How have changes in communications technology affected the way that misinformation spreads through a population and persists? To what extent do differences in the architecture of social networks affect the spread of misinformation, relative to the rates and rules by which individuals transmit or eliminate different pieces of information (cultural traits)? Here, we use analytical models and individual-based simulations to study how a ‘cultural load’ of misinformation can be maintained in a population under a balance between social transmission and selective elimination of cultural traits with low intrinsic value. While considerable research has explored how network architecture affects percolation processes, we find that the relative rates at which individuals transmit or eliminate traits can have much more profound impacts on the cultural load than differences in network architecture. In particular, the cultural load is insensitive to correlations between an individual''s network degree and rate of elimination when these quantities vary among individuals. Taken together, these results suggest that changes in communications technology may have influenced cultural evolution more strongly through changes in the amount of information flow, rather than the details of who is connected to whom. 相似文献

Aluminum (Al) is one of the most abundant elements on Earth, and its high extraction rate and industrial use make human exposure very common. As Al may be a human toxicant, it is important to investigate the effects of Al exposure, mainly at low doses and for prolonged periods, by simulating human exposure. This work aimed to study the effects of low-dose exposure to chloride aluminum (AlCl3) on the oxidative biochemistry, proteomic profile, and morphology of the major salivary glands. Wistar male rats were exposed to 8.3 mg/kg/day of AlCl3 via intragastric gavage for 60 days. Then, the parotid and submandibular glands were subjected to biochemical assays, proteomic evaluation, and histological analysis. Al caused oxidative imbalance in both salivary glands. Dysregulation of protein expression, mainly of those related to cytoarchitecture, energy metabolism and glandular function, was detected in both salivary glands. Al also promoted histological alterations, such as acinar atrophy and an increase in parenchymal tissue. Prolonged exposure to Al, even at low doses, was able to modulate molecular alterations associated with morphological impairments in the salivary glands of rats. From this perspective, prolonged Al exposure may be a risk to exposed populations and their oral health. 相似文献

Mercury is a severe environmental pollutant with neurotoxic effects, especially when exposed for long periods. Although there are several evidences regarding mercury toxicity, little is known about inorganic mercury (IHg) species and cerebellum, one of the main targets of mercury associated with the neurological symptomatology of mercurial poisoning. Besides that, the global proteomic profile assessment is a valuable tool to screen possible biomarkers and elucidate molecular targets of mercury neurotoxicity; however, the literature is still scarce. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of long-term exposure to IHg in adult rats’ cerebellum and explore the modulation of the cerebellar proteome associated with biochemical and functional outcomes, providing evidence, in a translational perspective, of new mercury toxicity targets and possible biomarkers. Fifty-four adult rats were exposed to 0.375 mg/kg of HgCl2 or distilled water for 45 days using intragastric gavage. Then, the motor functions were evaluated by rotarod and inclined plane. The cerebellum was collected to quantify mercury levels, to assess the antioxidant activity against peroxyl radicals (ACAPs), the lipid peroxidation (LPO), the proteomic profile, the cell death nature by cytotoxicity and apoptosis, and the Purkinje cells density. The IHg exposure increased mercury levels in the cerebellum, reducing ACAP and increasing LPO. The proteomic approach revealed a total 419 proteins with different statuses of regulation, associated with different biological processes, such as synaptic signaling, energy metabolism and nervous system development, e.g., all these molecular changes are associated with increased cytotoxicity and apoptosis, with a neurodegenerative pattern on Purkinje cells layer and poor motor coordination and balance. In conclusion, all these findings feature a neurodegenerative process triggered by IHg in the cerebellum that culminated into motor functions deficits, which are associated with several molecular features and may be related to the clinical outcomes of people exposed to the toxicant. 相似文献

