Effects of genotype and treatment on the antioxidant activity of sweet potato in Taiwan

Six genotypes of sweet potato commercially available in Taiwan, including TNG57, TNG66, TNG68, TYY1, RP and WP, were used as samples in this study of the effects of steaming and kneading with pre-steaming treatments on the antioxidant components and antioxidant properties of methanolic extracts. Steam treatment increased the total phenols contents of all genotypes (2–13 times), flavonoids content of RP (1.3 times) and anthocyanins contents of RP and WP (5–6 times). Steam treatment also increased the reducing power and scavenging DPPH radical effect of sweet potato flours. For the methanolic extracts of steamed and kneaded flours, reducing powers were 0.02–1.70 at 5.0 mg ml⁻¹ and the scavenging effects on DPPH radicals were 19–92% at 2.5 mg ml⁻¹. Both showed the order of RP > WP > TYY1 and TNG66 > TNG57 and TNG68. However, the chelating effect of the six genotypes at 1.0 mg ml⁻¹ ranged from 50% to 73%. Contents of total phenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins of sweet potato flours were significantly positively correlated with the reducing power and scavenging DPPH radical effects. After steaming and kneading treatments, RP showed the highest increase in the contents of total phenols, flavonoids and anthocyanins among the six genotypes studied.     

Automatic conversion from lexical words to prosodic words for mandarin text-to-speech system

In real speech, not like lexical words (LWs), prosodic words (PWs) are basic rhythmic units. The naturalness of a Text-to-Speech (TTS) system is directly influenced by the segmentation of the PWs. Most of the PWs are the combination of several LWs. In this paper, three Lexical Combination Models are proposed to combine LWs into PWs, including a Directed Acyclic Graph Model, a Segmentation Model and a Markov Model (MM). To cope with the situation where some long LWs should be segmented into two or more PWs, a Lexical Split Model (LSM) is applied to the long LWs. Experimental results prove that relatively constant results with various training data can be obtained from a MM. The Transformation-Based Error Driven Learning (TBED) algorithm, for its high performance of individual property, is applied in combination with the MM to improve the precision of PW segmentation. Experiments show that among the three proposed models, the MM combined with TBED and LSM, leads to the best performance, in which a precision of 93.00% and a recall of 93.23% are achieved. The perception test indicates that by using PWs as the lowest prosodic units a speech sounds more natural and acceptable than by using LWs. Oxygen absorption kinetics in YBa2Cu3Ox

The oxygen absorption process in highly aligned YBa₂Cu₃O_x samples in air and in pure oxygen was studied at several constant temperatures. The process can be expressed in two steps, a chemical reaction controlled step and a diffusion controlled step. The kinetic equations are as follows respectively:

The activation energy was calculated using an Arrhenius equation. The technical conditions of heat treatment for oxygen absorption of highly aligned YBa₂Cu₃O_x crystals are discussed.

Visual insights into high-resolution earthquake Simulations.

This study focuses on the visualization of a series of large earthquake simulations collectively called TeraShake. The simulation series aims to assess the impact of San Andreas Fault earthquake scenarios in Southern California. We discuss the role of visualization in gaining scientific insight and aiding unexpected discoveries.     

部分种子成分的特征X射线在等效生物材料中衰减的测定

用Ｓｉ（Ｌｉ）探测器实现了Ｎａ、Ｍｇ、Ｓ、Ｃｌ的特征Ｘ射线在有机膜中的相对衰减以及与Ｏ、Ｋ元素的特征Ｘ射线能量相当的Ｘ射线或轫致辐射在有机膜中的相对衰减，分别得出了它们减的数学描述，并把实验得到不同能量的Ｘ射线在有机膜中的质量吸收系数与Ｂｅｒｋｅｌｅｙ的ＯＣＧ软件计算出的结果相比，相关都小于３０％。     

A clinical study in the treatment of acute bacterial infections with fleroxacin

The purpose of this clinical trial is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of fleroxacin and to compare with those of lomefloxacin. A randomized controlled study was carried out to treat sixty patients with urinary tract and respiratory tract bacterial infections, thirty in each group with one of the two drugs, and fifty cases were treated with fleroxacin in an open trial. Altogether there were one hundred and ten cases. Both fleroxacin and lomefloxacin were given orally, the dosage was 200 mg every 12 hours or 400 mg every 24 hours for 7-14 days. The clinical efficacy rate was 93.3%; the culturing rate in the fleroxacin group was 83.3%; the bacterial clearance rate was 92.3%, the incidence of adverse reactions was 9.4%, while in the lomefloxacin group they were 90.0%, 80.0%, 87.5% and 6.7% respectively, with no statistically significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). In the open and randomized trials, fleroxacin cured eighty cases of bacterial infections, the overall clinical efficacy rate was 90.0%, the culturing rate in the flero-xacin group was 83.8%, the bacterial clearance rate was 88.2% and the incidence of adverse reactions was 9.6%. It is shown that fleroxacin is an antibiotic of broad-spectrum, high efficacy and safety.
