Purpose

To investigate characteristics of the eyelid margins, meibomian glands and the tear film of contact lens wearers, and to determine whether these characteristics were related to symptoms of contact lens discomfort.

Methods

A cross sectional study was performed on thirty existing daily wear soft contact lens wearers (6 male; 24 female) with median age of 23 years (range 18–41). Eyelid signs and tear film characteristics were evaluated during a single visit and subjects completed the contact lens and dry eye questionnaire (CLDEQ-8) to evaluate ocular discomfort.

Results

Based on the CLDEQ-8 responses, subjects were classified as symptomatic (n?=?17) or asymptomatic (n?=?13). Grades of foam at meibomian gland orifices (3?±?1), expressibility (2?±?1) and quality of secretions (2?±?1), tear evaporation rate with (112?±?54?g/m2/h) or without (88?±?45?g/m2/h) contact lens wear, fluorescein tear breakup time (8?±?2 seconds) and tear lipid layer thickness (45?±?17?nm) were significantly associated with symptoms of discomfort in symptomatic lens wearers only (r2?>?0.45; p value?<?0.05). Upper lid-wiper epitheliopathy, meibomian gland acini reflectivity and tear meniscus height showed significant correlations with comfort scores in both symptomatic and asymptomatic contact lens wearers (p?<?0.05). A greater number of Demodex mites was also observed in the upper eyelid of symptomatic lens wearers (2?±?1) compared to asymptomatic lens wearers (0?±?0; p value?=?0.042).

Conclusions

Morphological irregularities of the meibomian glands and alterations to tear film secretions that affect tear evaporative dynamics were associated with symptoms of discomfort amongst the symptomatic lens wearers.  相似文献

A series of imidazo[2,1‐b][1,3,4]thiadiazole‐linked oxindoles composed of an A, B, C and D ring system were synthesized and investigated for anti‐proliferative activity in various human cancer cell lines; test compounds were variously substituted at rings C and D. Among them, compounds 7 ((E)‐5‐fluoro‐3‐((6‐p‐tolyl‐2‐(3,4,5‐trimethoxyphenyl)‐imidazo[2,1‐b][1,3,4]thiadiazol‐5‐yl)methylene)indolin‐2‐one), 11 ((E)‐3‐((6‐p‐tolyl‐2‐(3,4,5‐trimethoxyphenyl)imidazo[2,1‐b][1,3,4]thiadiazol‐5‐yl)methylene)indolin‐2‐one), and 15 ((E)‐6‐chloro‐3‐((6‐phenyl‐2‐(3,4,5‐trimethoxyphenyl)imidazo[2,1‐b][1,3,4]thiadiazol‐5‐yl)methylene)indolin‐2‐one) exhibited potent anti‐proliferative activity. Treatment with these three compounds resulted in accumulation of cells in G2/M phase, inhibition of tubulin assembly, and increased cyclin‐B1 protein levels. Compound 7 displayed potent cytotoxicity, with an IC50 range of 1.1–1.6 μM , and inhibited tubulin polymerization with an IC50 value (0.15 μM ) lower than that of combretastatin A‐4 (1.16 μM ). Docking studies reveal that compounds 7 and 11 bind with αAsn101, βThr179, and βCys241 in the colchicine binding site of tubulin.  相似文献

Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMIBF4) is used as the solvent for the first time to prepare multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) supported nanocomposite catalysts of PdxNiy (atomic ratios of Pd to Ni are 1:1, 1:1.5, 1:2, and 1:2.5) nanoparticles (denoted as PdxNiy/MWCNTs) by using a simple pyrolysis process. The PdxNiy/MWCNTs catalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results show that the PdxNiy nanoparticles (NPs) are quite uniformly dispersed on the surface of MWCNTs with an average crystallite size of ∼7.0 nm. The electro-catalytic activity of the PdxNiy/MWCNTs catalysts for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) is examined by cyclic voltammetry (CV). It is revealed that the onset potential is ∼80 mV lower and the peak current is about three times higher for ethanol oxidation for MWCNT catalysts with Pd1Ni1.5 compared to those of Pd/MWCNTs. The catalytic mechanisms of the Pd1Ni1.5/MWCNTs towards EOR are also proposed and discussed.  相似文献

A palladium/magnesium‐lanthanum mixed oxide catalyst is found to be an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the chemoselective hydrogenation of olefinic double bonds in the presence of various functional groups. The catalyst was recovered by centrifugation and reused for several cycles with consistent activity and selectivity.  相似文献