The main objective of this work was to investigate the characteristics of the in vitro release of β-carotene encapsulated in poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) using the solution enhanced dispersion by supercritical fluids (SEDS) technique. The release tests were performed using encapsulated complex with solute loading from 2.24 to 27.5% and encapsulation efficiency from 7.75 to 55.54%. The release profile assays were performed in ethyl acetate, n-hexane and anhydrous ethanol, and monitored by UV-vis spectrophotometer concentration analysis. Results indicated higher initial release rates in ethyl acetate and in n-hexane, with cumulative release percentage varying from 31.50 to 69.58% and from 42.08 to 55.96%, respectively. For anhydrous ethanol the maximum concentration was reached at 180 min, 300 min and 10 days, depending on the initial amount of β-carotene, with cumulative release ranging from 45.27 to 88.22%. In general, the β-carotene release can be controlled by the organic solvent used and by the initial amount of solute encapsulated, aspects that help the selection of the conditions to achieve the desired release profiles for a specific application. 相似文献

Describes a 12-wk group therapy program used with more than 50 preadolescent children (aged 7–12 yrs) who have experienced intrafamilial sexual abuse. A cotherapy model is used. 90-min group sessions consist of 4 parts: circle time, focused activities, diary time, and snack. Activities are designed to highlight (1) development of trust, cohesiveness, and safety; (2) identification and labeling of feelings; (3) discussion of family relationships and family changes; and (4) exploration of issues associated with the offender. Sessions also examine legal issues and concerns and focus on self-esteem enhancement, social skills development, sex education, prevention of future abuse, and termination issues. The main objective of this work was to investigate the application of supercritical carbon dioxide as anti-solvent for the encapsulation of β-carotene in poly(hydroxybutirate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) with dichloromethane as organic solvent using the Solution Enhanced Dispersion by Supercritical fluids (SEDS) technique. For the precipitation experiments with pure compounds the parameters investigated were the concentration of β-carotene (4 and 8 mg mL−1) and PHBV (30 mg mL−1) in the organic solution, pressure (from 80 to 200 bar), solution flow rate fixed at 1 mL min−1, anti-solvent flow rate at 40 mL min−1 and constant temperature of 313 K. Pure β-carotene precipitation indicates that an increase in pressure led in most cases to particles with larger sizes, while the opposite trend was verified for pure PHBV precipitation. The morphology of precipitated PHBV particles was spherical and was not influenced by increasing pressure. The morphology of β-carotene microparticles changed from plate-like to leaf-like particles when raising operational pressure, but was not influenced by its concentration in the organic solution as verified by micrographs of scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). For the co-precipitation experiments it was evaluated the effect of β-carotene concentration (2-30 mg mL−1) in the organic solution, at fixed parameters: PHBV concentration (30 mg mL−1) in organic solution, temperature at 313 K, pressure at 80 bar, solution flow rate at 1 mL min−1 and anti-solvent flow rate at 40 mL min−1. The encapsulation data showed that increasing the concentration of β-carotene, keeping fixed the PHBV content, results in higher percentage of solute encapsulated, increasing the encapsulation efficiency. 相似文献

This article describes the design and theoretical foundations of the Pool Cool Diffusion Trial and reports 1st-year findings. Aims of the study are to evaluate the effects of 2 strategies for diffusion of the Pool Cool sun safety program on implementation, maintenance, and sustainability; improvements in environmental supports for sun safety in swimming pools; and sun protection habits and sunburn among participating children. There was a high rate of program participation (86.6%; n=375 swimming pools) in the 1st year and somewhat lower study participation (75.8%). Analysis of pool manager surveys revealed a time effect for overall sun safety programs and for sun safety policies, environmental strategies, and programs for pool users. There were few differences in implementation between treatment groups in year one. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved) 相似文献

Using experimental paradigms from economics and social psychology, the authors examined the cross-cultural applicability of 3 widely held assumptions about preference and choice: People (a) recruit or construct preferences to make choices; (b) choose according to their preferences; and (c) are motivated to express their preferences in their choices. In 6 studies, they compared how middle-class North American and Indian participants choose among consumer products. Participants in both contexts construct nonrandom preferences at similar speeds. Those in Indian contexts, however, are slower to make choices, less likely to choose according to their personal preferences, and less motivated to express their preferences in their choices. The authors infer that the strong link between preferences and choices observed among North Americans is not a universal feature of human nature. Instead, this link reflects the disjoint model of agency, which prescribes that people should choose freely on the basis of their preferences. In contrast, Indian contexts reflect and promote a conjoint model of agency, according to which agency is responsive to the desires and expectations of important others and may require restraining one's preferences.
