On the basis of recent work by W. Gardner (1995), implications of fallible observers for observational research are discussed. Analysis shows that for identically fallible observers, values for kappa are lower when codes are few and their simple probabilities variable than when codes are many and roughly equiprobable; thus no one value of kappa can be regarded as universally acceptable. Additional analysis shows that fallible measurement degrades indices of sequential pattern more when codes are few and their simple probabilities variable. Finally, a simulation study establishes likely values for intraclass correlation reliabilities for sequential indices generated by various circumstances and suggests principled ways to select both lengths of sequences and acceptable levels of kappa for observational studies. Adults are often viewed as skilled interpreters who understand infants' acts even when they are unconventional and diffuse. The first step in interpretation—the selection of acts from the stream of behavior—is examined here. One hundred forty adults (mothers and fathers and other men and women) viewed videotapes of 9-, 15-, and 21-month-old infants. One half of the subjects were asked to note times when they thought the baby performed a meaningful act; the other half of the subjects were asked to note an intentionally communicative act. Times were recorded by a microcomputer. Parents selected more meaningful acts than nonparents and agreed more about selection of all acts. All subjects agreed more about intentionally communicative than about meaningful acts, at least for older infants. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Factor analyzed the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME) item scores of 213 low-income Black (67%) and White (33%) urban mothers (mean age 22.9 yrs) of 13–30 mo old infants to determine the extent to which the existing subscales were evident. Emotional and Verbal Responsivity, and Avoidance of Punishment were apparent as distinct, independent factors. Items from 3 other subscales (Play Materials, Maternal Involvement, and Variety), which reflected concept-development toys, maternal involvement in children's play, and story-reading activities, loaded on a 3rd factor designated in the present study as Support for Intellectual Development. The HOME's predictive ability with respect to intellectual development was the most dependent on items reflecting the materials for learning provided by the mother and her instrumental support for developmental advance. Objective: A theoretical model was used to examine the impact of risk and resistance factors on the psychological adjustment of children and adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD). Participants: One hundred eighteen children and adolescents with SCD receiving treatment at a comprehensive sickle cell center and their mothers. Measures: Included risk factors (condition parameters, functional independence, and disability stressors), resistance factors (stress processing, intrapersonal factors, and social ecological factors), and adjustment. Results: Adaptive behavior was associated with child maladjustment, severity of disability was associated with disability stress, and child competence was associated with child maladjustment. Coping did not moderate the association between stress and maladjustment, and adaptive behavior and stress did not mediate the association between severity of disability and maladjustment, as the model had predicted. Conclusions: Results support the continued use of theoretically driven models to investigate the adjustment of children and adolescents with chronic conditions and to promote comparisons of different chronic illnesses and disabling conditions… (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Assigning p values to all transitions in a matrix based on their z scores is problematic on 2 counts: The z scores may not be normally distributed, and transitions are interconnected. Permutation tests, which require far fewer assumptions, are an attractive alternative to the standard asymptotic methods for assigning significance. Moreover, when asymptotic z scores are only somewhat above their critical value and sequences are short, often the exact probabilities of permutation tests are not less than .05. Log-linear and permutation methods may be used to winnow the set of transitions initially identified as significant even further. A computer program that performs these tests is available from the authors. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Objective: Sexual prejudice and masculine gender role stress were examined as mediators of the associations between adherence to different male gender norms and aggression toward sexual minorities. This study also sought to extend past research to a community sample and use multiple methods to assess aggression. Method: Participants were 199 heterosexual men between the ages of 18 and 30 who were recruited from a large southeastern U.S. city. Participants completed measures of adherence to male gender role norms, sexual prejudice, masculine gender role stress, and aggression toward sexual minorities. Results: Associations between adherence to the status and antifemininity norms and aggression toward sexual minorities were mediated by sexual prejudice but not masculine gender role stress. The portion of unique association between adherence to the antifemininity norm and aggression toward sexual minorities was about three times larger than the portion mediated by sexual prejudice and masculine gender role stress. Conclusion: Findings provide the first multivariate evidence from a community-based sample for determinants of aggression toward sexual minorities motivated by gender role enforcement. These data support intervention programming and preventative intervention studies aimed at reducing sexual prejudice and facilitating less stereotypic attitudes about the male gender role, particularly surrounding the antifemininity norm. This investigation extends previous research documenting differences in Chinese and European American infants' facial expressivity. Chinese girls adopted by European American families, nonadopted Mainland Chinese girls, nonadopted Chinese American girls, and nonadopted European American girls responded to emotionally evocative slides and an odor stimulus. European American girls smiled more than Mainland Chinese and Chinese American girls and scored higher than Mainland Chinese girls for disgust-related expressions and overall expressivity. Adopted Chinese girls produced more disgust-related expressions than Mainland Chinese girls. Self-reported maternal strictness, aggravation, positive expressiveness, and cultural identification correlated with children's facial responses, as did number of siblings and adults in the home. Results suggest that culture and family environment influences facial expressivity, creating differences among children of the same ethnicity. Self-informant rating concordance for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms was assessed in 281 adults at the subscale (Inattention, Hyperactivity-Impulsivity) and individual symptom levels. Potential demographic, diagnostic, and informant identity moderators were also investigated. Concordance levels were similar for current and childhood symptoms. Although moderate positive correlations were found between self- and informant ratings on both subscales, informants endorsed more significant inattentive symptom severity. Kappa coefficients were variable, suggesting low concordance for certain symptoms. Sex and ADHD diagnosis moderated concordance, although effect sizes were small. These results have implications for the use of behavior rating scales in diagnosing ADHD, raise questions about the validity of self- and informant ratings, and support the need to investigate individual differences variables that may impact concordance. Adult–child interactions during stressful medical procedures were investigated in 43 pediatric patients (aged 36–212 mo) videotaped during a venipuncture procedure in the course of cancer treatment. Relations among 6 adult behavior categories (explain, distract, command to engage in coping behavior, give control to the child, praise, and criticize/threat/bargain) and 3 child behavior categories (momentary distress, cry/scream, and cope) were examined using correlational and sequential analysis. Results indicate that adult distraction resulted in increased child coping and reduced momentary distress and crying. Adult explanations did not result in a reduction of these behaviors. Attempts to give control to the child reduced child crying. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Associations of suicidality with sociodemographic characteristics, number of HIV-related symptoms, perceived stigma, depressive mood, emotional distress, and family cohesion were investigated in a sample of women with HIV infection. Of 214 women, 56% reported neither suicidal thoughts nor attempts since learning they were HIV infected, 31% reported thoughts but no attempts, and 14% reported both thoughts and attempts. Women who reported suicidal thoughts reported more HIV-related symptoms, more perceived stigma, greater depressive mood, more emotional distress, and less family cohesion than did women who reported no suicidal thoughts; women who reported both thoughts and attempts did not differ from women who reported only thoughts on these variables. Family cohesion moderated the effect of symptoms on thoughts. Those who reported suicidal thoughts reported more HIV-related symptoms only when family cohesion was relatively low.
