High prevalence of polycystic ovaries and associated clinical, endocrine, and metabolic features in women with previous gestational diabetes mellitus

The prevalence of polycystic ovaries, according to ultrasonography, and associated clinical, endocrine, and metabolic features were investigated in women with previous gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Thirty-four women with GDM 3-5 yr before the investigation and 36 controls with uncomplicated pregnancies, selected for similar age, parity, and date of delivery, were investigated. The women with previous GDM showed a higher prevalence of polycystic ovaries [14 of 34 (41%) vs. 1 of 36 (3%); P < 0.0001], hirsutism (P < 0.01), irregular menstrual cycles (P < 0.01), and a higher body mass index (BMI; P < 0.001) than the controls. Five women (15%) with previous GDM had developed manifest diabetes (excluded in comparisons of metabolic variables). After dividing the women with previous GDM into subgroups according to ovarian appearance, the 2 subgroups showed similar glucose tolerance and prevalence of diabetes, whereas the women with polycystic ovaries were younger (mean +/- SD, 33.3 +/- 1.4 vs. 38.2 +/- 1.1; P < 0.01), had higher truncal-abdominal/femoral fat ratio according to skin folds (P < 0.05), had higher concentrations of androstenedione (P < 0.01) and testosterone (P < 0.01), and had a higher LH/FSH ratio (P < 0.01), lower levels of GH (P < 0.01), higher levels of triglycerides (P < 0.05) and cholesterol (P < 0.05) in very low density lipoprotein, all independent of age and BMI, and had a higher prevalence of pregnancy-induced hypertension (50% vs. 15%; P < 0.05) during the index pregnancy compared with the women with normal ovaries. The group of women with GDM showed a lower early insulin release after glucose (i.v. glucose tolerance test) for their degree of insulin resistance (euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp) compared with controls (P < 0.05). In the two subgroups, insulin sensitivity was lower in the polycystic ovaries group, independent of BMI (P < 0.05), than in the group with normal ovaries. In conclusion, ultrasonographic, clinical and endocrine signs of polycystic ovary syndrome were much increased in women with a history of GDM. Compared with the women with normal ovaries and previous GDM, those with polycystic ovaries formed a distinct subgroup that may be more prone to develop various features of the insulin resistance syndrome. Both groups showed a similarly disturbed balance between beta-cell activity and insulin sensitivity, but in women with polycystic ovaries, insulin resistance may be the dominant component.     

A method for measuring strip temperature in the steel industry

In the steel industry, there are many processes that include measuring and control of temperatures. With higher demand on quality, increased production, and effective energy consumption, the use of noncontact temperature measuring techniques has increased. After the cooling section in a continuous annealing-pickling line, the strip temperature is estimated by using the grey box technique. Temperatures are measured in the cavity between the strip and the roller using radiation thermometers. A model is made for estimating strip temperature using the measured temperatures and knowledge of the physics of the process.     

Antiepileptic drug treatment during pregnancy and neonatal screening results

Many antiepileptic drugs induce hepatic metabolic enzymes and thus enhance metabolism of steroid and thyroid hormones. Antiepileptic drugs readily cross the placenta and the foetal liver is metabolically active. We therefore evaluated the neonatal screening results of TSH and 17-hydroxyprogesterone in 34 study children and their matched controls. There were no statistically significant differences in the results between the groups.

ECG analysis: a new approach in human identification

A new approach in human identification is investigated. For this purpose, a standard 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) recorded during rest is used. Selected features extracted from the ECG are used to identify a person in a predetermined group. Multivariate analysis is used for the identification task. Experiments show that it is possible to identify a person by features extracted from one lead only. Hence, only three electrodes have to be attached on the person to be identified. This makes the method applicable without too much effort

The electronic head: a virtual quality instrument

This paper describes a new approach to virtual instrumentation, qualitative estimation, and decision making of a dynamically changing quality assessment. The authors illustrate this approach in an electronic head concept, in which they combine the amount of information received, and apply feature extraction analysis and a fuzzy clustering technique to assess the quality as acquired from a human expert. By combining data from different artificial sensor systems into a single set of meaningful features, they obtain information that is of greater human benefit than the aggregate of its contributing sensors. The combination of sensor data by fuzzy rules has the aim of performing human-like inferences that may be impossible by the single artificial sensors. The entire sensor system acts as a virtual instrument for dynamic industrial process monitoring. This virtual instrument allows easy sensor observation and learning interaction with a human operator     

Characterization analysis of UDSM LVTSCR under TLP stress

The characteristics of a low-voltage triggering silicon-controlled rectifier(LVTSCR) under a transmission line pulse(TLP) and the characteristics of high frequency are analyzed.The research results show that the anode series resistance has a significant effect on the key points of the snapback curve.The device characteristics can fit the requirements of a electrostatic discharge(ESD) design window by adjusting the anode series resistance. Furthermore,the set-up time of the ESD has an influence on the turn-on voltage of the LVTSCR.A steep rising edge will cause the turn-on voltage to increase.The parasitic capacitance of the device for different voltage biases and frequencies determines the capacitive impedance,and its accuracy calculation is very important to the ESD design of high frequency circuits.Our research results provide a theoretical basis for the design of an ultra-deep sub-micron(UDSM) LVTSCR structure under ESD stress and the improvement of TLP test technology.
