OBJECTIVES: Sensory nerves play an important role in mediating neurogenic inflammation and subsequent tissue healing. A decrease in sensory nerve function with increasing age has been reported to correlate with poor tissue healing. Sympathetic nerves are known to modulate sensory nerve function, and changes in this modulation could also have important implications with ageing. The aims of this study were to examine the effect of different frequency electrical stimulation (ES) on the microvascular responses obtained to sensory nerve activation in young, aged and capsaicin-pretreated rats and modulation of these responses by sympathetic efferents. METHODS: Using laser Doppler flowmetry, vascular responses to antidromic ES of the sciatic nerve were monitored in the base of vacuum-induced blisters in the hind footpad. The non-selective alpha-adrenoceptor antagonist phentolamine (3 mg/kg, i.v.) was administered 20 min prior to ES. RESULTS: At high frequency ES (20V, 2ms, 15Hz for 1 min), the vascular response in old rats was significantly reduced (46 percent decrease, p < 0.05) compared to young control. At low frequency ES (20 V, 2 ms, 5 Hz for 1 min) however, older rats produced similar vascular responses to the young. Capsaicin-pretreated rats showed significantly reduced vascular responses to both high and low frequency ES, regardless of age. Pretreatment with phentolamine significantly increased the microvascular response in young rats at high (87 percent) and low (36 percent) frequency ES. In contrast, phentolamine significantly increased the ES-induced response in old rats at high frequency only (147 percent increase). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that the aged sensory nerve responds preferentially to low frequency ES and that sympathetic efferents exert an inhibitory modulatory effect on the vascular response evoked by sensory nerve stimulation. There are age-related changes in sympathetic modulation of sensory nerve-mediated responses which is dependent on stimulation frequency.  相似文献

Platelet adhesion and activation rates are frequently used to assess the thrombogenicity of biomaterials, which is a crucial step for the development of blood-contacting devices. Until now, electron and confocal microscopes have been used to investigate platelet activation but they failed to characterize this activation quantitatively and in real time. In order to overcome these limitations, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) was employed and an explicit time scale introduced in the dissipation versus frequency plots (Df–t) provided us with quantitative data at different stages of platelet activation. The QCM-D chips were coated with thrombogenic and non-thrombogenic model proteins to develop the methodology, further extended to investigate polymer thrombogenicity. Electron microscopy and immunofluorescence labelling were used to validate the QCM-D data and confirmed the relevance of Df–t plots to discriminate the activation rate among protein-modified surfaces. The responses showed the predominant role of surface hydrophobicity and roughness towards platelet activation and thereby towards polymer thrombogenicity. Modelling experimental data obtained with QCM-D with a Matlab code allowed us to define the rate at which mass change occurs (A/B), to obtain an A/B value for each polymer and correlate this value with polymer thrombogenicity.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that nitric oxide (NO) inhibits specific agonist-induced polymorphonuclear leukocyte (neutrophil) and platelet aggregation in vitro. However, the inhibitory effects of NO on neutrophil interaction with the deeply injured arterial wall under conditions of flow is unknown. Therefore, we investigated the influence of NO derived from the endothelium on neutrophil and platelet interactions with the downstream arterial media under controlled flow conditions. Porcine aortic media, simulating deep arterial wall injury, was exposed to flowing porcine non-anticoagulated arterial blood for 5 min at intermediate (1006 s(-1)) and high (3397 s(-1)) shear conditions, and deposition of radiolabeled neutrophils and platelets was quantified. Neutrophil deposition on the exposed arterial media was reduced, by more than 30%, by pretreatment of the endothelium with the physiological precursor of NO, L-arginine, from 84.1 +/- 13.7 to 57.4 +/- 7.2 x 10(3)/cm2 (p < 0.05) at 1006 s(-1), and from 99.3 +/- 9.8 to 65.5 +/- 8.7 x 10(3)/cm2 (p < 0.05) at 3397 s(-1) of shear rate, relative to control. Pretreatment of the endothelium with the inactive stereoisomer D-arginine had no effect on neutrophil deposition. These specific inhibitory effects of L-arginine were completely abolished by the inhibitor of NO synthesis, N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) at both shear rates. Endothelial pretreatment with D-arginine, or with L-arginine, in the absence or presence of L-NAME, did not significantly influence platelet interaction with the thrombogenic arterial media at intermediate and high shear rates. These results indicate that NO derived from the endothelium can modulate and has a greater influence on neutrophil, than on platelet, interaction with the injured arterial wall exposing the media under conditions of flow typical to moderately and severely stenosed arteries.  相似文献

