Scheduling projects is a difficult and time consuming process, and has far-reaching implications for any organization’s operations. By generalizing various aspects of project scheduling, decision makers are enabled to capture reality and act accordingly. In the context of the MISTA 2013 conference, the first MISTA challenge, organized by the authors, introduced such a general problem model: the Multi-Mode Resource-Constrained Multi-Project Scheduling Problem (MRCMPSP). The present paper reports on the competition and provides a discussion on its results. Furthermore, it provides an analysis of the submitted algorithms, and a study of their common elements. By making all benchmark datasets and results publicly available, further research on the MRCMPSP is stimulated.  相似文献

Currently many service providers offer their services on a private and proprietary hard- and software infrastructure. These infrastructures often share many similarities. Hence we believe a generic service management architecture, that allows service providers to offer a large array of different services on a single infrastructure or multiple providers to offer their services cooperatively, would provide many advantages over current silo-based approaches. Additionally, by allowing the distributed service management components to cooperate in a peer-to-peer overlay network, scalability and resilience of the system could be greatly improved.In this paper we propose an optimal algorithm, based on an integer linear programming (ILP) formulation, and several heuristics to support such a generic overlay-based service management architecture. More specifically, we propose algorithms for dynamically allocating server and network resources to a set of services and selecting a suitable service instance for each client. Service instances are placed on a set of servers, taking into account server resource constraints (e.g. CPU and memory). Unlike existing algorithms for this problem, those proposed in this paper also support service level agreements (SLAs), which take the form of Quality of Service demands such as transmission latency constraints and bandwidth requirements. The optimisation goal is to maximise the percentage of satisfied demand (answered requests) and minimise the total number of required overlay servers, while satisfying the SLAs and resource constraints. Additionally, we propose an extension that allows the algorithms to find overlay routing paths to improve the transmission latency for latency-sensitive services.Extensive simulations were performed to evaluate the performance and scalability of the heuristics. They showed that in many cases the heuristics perform close to optimal and they scale well in terms of network size.  相似文献

Arthrobacter spp. are very widely distributed in the environment (e.g., soil) but have not been described as causing disease in humans. Over a 6-year period, two reference laboratories isolated or received 11 strains which were eventually identified as belonging to the genus Arthrobacter. These strains had been initially identified as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention coryneform group B-1 and B-3 bacteria (whitishgrayish colonies of 2 mm or greater in diameter after 24 h of incubation, respiratory metabolism, absent or weak acid production from sugars, and hydrolysis of gelatin). However, chemotaxonomic investigations revealed lysine as the diamino acid of the cell wall and the presence of branched cellular fatty acids (with anteiso-pentadecanoic acid predominating) which was compatible with an assignment of the 11 isolates to the genus Arthrobacter only. Peptidoglycan and 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses demonstrated that three of the strains studied were representatives of a new Arthrobacter species for which the name Arthrobacter cumminsii sp. nov. is proposed and that one other strain represented a second new Arthrobacter species for which the name Arthrobacter woluwensis sp. nov. is proposed. This report is the first on the isolation of Arthrobacter spp. from clinical specimens.  相似文献

Network and service management is an established research field within the general area of computer networks. A few years ago, an initial taxonomy, organizing a comprehensive list of terms and topics, was established through interviews with experts from both industry and academia. This taxonomy has since been used to better partition standardization efforts, identify classes of managed objects and improve the assignment of reviewers to papers submitted in the field. Because the field of network and service management is rapidly evolving, a biyearly update of the taxonomy was proposed. In this paper, a large-scale questionnaire is presented which was answered by experts in the field, evaluating the relevance of each individual topic for the next five years. Missing topics, which are likely to become relevant over the next few years, are identified as well. Furthermore, an analysis is performed of the records of papers submitted to major conferences in the area. Based on the obtained results, an updated version of the taxonomy is proposed.  相似文献

HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) is becoming the de facto standard for video streaming services over the Internet. In HAS, each video is segmented and stored in different qualities. Rate adaptation heuristics, deployed at the client, allow the most appropriate quality level to be dynamically requested, based on the current network conditions. It has been shown that state‐of‐the‐art heuristics perform suboptimal when sudden bandwidth drops occur, therefore leading to freezes in the video playout, the main factor influencing users' quality of experience (QoE). This issue is aggravated in case of live events, where the client‐side buffer has to be kept as small as possible in order to reduce the playout delay between the user and the live signal. In this article, we propose a framework capable of increasing the QoE of HAS clients by reducing video freezes. The framework is based on OpenFlow, a widely adopted protocol to implement the software‐defined networking principle. An OpenFlow controller is in charge of introducing prioritized delivery of HAS segments, based on the network conditions and the HAS clients' status. Particularly, the HAS clients' status is obtained without any explicit clients‐to‐controller communication, and thus, no extra signaling is introduced into the network. Moreover, this OpenFlow controller is transparent to the quality decision process of the clients, as it assists the delivery of the segments, but it does not determine the actual quality to be requested. In order to provide a comprehensive analysis of the proposed approach, we investigate the performance of the proposed OpenFlow‐based framework in the presence of realistic Internet cross‐traffic. Particularly, we model two types of applications, namely, HTTP web browsing and progressive download video streaming, which currently represent the majority of Internet traffic together with HAS. By evaluating this novel approach through emulation in several multi‐client scenarios, we show how the proposed approach can reduce freeze time for the HAS clients due to network congestion up to 10 times compared with state‐of‐the‐art heuristics, without impacting the performance of the cross‐traffic applications.
