The emission and conductivity characteristics of oxide cathodes depend largely on the activation process. In this paper, the electrical properties of new type of oxide cathodes for cathode ray tube (CRT) application, supplied by LG Philips Displays, have been investigated in relation to different cathode activation regimes. The influence of the activation process over different durations has been investigated. A temperature of T=1425 K was chosen to be higher than the optimum cathode activation temperature (T=1200 K), and the other temperature of T=1125 K was lower than that. The electron activation energy (E) was found to vary in the range from 0.58 to 2.28 eV for cathodes activated at the higher temperature regime, and from 1.08 to 1.9 eV for those activated at the lower temperature regime. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron diffraction X-ray (EDX) analyses show a structural phase transformation in the oxide material that was activated at 1125 K for a period of 1-12 hours. The SEM mapping shows a large contamination of Ba in the top layer of oxide material. The activator agents tungsten and aluminum are found to penetrate into the BaO/spl bsol/SrO layer in two different ways. 相似文献

Houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) in which tenants share facilities are housing an increasing proportion of vulnerable adults who have limited affordable housing options. However, knowledge about how these types of property are managed is limited. In this paper, we examine the governance function of HMO landlords from the perspective of landlords/landlord agents and the tenants that live within their properties. The landlord exercises control through formal and informal risk assessment of tenants and close surveillance of them. These control mechanisms may also involve direct or indirect provision of support and care to some tenants. This illustrates the complex relationship between care and control and the extent to which both are integral to the housing management of vulnerable tenants living in HMOs. We suggest that this dual function calls for a critical examination of what constitutes a ‘good landlord’. 相似文献

Three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasound is a relatively new technique, which is well suited to imaging superficial blood vessels, and potentially provides a useful, noninvasive method for generating anatomically realistic 3-D models of the peripheral vasculature. Such models are essential for accurate simulation of blood flow using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), but may also be used to quantify atherosclerotic plaque more comprehensively than routine clinical methods. In this paper, we present a spline-based method for reconstructing the normal and diseased carotid artery bifurcation from images acquired using a freehand 3-D ultrasound system. The vessel wall (intima-media interface) and lumen surfaces are represented by a geometric model defined using smoothing splines. Using this coupled wall-lumen model, we demonstrate how plaque may be analyzed automatically to provide a comprehensive set of quantitative measures of size and shape, including established clinical measures, such as degree of (diameter) stenosis. The geometric accuracy of 3-D ultrasound reconstruction is assessed using pulsatile phantoms of the carotid bifurcation, and we conclude by demonstrating the in vivo application of the algorithms outlined to 3-D ultrasound scans from a series of patient carotid arteries. 相似文献

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) flow simulation techniques have the potential to enhance understanding of how haemodynamic factors are involved in atherosclerosis. Recently, three-dimensional ultrasound has emerged as an alternative to other three-dimensional imaging techniques, such as magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). The method can be used to generate accurate vascular geometry suitable for CFD simulations and can be coupled with Doppler ultrasound to provide physiologically realistic flow boundary conditions. However, there are various ways to utilize the flow data acquired, possibly leading to different results regarding both flow and wall shear stress patterns. A disadvantage of three-dimensional ultrasound for imaging the carotid bifurcation has been established as being the scanning limitation of the jawbone position. This may make artificial extensions of the internal and/or external carotid arteries necessary, which in turn may influence the predicted flow patterns. Flow simulations were carried out for three outflow calculation schemes as well as four geometries with different extensions to the carotid daughter vessels. It was found that variation of flow patterns was more strongly influenced by the outflow conditions than by the extensions of the daughter vessels. Consequently, it is recommended that for future CFD simulations of carotid flow using three-dimensional ultrasound data, the outflow boundary conditions should rely on the most accurate measurement available, and flow data recorded in the common and internal carotid are considered more reliable than data from the external carotid. Even though the extended lengths of the daughter vessels have insignificant effects on the predicted haemodynamic parameters, it would be a safer option to extend the internal carotid by approximately three times the diameter of the common carotid artery. 相似文献

