This paper describes the factors to be considered in designing and constructing a nine-element broadcast directional antenna for Station WISN, Milwaukee, Wisc.     

Prospective evaluation of the effects of stress on exercise adherence in community-residing women.

The effects of stress on exercise behavior in community-residing women exercising on their own were assessed. Participants (N?=?82) completed a background questionnaire and kept exercise diaries and Weekly Stress Inventories (P. J. Brantley, G. N. Jones, E. Boudreax, & S. L. Catz, 1997) for 8 consecutive weeks. During weeks with a high frequency of stressful events, participants exercised for less time and reported lower self-efficacy for meeting upcoming exercise goals. During weeks of high perceived stress, participants exercised significantly fewer days, omitted more planned exercise sessions, were less satisfied with their exercise, and had lower self-efficacy for meeting exercise goals. Findings suggest that perceptions of stressful events and cognitive reactions to missed exercise may play a significant role in mediating exercise behavior and support the view of exercise relapse as an ongoing process. Real-time cellular-level imaging and medical treatment with a swarm of wireless multifunctional robots

This is a short communication where we present a theoretical model of a swarm of wireless robots that can be used for cellular-level diagnosis and treatment of a variety of life threatening diseases such as cancer. Based on this model, we illustrate a distributed position and orientation tracking algorithm that constructs digitized images from a set of pixels transmitted by the robots of the swarm model that are in motion. Simulation results are also presented.

     

All-optical wavelength shifting of microwave subcarriers by using four-wave mixing in a semiconductor optical amplifier

We demonstrate all-optical wavelength shifting over 9 nm for two microwave subcarriers by using four-wave mixing in a semiconductor optical amplifier. In our experiment, the RF spectrum is relatively unaffected by wavelength shifting and the resultant system power penalty is /spl sim/0.5 dB. Such a transparent wavelength shifter may be a critical component in WDM networks supporting both subcarrier multiplexed (SCM) and high speed digital transmission.     

The serial measurement of mood in two brothers, renal transplant recipient and donor

The object of this study was to demonstrate the importance of serial rather than single mood measurement in patients with fluctuating moods. We serially measured anxiety, sadness, and euphoria in two brothers, renal transplant recipient and donor, for 5 months postoperatively, using the Zung State Depression Scale, the Spielberger State Anxiety Scale, and a composite scale measuring euphoria. The results were plotted in an affect chart. The affect chart of the transplant recipient who had a postoperative mixed mood disorder, showed a widely fluctuating pattern. The affect chart of his brother, who had an affectively quiet postoperative course, showed a more stable pattern. Single mood measures in complex and fluctuating affective states give an incomplete picture, which may account for some confusion in the literature. Serial mood measurement more accurately describes complex affective states. This methodology may be useful in consultation-liaison research where the affective pattern itself is being used as an outcome measure.
