This study reports the crystallization of amorphous nifedipine during an interactive mixing process quantified by using isothermal and dynamic microcalorimetry. Interactive mixtures of amorphous nifedipine and uniform glass beads were prepared by mixing in a Turbula® mixer. The difference in the extent of crystallization of amorphous nifedipine during mixing was characterized by the time it took for the crystallization of a known amount of amorphous nifedipine in isothermal calorimetry and the change in the height of the crystallization peak at 65°C in dynamic calorimetry. It was found that both isothermal and dynamic microcalorimetry are useful techniques for quantifying the physical transition of amorphous nifedipine during interactive mixing. The rate and extent of crystallization of amorphous nifedipine depended on both mixing time and speed, but mixing time played a more dominant role because the transformation of amorphous to crystalline nifedipine was greater after 3180 revolutions (9.7%) than after 405 revolutions (0.9%) at 27 rpm. The same trend was observed at 109 rpm, but the percentage of crystalline nifedipine after 3180 revolutions was only 5.2%. This meant that an increase in mixing time rather than speed increased the rate of amorphous to crystalline transformation. The greatest cause for crystal transformation during interactive mixing was the presence of crystal seeds of the thermodynamically stable nifedipine Modification I because the amount of amorphous to crystalline transformation increased from 2.6% for a completely amorphous mixture to 6.6% for a 92:8 mixture of amorphous and crystalline nifedipine when mixed for 30 minutes at 106 rpm.  相似文献

The maxillary incisors occupy an extraordinary position in the dental arch. They set the aesthetic tone, and their influence on the overall well-being of the individual cannot be overemphasized. However, their eruptive pattern and dominance carries a significant risk for trauma, particularly in childhood. More than half of all traumatic dental injuries involve the central incisors. In the past, fractured teeth were either extracted, trimmed and leveled, or restored with cast restorations. The learning objective of this article is to stimulate a shift in treatment strategy towards aesthetic reattachment of fractured segments. Indications and limitations for reattachment are outlined, including the primary and secondary restorative efforts. Innovative operative techniques that improve the aesthetic, biologic, and mechanical variables of the reattachment treatment option are presented.  相似文献

This report surveys the considerable progress made over the last five years—such as the marketing of superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), cellular wireless filter systems, and high current leads—and assesses needs and opportunities in the areas of fundamental science, materials development, thin film and device applications, and wire and bulk applications. It examines the challenges facing high-temperature superconductivity: from the need to understand the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity and the unusual “normal” state to the need for new instrumentation for material characterization. Advances in thin film and bulk materials are reviewed, and obstacles impeding the commercialization of HTS materials are examined. The main objective of this study was to determine the nutritional value and the total dietary antioxidant capacity (TDAC) of lunch meals consumed by elderly people attending a day-care centre in Sharpeville, South Africa. Meals were monitored and collected for a two-week period. The menus were analysed for water, ash, fat, protein, carbohydrates, polyphenols and antioxidant capacity. Eighteen food items, grouped in seven different menus, were identified. Energy provided by the menus covered 32% of the daily reference intakes for females and 25% for males, and the distribution of macronutrients in the menus was 10%, 34% and 56% for protein, fat and carbohydrates, respectively. This is close to the prescribed acceptable macronutrient distribution ranges of 10–35% protein, 20–35% fat and 45–65% carbohydrates. TDAC available from the menus was estimated at 332 μmol Trolox equivalents by DPPH (2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and represented about 9% of the recommended daily allowance. Fruit, which represented only 2.8% of the amount of foods composing the menus, supplied 75.3% of TDAC, whilst contributions from vegetables and legumes were low. With 269 mg gallic acid equivalent in the menus, total phenolics appeared to be quantitatively the main dietary antioxidant, and were significantly correlated (r = 0.443 and p = 0.007) with antioxidant capacity. Fruit portions of the meals served by the day-care centre to the elderly of Sharpeville, need to be increased and diversified in order to reinforce their intake of antioxidants and thus reduce the incidence of non-communicable diseases.  相似文献

