Experimental psychologists in industry: Perspectives of employers, employees, and educators.

The Task Force on the Employment of Experimental Psychologists in Industry, formed in 1982, conducted 3 surveys to assess the roles of traditionally trained psychologists in nonacademic research settings. The surveyed groups were 209 psychology department chairs, 46 recent recipients of PhDs who had taken nonacademic jobs, and approximately 60 industrial employers at managerial levels. Findings indicate the need for (1) changes in attitude and style in graduate training, (2) course work to relate to industry, (3) increases in internships and practica offered, and (4) strong positive relations between industry and academic psychology. Proceedings of the fifty-fourth Annual Meeting of the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology.

Approximately 200 attended the meeting held on April 19-21, 1962 in Memphis, Tennessee. Comment on Publication Trends in American Psychology.

Comments on the increase of publications between 1953 and 1958 in American psychology. Recommendations were offered on how to handle the increase in publications. An information analysis of verbal and motor responses to symbolic and conventional Arabic numerals.

The responses of Ss to 2 sets of Arabic numerals—one conventional, the other drawn from an 8-line square matrix—were compared. 24 Ss pressed keys to indicate the numeral exposed; 24 Ss called out the numeral. With the verbal responses group, the conventional numerals were consistently superior to the symbolic numerals. With the motor response group, no difference between the numeral sets was found. Proceedings of the fifty-sixth annual meeting of the Southern Socety for Philosophy and Psychology.

"The 56th Annual Meeting of the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology was held on March 26-28, 1964, at the Phoenix Hotel in Lexington, Kentucky. The meeting was held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Kentucky Psychological Association. Approximately 325 members, friends, and guests attended. The program consisted of 1 symposium in philosophy and 4 in psychology, 25 papers in philosophy and 31 in psychology, and 3 joint sessions. Potentials for productivity enhancement from psychological research and development.

Reviews the nature of a pressing national problem—decline in US productivity growth—and discusses the vague concept of productivity as described in the current literature. The authors observed that traditional psycholgical approaches to productivity enhancement have tended to concentrate on employee or organizational productivity at the micro-economic level. It is argued that psychological research and development has much greater improvement potential at the macro-economic (i.e., national) productivity level. An example is given of possible contributions of psychological research and development with regard to improving the accuracy and utility of economic forecasts. Behavioral effects of infectious diseases: Phlebotomus fever in man.

Employed the synthetic work technique to assess the behavioral effects of a self-limiting viral infection, Phlebotomus (Sandfly) fever. Average efficiency, as measured with the mean percentage of base line performance, fell about 18 and 25% with 2 groups of 8 experimental Ss each as compared with 4 uninfected controls. These are not as great as the 25-33% decrements in performance previously observed in more severe cases of bacterial infection with respiratory Pasteurella tularensis (Rabbit fever or tularemia). Ss differed greatly in their behavioral reactions to infection, ranging from essentially no decrement to maximum decrements of about 14% (Sandfly fever) and 20% (tularemia) of base line performance per degree rise in body temperature during the febrile period.
