken muscle extract indicated that free metals and hemoproteins contribute to overall catalysis of linoleate oxidation but are not the sole catalysts. Heat inactivation of the oxidative catalyst and the observed pH optimum suggests that the unidentified catalyst is proteinacious and may be an enzyme.     

Political orientation and modern versus aversive racism: Tests of Dovidio and Gaertner's (1998) integrated model.

According to J. F. Dovidio and S. L. Gaertner's (1998) integrated model of racism, politically liberal European Americans tend to express racism differently than conservative European Americans, with liberals demonstrating aversive racism and conservatives, symbolic or modern racism. In support of the model, in Experiment 1 liberals showed bias in favor of a twice-prosecuted African American relative to a European American in their judgment of double jeopardy, whereas conservatives did the reverse. Experiment 2 replicated these effects while eliminating a confound in the design of Experiment 1. Experiment 3 found evidence for the intrapsychic conflict hypothesized to underlie aversive racism. Specifically, only liberals displayed greater physiological arousal to the touch of an African American versus a European American experimenter. Telephone booster sessions for optimizing smoking cessation for patients in rehabilitation centers.

Smokers with smoking-related diseases who are hospitalized in rehabilitation centers should be offered smoking cessation. This is the first study evaluating whether telephone booster sessions after intensive inpatient treatment are an effective strategy. The present study was conducted in 13 rehabilitation centers for somatic disorders as a prospective multicenter study with a randomized treatment-control group design. We compared abstinence rates after hospital discharge from treatment that included a group smoking cessation program with (treatment group) and without telephone booster sessions (control group). Data from 290 smokers were analyzed. After 6 and 12 months the treatment group achieved abstinence rates twice as high as those of the control group. Men profited more from telephone booster sessions than did women. Results indicated that telephone booster sessions were highly effective (even) after an inherently intensive group program during a hospital stay. Further research should focus on the special needs of women receiving telephone counseling.