The present study investigates the origin of voids in sheet molding compounds (SMCs) sheets and their transport during the manufacturing steps. Paste mixing, impregnation, thickening, and molding have been performed with five different SMC sheets, one without fibers and the others with four different types of glass fiber bundles. The fiber surface energy and bending rigidity were quantified, together with the paste surface energy. Void content was then measured at each manufacturing step. Two main void origins in SMC sheets have been observed: (i) air entrapment during paste mixing and (ii) poor bundle impregnation. These voids may be largely removed during SMC manufacturing. The quality of impregnation and void elimination during the flow is found to depend on the bundle characteristics (rigidity and surface energy) conferred by their sizing and over sizing. POLYM. We compared the effect on platelet deposition of the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor antagonist L-703,081, administered locally via a drug delivery stent, with that of a standard metal stent in a canine coronary model. There was a significant reduction in platelet deposition using the L-703,081-impregnated stent compared with the bare metal stent. This study demonstrates an alternative route of delivery of GPIIb/IIIa antagonists with potential advantages over systemic administration.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the nauseogenic properties of commercial console video games (i.e., games that are sold to the public) when presented through a head-mounted display. BACKGROUND: Anecdotal reports suggest that motion sickness may occur among players of contemporary commercial console video games. METHODS: Participants played standard console video games using an Xbox game system. We varied the participants' posture (standing vs. sitting) and the game (two Xbox games). Participants played for up to 50 min and were asked to discontinue if they experienced any symptoms of motion sickness. RESULTS: Sickness occurred in all conditions, but it was more common during standing. During seated play there were significant differences in head motion between sick and well participants before the onset of motion sickness. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that commercial console video game systems can induce motion sickness when presented via a head-mounted display and support the hypothesis that motion sickness is preceded by instability in the control of seated posture. APPLICATION: Potential applications of this research include changes in the design of console video games and recommendations for how such systems should be used.  相似文献

To characterize the nutritional status of renal failure patients and its relationship with hemodialysis adequacy measured by Kt/V, a study was carried out with a population of 44 adult patients with renal failure and mean age 51+/-15 years. Anthropometric data, such as dry weight, height, arm circumference, triceps skinfold thickness, mid-arm muscle circumference, and body mass index were assessed, and biochemical tests were conducted for urea, potassium, creatinine, serum albumin, and phosphorus levels, in addition to hemogram and quarterly urea reduction rate average (Kt/V). In order to evaluate calorie intake, a dietary questionnaire on habitual daily food ingestion was administered, taking into consideration the hemodialysis date. The patients were divided into 2 separate groups for the statistical analysis, with 50% of the patients in each group: A (Kt/V<1.2) and B (Kt/V>1.2). The data were tabulated as mean and standard deviation, with differences tested by Student's t test. The correlations between variables were established by the coefficient p of Pearson. Most of the patients (43%) were considered eutrophic, based on the BMI, and presented inadequate calorie intake, corresponding to 88.5+/-24% (30.8 kcal/kg actual weight) of the total energy required and adequate protein intake, reaching 109.9+/-40% of the recommended daily allowance (1.24 g/kg of actual weight). There was a correlation of Kt/V with anthropometric parameters such as body mass index, arm circumference, and mid-arm muscle circumference. The biochemical parameters related to dialysis adequacy were albumin, ferritin, and urea (predialysis). Well-dialyzed patients presented better levels of serum albumin. There was an influence of gender and age on correlations of the analyzed variables. Female and younger patients presented better dialysis adequacy. The dialysis adequacy was related to the nutritional status and influenced by the protein intake and body composition. Gender and age had an important influence in the dialysis adequacy, as men presented lower dialysis adequacy and younger adults presented better dialysis adequacy. Further research is necessary to understand better how to facilitate effective and efficient techniques for the nutritional status assessment of hemodialysis patients.  相似文献

Efficient target localization in wireless sensor networks is a complex and challenging task. Many past assumptions for target localization are not valid for wireless sensor networks. Limited hardware resources, energy conservation, and noise disruption due to wireless channel contention and instrumentation noise pose new constraints on designers nowadays. In this work, a lightweight acoustic target localization system for wireless sensor networks based on time difference of arrival (TDOA) is presented. When an event is detected, each sensor belonging to a group calculates an estimate of the target's location. A fuzzyART data fusion center detects errors and fuses estimates according to a decision tree based on spatial correlation and consensus vote. Moreover, a MAC protocol for wireless sensor networks (EB-MAC) is developed which is tailored for event-based systems that characterizes acoustic target localization systems. The system was implemented on MicaZ motes with TinyOS and a PIC 18F8720 microcontroller board as a coprocessor. Errors were detected and eliminated hence acquiring a fault tolerant operation. Furthermore, EB-MAC provided a reliable communication platform where high channel contention was lowered while maintaining high throughput.  相似文献

The correlation between sizing formulation, bundle mechanical characteristics, and bundle–matrix static and dynamic interactions are investigated. Two glass‐fiber sizing formulations are considered, one containing polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and the other polyester/PVAc, as conventionally used in sheet molding compounds (SMC). Axial compression tests are conducted on dry two‐dimensional (2D) random suspensions. The forced packing is governed by the bending of fiber bundle segments between bundle‐bundle contact points. Benchmarking of the experimental curves with a modified theoretical model provides an estimation of the fiber bundle bending rigidity under forced packing conditions. This value is found to depend on the bundle sizing as well as on the interaction with solvents present in the matrix as is the case for SMC. Free flow and molding experiments are performed on planar SMC sheets using the two different fiber bundles as reinforcements. The results confirm the dependence of the molding energy and the SMC rheology on the bundles chemical and mechanical characteristics. POLYM. Spectral domain phase microscopy (SDPM) has been reported in the literature as a functional extension to low-coherence interferometry, which enables nanoscale measurement of a scatter's displacement. The signal in SDPM is generated from structural images that lack molecular specificity. This paper investigates the expansion of phase analysis to fluorescence self-interference signals to provide functional information about a sample. Spectral domain fluorescence coherence phase microscopy is demonstrated for nanoscale resolution motion detection of fluorescent particles with a signal-to-noise ratio limited resolution of ~10 nm. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of combining phase processing with fluorescence self-interference, which may be useful for future applications such as cell rheology.  相似文献
