Ruptured congenital aneurysms of the noncoronary aortic sinus shunting into both the right atrium and right ventricle are extremely rare. We present here such an anomaly in a 40-year-old man, focusing on the diagnostic reliability of echocardiography and the unusual angiographic features of the aortic sinus aneurysm in this patient.  相似文献

This report presents the fabrication of bifunctional magnetic and fluorescent microneedles (µNDs) made of a ternary mixture of magnetic nanoparticles (NPs), quantum dots (QDs), and polyelectrolyte. The assembly relies on the electrostatic complexation of negatively charged NPs with positively charged polymer strands and is controlled by the charge ratio between the nanoparticle building blocks and the polymer mortar. The resulting 1D objects can be actuated using an external magnetic field and can be imaged using fluorescence microscopy, thanks to the fluorescent and superparamagnetic properties inherited from their NP constituents. Using a combination of core and surface characterizations and a state‐of‐the‐art image analysis algorithm, the dependence of the brightness and length on the ternary composition is thoroughly investigated. In particular, statistics on hundreds of µNDs with a range of compositions show that the µNDs have a log‐lormal length distribution and that their mean length can be robustly tuned in the 5–50 µm range to match the relevant length scales of various applications in micromixing, bioassays or biomechanics.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to study the effect(s) of Borrelia burgdorferi and its metabolites (toxicants?) on canine spermatozoa, using B burgdorferi type strain B-31 and ejaculates from 5 sexually mature dogs. In Experiment 1 the spirochetes were cocultured with semen and incubated under various conditions, and in Experiment 2 the spirochetes were sonicated to release the metabolites/toxicants. The sonicate was then cultured with the semen. The parameters investigated were kinematics and percentage of sperm motility, morphology, and sperm response to the hypoosmotic swelling test and acrosome reaction. There were no visible physical interaction between either dead or motile spirochetes and viable or dead spermatozoa. Neither the spirochetes per se nor their metabolites/toxicants had any significant adverse effect on the functional and morphological characteristics of the canine spermatozoa. It is possible that the exposure times for incubation were not long enough for metabolites or toxicants in the sonicate to significantly affect sperm characteristics. Some investigators have reported that B burgdorferi contain biologically active LPS-like endotoxins. It is also likely that storage denatures B burgdorferi metabolites and other intracellular products in the sonicate and, thus, negates any effects the medium or the sonicate might have on the spermatozoa. The apparent lack of effect suggests that either peripheral metabolism or action on other organ(s) may be required for deleterious action of the spirochetes and/or their toxicants on spermatozoa. It was concluded that B burgdorferi and/or metabolites/toxicants do not have any significant deleterious effects on the functional and morphological characteristics of the postspermatogenic spermatozoa. Interaction of the spirochetes with in vivo conditions may be needed to adversely affect spermatozoa.  相似文献

Background:  Cardiovascular complications due to atherosclerosis (AS) are the major cause of mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Inflammation may play an important role in the development of AS. Several studies have demonstrated the association of acute-phase proteins and cytokines with AS in the general population and in HD patients. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is an anti-inflammatory cytokine. The aim of study was to compare serum levels inflammatory and anti-inflammatory indicators in HD patients according to the presence or absence of AS.
Methods:  Thirty-three HD patients were enrolled. AS was defined as the detection of plaques by Doppler ultrasonography. The patients were subgrouped according to the presence or absence of plaques. Serum levels of IL-1, IL-2, IL-6, IL-10, C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were measured. The factors for AS such as age, gender, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and HD duration were also evaluated.
Results:  We found that the patients with AS had significantly higher hs-CRP and lower IL-10. Blood pressure values were also increased in patients with AS. Additionally, there was an increased correlation between CRP and IL-10.
Conclusions:  AS(+) patients undergoing HD had low serum levels of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 and high serum levels of hs-CRP. These results may suggest that the limitation of anti-inflammatory response in atherosclerotic uremic patients is a triggering or contributing factor for AS.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to evaluate the biodegradable packaging materials which will be an alternative to traditional synthetic packaging materials. For this purpose, packaging films containing polycaprolactone (PCL), montmorillonite (MMT), and organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) were prepared by solution casting method, and the mechanical, physical, structural, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties of these films were examined. Cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) was used for the modification of montmorillonite. The structural properties of the prepared films were characterized by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared, X-ray powder diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The PCL/OMMT structure was found to be thermally more stable than the PCL/MMT structure. The addition of OMMT to PCL improved the thermal and mechanical properties of the films compared with the pure PCL and PCL/MMT films. In addition, adding MMT/OMMT to the PCL caused an increase in the hardness of the films. In the antimicrobial analysis, while no inhibition effect was observed in PCL/MMT films, PCL/OMMT films showed inhibition effect against Staphylococcus aureus. Antifungal tests performed with the prepared films showed that the film-wrapped bread did not deteriorate for 40 days. It is thought that PCL/MMT and PCL/OMMT films prepared in this study will provide an advantage in applications as packaging material.  相似文献