The acrosome reaction is a key event in fertilization. Current models for induction of the acrosome reaction incorporate a necessary influx of Ca(2+), which is mediated by agonist-induced gating of ion channels in the sperm plasma membrane. The difficulty of applying electrophysiological techniques to spermatozoa has severely hampered studies on the expression of functional ion channels in these cells. However, during the last few years, a combination of molecular and physiological techniques (applied to immature spermatogenic cells) has elucidated both the expression of Ca(2+) channels in male germ cells and their role in induction of the acrosome reaction. It now appears that a range of voltage-operated Ca(2+) channels, similar to those that occur in somatic cells, is expressed in spermatozoa. Male rodent germ cells express a low-voltage activated (T-type) channel that is regulated by membrane potential and provides the primary Ca(2+) influx mechanism in zona pellucida-stimulated spermatozoa. In human spermatozoa, similar channels are apparently expressed, but their function in induction of the acrosome reaction has yet to be established. A range of other, high voltage-activated channels also appear to be present in rodent and human spermatozoa, but their roles are not yet known. In this review, the structure and characteristics of voltage-operated Ca(2+) channels are outlined and the evidence for their expression and function in male germ cells is assembled and discussed. 相似文献

The freeze–thaw gelation of hen's egg yolk low density lipoprotein (l.d.l.) has been examined by viscometry, agarose gel filtration, electron spin resonance spectroscopy, electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The data indicate that the core lipids, the hydrocarbon chains of interfacial lipids of l.d.l. and the sulphydryl, imino, amino and tyrosine groups in the side chains of l.d.l. peptides are not directly involved in the gelation mechanisms. The gelation is caused by non-specific aggregation due to cross-linking of peptides and/or phospholipid polar head groups of adjacent l.d.l. particles. During freezing, interparticle contacts are formed and strengthened as transformation of solvent water into ice increases the concentration of the particles. Salt and sugar additives inhibit large increases in concentrations of l.d.l. during freezing and prevent gelation by helping to increase solvation of interfacial regions of the l.d.l. particles. Agents that induce large viscosity increases in the l.d.l. sols before freezing may act by producing a local conformational change in l.d.l. protein and/or disrupting lipid–protein bonds. 相似文献

A cDNA encoding a cysteine proteinase inhibitor was isolated from a cDNA library prepared from developing seeds of an insect-resistant line of cowpea. The sequence of the encoded protein was homologous with those of other plant cysteine endoproteinase inhibitors, and with Type 2 cystatins from animals. Southern blot analyses indicated that small gene families were present in both resistant and susceptible lines of cowpea, while northern blot analyses showed similar levels of expression. It is concluded that the levels of expression of the inhibitor do not account for the differences in insect resistance of the two lines. 相似文献

The association between vascular wall shear stress (WSS) and the local development of atherosclerotic plaque makes estimation of in vivo WSS of considerable interest. Three-dimensional ultrasound (3DUS) combined with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) provides a potentially valuable tool for acquiring subject-specific WSS, but the interoperator and intraoperator variability associated with WSS calculations using this method is not known. Here, the accuracy, reproducibility and operator dependence of 3DUS-based computational fluid dynamics were examined through a phantom and in vivo studies. A carotid phantom was scanned and reconstructed by two operators. In the in vivo study, four operators scanned a healthy subject a total of 11 times, and their scan data were processed by three individuals. The study showed that with some basic training, operators could acquire accurate carotid geometry for flow reconstructions. The variability of measured cross-sectional area and predicted shear stress was 8.17% and 0.193 N/m/sup 2/ respectively for the in vivo study. It was shown that the variability of the examined parameters was more dependent on the scan operators than the image processing operator. The range of variability of geometrical and flow parameters reported here can be used as a reference for future in vivo studies using the 3DUS-based CFD approach. 相似文献
