Efficient algorithms for processing large volumes of data are very important both for relational and new object-oriented database systems. Many query-processing operations can be implemented using sort- or hash-based algorithms, e.g. intersections, joins, and duplicate elimination. In the early relational database systems, only sort-based algorithms were employed. In the last decade, hash-based algorithms have gained acceptance and popularity, and are often considered generally superior to sort-based algorithms such as merge-join. In this article, we compare the concepts behind sort- and hash-based query-processing algorithms and conclude that (1) many dualities exist between the two types of algorithms, (2) their costs differ mostly by percentages rather than by factors, (3) several special cases exist that favor one or the other choice, and (4) there is a strong reason why both hash- and sort-based algorithms should be available in a query-processing system. This study unites investigations into the linguistic relativity of color categories with research on children's category acquisition. Naming, comprehension, and memory for colors were tracked in 2 populations over a 3-year period. Children from a seminomadic equatorial African culture, whose language contains 5 color terms, were compared with a group of English children. Despite differences in visual environment, language, and education, they showed similar patterns of term acquisition. Both groups acquired color vocabulary slowly and with great individual variation. Those knowing no color terms made recognition errors based on perceptual distance, and the influence of naming on memory increased with age. An initial perceptually driven color continuum appears to be progressively organized into sets appropriate to each culture and language. tRNA (m5U54)-methyltransferase (RUMT) catalyzes the S-adenosylmethionine-dependent methylation of uridine-54 in the T psi C-loop of all transfer RNAs in E. coli to form the 54-ribosylthymine residue. However, in all tRNA structures, residue 54 is completely buried and the question arises as to how RUMT gains access to the methylation site. A 17-mer RNA hairpin consisting of nucleotides 49-65 of the T psi-loop is a substrate for RUMT. Homonuclear NMR methods in conjunction with restrained molecular dynamics (MD) methods were used to determine the solution structure of the 17-mer T-arm fragment. The loop of the hairpin exhibits enhanced flexibility which renders the conventional NMR average structure less useful compared to the more commonly found situation where a molecule exists in predominantly one major conformation. However, when resorting to softer refinement methods such as MD with time-averaged restraints, the conflicting restraints in the loop can be satisfied much better. The dynamic structure of the T-arm is represented as an ensemble of 10 time-clusters. In all of these, U54 is completely exposed. The flexibility of the T psi-loop in solution in conjunction with extensive binding studies of RUMT with the T psi C-loop and tRNA suggest that the specificity of the RUMT/ tRNA recognition is associated with tRNA tertiary structure elements. For the methylation, RUMT would simply have to break the tertiary interactions between the D- and T-loops, leading to a melting of the T-arm structure and making U54 available for methylation.  相似文献

Neurologic evaluation should be performed in horses with diseases of the head. Although neurologic examination should focus on assessing behavior, mental status, and cranial nerve evaluation, evaluation of neurologic function of other body regions should be performed. Neurologic evaluation of the head can be performed expediently by practitioners to provide useful diagnostic and prognostic information. The numerous causes of dysphagia can be classified as obstructive, painful, or neurogenic. Common causes of neurogenic dysphagia are summarized, and methods for initial diagnosis and management are described. Maintaining adequate nutrition and preventing aspiration pneumonia are principal concerns in managing horses with neurogenic dysphagia.  相似文献

A national survey of school psychologists' acceptability of psychological assessment techniques in the area of externalizing problem behaviors was examined. School psychologists' ratings of 2 procedures, Behavioral Assessment (BA) and Traditional Assessment (TA), were compared using an analog case study methodology. Using a random sample of 500 National Association of School Psychologists members from the 1991–1992 membership directory, 339 Ss completed the Assessment Rating Profile after reading a hypothetical case summary describing a student with suspected externalizing problem behaviors. Results indicated statistically significant differences between assessment methods and ratings of acceptability. BA procedures were found to be more acceptable than TA procedures. Implications related to the acceptability of psychological assessment techniques, as well as implications for school psychology practitioners are discussed. A system for real-time measurements of the current-density distribution in electron beams ejected from large-area electron accelerators has been developed. The system, which is based on Faraday cups, a microprocessor, and a PC, is designed for measuring the parameters of the electron beams ejected from large-area accelerators—devices for ionizing electroionization lasers and technological accelerators—and ensures real-time monitoring of the current-density distribution over the electron-beam cross section with a relative measurement accuracy of at least ±2%.  相似文献

The relationship between teachers' judgments versus actual performance on curriculum-based measures in reading was examined. A total of 30 regular education teachers were asked to predict the oral reading fluency score of students along with a rating scale of reading subskills. Correlations between teacher judgment measures and student performance found that teachers were accurate reporters of student performance levels in reading. However, some questions were raised whether teachers were accurate at predicting the actual level of student oral reading fluency when effect sizes were used to compare teacher judgment and actual student performance.
