The Deliberative Politics of the Consultative Layer: Participation Hopes and Communication as Design Values of Civic Tech Founders

Drawing from communication as design and the spirit of technology, this study investigated the political values embedded in consultative layer companies, with particular attention to the influence of normative deliberative democratic ideals in tech design. Interviews with the founders of consultative layer tech startups explored (a) founders' visions for their technologies and how they were incorporated, (b) the imagined user groups for these technologies, and (c) expected broader outcomes as a result of using their platforms. Six interrelated themes emerged in the analysis that illuminate ideologies, ideals, and pragmatic considerations embedded in the consultative layer, raising new theoretical and practical questions about the role of communication in understanding this emerging industry and its reimagining of government in the online space.     

Relationship of client preferences and counselor's physical disability.

Investigated the effects on a client of a counselor's obvious physical disability. In a counseling analog, 24 able-bodied and 24 physically handicapped male undergraduates were shown 3 slides-a counselor in a wheelchair, a counselor with crutches, and a counselor with no apparent physical disability. Ss were asked to respond to a series of hypothetical counseling situations. Results suggest that both able-bodied and disabled Ss preferred disabled counselors for discussing personal problems. Able-bodied Ss who appeared most maladjusted tended to reject the disabled counselor. Implications for counselor selection and job assignment are discussed. Pyrrolysine Amber Stop-Codon Suppression: Development and Applications

The pyrrolysine tRNA synthetase-tRNA pair is probably one of the most promiscuous tRNA–synthetase pairs found in nature, capable of genetically encoding a plethora of noncanonical amino acids through stop codon reassignment. Proteins containing reactive handles, post-translational modification mimics or both can be produced in practical quantities, allowing inter alia the probing of biological pathways, generating antibody–drug conjugates and enhancing protein function. This Minireview summarises the development of pyrrolysine amber stop-codon suppression, presents some of the considerations required to utilise this technique to its greatest potential, and showcases the creative ways in which this technique has led to a better understanding of biological systems.

Three isomeric conjugated triene aldehydes,(10E,12E,14Z)-10, 12-14-hexadecatrienal (IX), (10E,12Z,14E)-10,12,14-hexadecatrienal (XX), and (10E,12E,14E)-10,12,14-hexadecatrienal (X), two of which are components of theManduca sexta (L.) sex pheromone, have been stereoselectively synthesized and spectroscopically characterized.This article reports the results of research only. Calculation of communication-network response to arbitrary transients

The use of a digital computer permits the replacement of analytic-function waveforms by lists of equi-interval sample values, while a simple and stable finite-difference routine, which does not assume analyticity, accepts the circuit function in the formal s-polynomial ratio form. The passage of a completely arbitrary waveform through linear, amplitude-modulation, or angle-modulation networks is reduced to a few minutes' computation with a standard program. Nonlinearities, time delays and noise can easily be accommodated, and a special simplification is outlined for servomechanisms.