The results of this study report the novel use of electrostatic layer-by-layer nanoassembly of biocompatible nanoparticulate TiO2 multilayers to coat irregular nifedipine (NF) microcrystals to increase the photostability of the drug when exposed to simulated sunlight and to increase the dissolution rate and possibly the bioavailability of the drug after oral administration. The photostability of NF microcrystals (35 microm) coated with multiple bilayers of positively charged PDDA and negatively charged nanosized TiO2 particles (20-25 nm) was measured when exposed to an illuminance of 12 W/m2 corresponding to a light dose of 30 k lux or 25 W/m2 corresponding to light dose of 60 k lux. The dissolution rate of nifedipine from the coated microcrystals was measured in simulated gastric fluid containing 0.05% w/v polysorbate 80. Coating with one TiO2 layer increased the shelf life of nifedipine by 30 hours independent of the intensity of the light exposure. With an increase in the number of TiO2 layers; the photostability of the drug was enhanced even more. A TiO2 monolayer decreased the contact angle by 20 degrees for water and 33 degrees for the dissolution medium as compared with uncoated NF surfaces. This increase in wettability due to a decrease in contact angle increased the dissolution rate of nifedipine microcrystals coated with 1 PDDA/TiO2 bilayer 13-fold after 10 minutes, 5-fold after 1 hour, and 2-fold after 12 hours when compared to uncoated microcrystals. It is assumed that TiO2 increased the photostability because the nanoparticulate multilayers acts as a potential filter protecting the drug from damaging light rays reaching the drug crystals. The dissolution rate was increased because the hydrophilic TiO2 nanoparticles increased the aqueous wettability of the drug crystals thereby preventing aggregation in the dissolution medium. This ensured that the maximum drug surface area was exposed to the dissolution medium.  相似文献

The concentration of the cosurfactant 1‐butanol (BuOH) determined the polymer weight and size for a series of poly(styrene‐co‐methyl methacrylate)s (P(St‐co‐MMA)) synthesized by the free‐radical (o/w) microemulsion technique. A factorial design established the levels of the experimental conditions for the polymerization i.e., concentration of the surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS); concentration of the cosurfactant, BuOH; temperature and ratio of the styrene (St) to methyl methacrylate (MMA). An increase in the weight‐average molecular weight (Mw) and number‐average molecular weight (Mn) was observed in the P(St‐co‐MMA) series with an increase in BuOH concentration from 1 to 5 wt %. These effects could arise from the micellar aggregation induced by interfacial BuOH. The unique micellar conditions could be exploited to synthesize copolymers of varying molecular weight and size. In previous papers the mechanism and dynamics of the elution of gold cyanide from activated carbon have been investigated in detail. Sub processes such as the pre-soaking step, the degradation of cyanide, the elution of the spectator cations, the associated shift in the equilibrium of adsorption or desorption as a result of the removal of cations, the reactivation of the carbon surface, and the elution of gold cyanide have been explained quantitatively to some extent, although further work is evidently required Previous work has also shown that equilibrium conditions may be' assumed when adsorption is weak, hence when aggressive pre-soaking conditions have been used. However, these studies have not taken the competitive effect of base metals into account, although this is known to have an adverse effect on the efficiency of gold elution.The present study has shown quantitatively that copper has a significant effect on the recovery of gold. Nickel and silver also have a detrimental effect, but only if they are present as high loadings. In contrast, the elution of the base metals is to a large degree unaffected by the elution of gold. It is shown in this paper that the multi-component equilibrium relationship between the spectator cations and the various metal cyanides can be very complex, and perhaps ill-defined. In such circumstances it is preferable to use a non-parametric technique such as a back-propagation neural network to represent such an equilibrium relationship. Owing to the difficulty of estimating the final conditions of the pre-soaking step, it is not always possible to predict the exact level of equilibrium. Therefore, it could be necessary in practice to adjust the equilibrium predicted by a neural net by a factor which is dependent on the conditions of pre-soaking.  相似文献

We report results of our study of the pressure dependence of Tc in Tl0.2Hg0.8Ba2Ca2Cu3Ox to 6 GPa in a diamond anvil cell. The sample studied has an ambient Tc of 136.4 K and application of quasihydrostatic pressure raised Tc to 144.4 K at 6 GPa. We will also describe recent modifications of our ac susceptibility apparatus that have improved our sensitivity while simplifying the coil design and the balancing.  相似文献
