Nonlinear superposition in saturation recording of disk media

The magnetic readback signal is generally assumed to be made up of linearly superposed single transition responses. As the transition spacing is reduced, this property is seen not to hold, With particulate disks, we find the head signal can be reconstructed as a linear superposition of variably spaced individual transitions, while with cobalt alloy film disks, both the spacing and the amplitude of individual transitions vary as a function of the data. This behavior is interpreted by a self consistent 2D recording model, linear superposition improves dramatically with lowM_{r}tdisk media.     

Discriminative Stimulus, Reinforcing, Physical Dependence, and Antinociceptive Effects of Oxycodone in Mice, Rats, and Rhesus Monkeys.

Despite oxycodone's (4,5-epoxy-14-hydroxy-3-methoxy-17-methylmorphinan-6-one) history of clinical use and the attention it has received as a drug of abuse, few reports have documented its pharmacology's relevance to its abuse or its mechanism of action. The purposes of the present study were to further characterize the analgesic effects of oxycodone, its mechanism of action, and its effects in terms of its relevance to its abuse liability. The results indicate that oxycodone had potent antinociceptive effects in the mouse paraphenylquinone writhing, hot-plate, and tail-flick assays, in which it appeared to be acting as a μ-opioid receptor agonist. It generalized to the heroin discriminative stimulus and served as a positive reinforcer in rats and completely suppressed withdrawal signs in morphinedependent rhesus monkeys. These results suggest that the analgesic and abuse liability effects of oxycodone are likely mediated through μ-opioid receptors and provide the first laboratory report of its discriminative stimulus, reinforcing, and morphine cross-dependency effects. Comment on the compressibility of Cs determined from pressure dependence of Fermi surface cross sections

We report measurements of the angular dependence of the pressure derivatives of cross-sectional areas of the Fermi surface of Cs which vary from 2.67% kbar ^–1 for the minimum area cross section to 3.30% kbar ^–1 forH[[111]. This anisotropy invalidates the assumption of free-electron behavior in Cs used by Glinski and Templeton to arrive at a compressibility value for Cs which differed by –14% from that determined from the piston-cylinder measurements of Andersonet al. and by –8% from the ultrasonic result of Kollarits and Trivisonno. While a compressibility derived from our results is admittedly model dependent, we feel there is essentially no inconsistency between our compressibility and those derived by more conventional means.This work was supported by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.     

Performance of the 12,000 m3/d seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant at Jeddah,Saudi Arabia January 1979 through January 1981

The operation and maintenance of the world's largest seawater reverse osmosis plant has been largely consistent with expectations. The maintenance down time has been minimized by prompt identification, evaluation and correction of problems.Despite unanticipated mechanical and corrosion problems, the plant has shown a high on-line factor demonstrating the durability and flexibility of spiral-wound elements.In summary, the Jeddah installation has demonstrated that the spiral element can and will function well under varied and adverse circumstances, and that RO is a viable process for seawater desalination with excellent prospects for the future.     

Computer vision for interactive computer graphics

Vision can be a powerful interface device for computers because of its potential for sensing body position, head orientation, direction of gaze, pointing commands, and gestures. Such unencumbered interaction can make computers easier to use. We describe vision algorithms for interactive graphics and present vision-controlled graphics applications using these algorithms. Some applications employ an artificial retina chip for image detection or preprocessing     

Interaction using a handheld projector

Handheld projection lets users create opportunistic displays on any suitable nearby surface. This projection method is a practical and useful addition to mobile computing. Incorporating a projector into a handheld device raises the issue of how to interact with a projection. The focus of the article is interactive projection: a technique for moving a cursor across a projection, allowing all the familiar mouse interactions from the desktop to be transposed to a handheld projector, and requiring only natural, one-handed pointing motion by the user.