A simple one‐step approach for the preparation of highly monodispersed nano copper(0) stabilized on alumina [Cu(0)/Al2O3] by thermal reduction of copper‐aluminium hydrotalcite (Cu‐Al HT) under a hydrogen atmosphere is described. The transformation of Cu‐Al HT to Cu(0)/Al2O3 occurrs via dehydroxylation of divalent and trivalent metal hydroxides and decarboxylation of carbonate anions present in the interlayers of hydrotalcite, as confirmed by XPS, XANES, XRD and TEM analysis. Cu(0)/Al2O3 nano composites were used as an efficient catalyst in the C C coupling of deactivated aryl chlorides. The high efficiency and reusability exhibited by Cu(0)/Al2O3 outline its potential as an alternative over traditional noble metal‐based catalysts in C C coupling reactions.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In this work, the solid‐liquid extraction of terbium from phosphoric acid solutions using solvent‐impregnated resin containing TOPS 99, an equivalent of di‐2‐ethylhexyl phosphoric acid, has been investigated. The parameters studied include equilibration time, acid concentration, amount of resin, metal concentration, kinetics, temperature, loading, elution, regeneration and recycling. RESULTS: FT‐IR results confirm the physical interaction of the extractant with the resin. The extraction of terbium with TOPS 99 impregnated Amberlite XAD 4 resin was acid dependent and transfer of metal follows a cation exchange mechanism. The loading capacity of TOPS 99‐impregnated resin for terbium was calculated to be 23.8 mg g?1 resin. Controlling mechanism of the adsorption was found to be a chemical reaction following pseudo‐second‐order kinetics. The endothermic nature of extraction was confirmed by temperature studies. Among the various eluants studied, H2SO4 was the best. Regeneration and recycling of the resin indicated the resin can be used for continuous cycles. CONCLUSIONS: Terbium was successfully extracted from phosphoric acid using TOPS 99 extractant impregnated into Amberlite XAD4 with a maximum loading of 23.8 mg g?1 resin and fully recovered with 1 mol L?1sulfuric acid. The resin was subjected to seven cycles of extraction and elution without any loss of performance. Further studies showed that terbium could be separated from lutetium. Assimilation and forecast experiments have been carried out in this study using conventional observations as well as total precipitable water and surface wind data retrieved from the Special Sensor for Microwave Imaginary (SSM/I) sensors. The main objectives of this study were to document the bias in short-range predictions of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) version 3.1 model over the Indian region during the summer monsoon season and the impact of SSM/I data. All the experiments were carried out in the monsoon seasons of 2001 as a part of pilot phase studies for the South Asian Regional Reanalysis (SARR) project. It is seen that the model has strong bias in wind forecasts over the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. A cyclonic bias in the forecasts exists over south-west India. Over the equatorial Indian Ocean, a strong southerly bias towards the Bay of Bengal is noticed. The model has a systematic bias to increase moisture over most parts of the equatorial Indian Ocean. Except over the Gangetic plains, the model exhibits dry bias with reduced moisture over most parts of India in 24 hour forecasts. The impact of assimilation of SSM/I products has been to increase the moisture over the Bay of Bengal, where the model has shown dry bias. The moisture content over the equatorial Indian Ocean (western sector) reduced significantly after assimilation of SSM/I data, where the model has a tendency to enhance moisture. Major rainfall zones during the monsoon season are brought out well in 6 hour forecasts by the model; however, the rainfall amount increased over the Bay of Bengal due to the assimilation of SSM/I data. These features are consistent with the moisture and wind differences between the two assimilation experiments. A quantitative verification of model rainfall in terms of equitable threat scores indicate that the accuracy of rainfall products is higher when SSM/I data are assimilated. It is seen that the general pattern of rainfall tendency in 24 hour forecasts remains the same irrespective of whether the forecast initial conditions are with or without SSM/I data. Examination of a case of monsoon depression showed that assimilation of SSM/I data improved the analysis.  相似文献

This article provides an overview of current research activities on the synthesis and applications of magnetic nanocomposites, especially highlights their potential environmental remediations such as heavy metal (Cr, As, Pd, Hg) removal. After a brief introduction of the emergency situation of heavy metal pollution all over the world and current techniques designed to deal with these situations, different synthetic methods to fabricate various types of magnetic nanocomposites will be reviewed. The focus is to reveal the advantages of magnetic nanocomposites as an efficient adsorbent which is able to reduce the heavy metal concentrations well below the EPA requirement. At the same time, the conventional process can be redesigned to be an economic and energetic one without using extra energy to recycle the adsorbent, which is desired for future. This review mainly deals with the heavy metal removal using magnetic nanocomposites, the adsorption behaviors of heavy metal ions on the surface of novel adsorbents are well investigated including the concentration effect of both contaminants and adsorbents, adsorption kinetics, solution pH effect with regards to real application.  相似文献