Basal levels of [Ca2+]i are elevated in diabetes mellitus. Such an abnormality is most likely due to both increased calcium influx into cells and decreased efflux of this ion out of the cells. The present study examined the cellular pathways that are responsible for hyperglycemia-induced acute rise in polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL), and explored whether such a rise is due to increased calcium entry into PMNL and/or to calcium release from their intracellular stores. There were dose dependent and time dependent rises in the [Ca2+]i of PMNL exposed to high concentrations of glucose. Similar effects were observed when the PMNL were exposed to high concentrations of choline chloride or mannitol. A substantial part of the rise in [Ca2+]i was inhibited when the media contained verapamil or nifedipine or when the PMNL were placed in calcium free media, and the rise in [Ca2+]i was completely abolished when the PMNL were placed in calcium free media containing ryanodine. GDP beta S or pertussis toxin almost completely prevented the glucose-induced rise in [Ca2+]i of PMNL. Rp-cAMP, H-89 or staurosporine produced significant inhibition of the rise in [Ca2+]i. High concentrations of glucose produced a dose dependent shrinkage of PMNL volume over a period of two hours. The volume of PMNL, however, was normal after 24 hours in vitro incubation studies as well as after 1, 2 and 12 days of streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemia in rats. The results are consistent with the formulation that the osmotic activity (cell shrinkage) of the high glucose concentrations activates G protein(s) which then stimulates the adenylate-cAMP-protein kinase A pathway, phospholipase C system and calcium channels. The stimulation of these cellular pathways permits both calcium influx into the PMNL as well as mobilization of calcium from their intracellular stores. Both of these events contribute to the acute rise in their [Ca2+]i. It is possible that the rise in [Ca2+]i is critical for the stimulation of the events that lead to the generation and accumulation of inorganic osmolytes to restore cell volume to normal.  相似文献

Arteriosclerosis is characterized by stiffening of arteries. The incremental elastic modulus (Einc) measurement is a good marker of arterial wall stiffness. Arteriosclerosis is characterized by stiffening of arteries. Metabolic, inflammatory, and hemodynamic alterations cause structural changes and vascular complications in end‐stage renal disease. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the factors that may affect the development of arteriosclerosis by measurement of Einc in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Thirty‐two patients (16 men and 16 women) on chronic HD with a mean age of 42.2 ± 19.3 (range, 15–80) were included in the study. The carotid Einc was measured to determine arteriosclerosis by high‐resolution echo‐tracking system. Einc measurement was calculated from transcutaneous measurements of carotid arterial internal diameter and wall thickness and carotid pulse pressure. Common carotid compliance (CCC) and distensibility (CCD) were determined from changes in carotid artery diameter during systole and simultaneously measured carotid pulse pressure. Serum levels of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), parathormone (PTH), ferritin, C‐reactive protein (CRP), predialysis systolic blood pressure (SBP), predialysis diastolic blood pressure (DBP), pulse pressure (PP), age, HD duration, CCC, and CCD were correlated with Einc in all patients. A significant positive correlation was found between Einc and age (r = 0.40, p < 0.02), SBP (r = 0.39, p < 0.02), PP (r = 0.40, p < 0.02), Ca (r = 0.43, p < 0.01), CRP (r = 0.38, p < 0.02). As expected, Einc was correlated inversely with CCD (r = ?0.77, p < 0.0001). The correlation between Einc and HD duration, DBP, ferritin, P, PTH, and CCC was not significant. In conclusion, the stiffening of carotid artery in HD patients is related not only to hemodynamic changes (increased SBP and PP) but also to metabolic (increased Ca) and inflammatory (increased CRP) responses. Carotid Einc is an accepted independent risk factor for cardiovascular mortality. Because of the positive correlation between Einc and serum Ca, vitamin D and Ca‐containing P binder should be used carefully in HD patients.  相似文献
