98 elementary school teachers read vignettes depicting incidents involving (fictional) students who presented chronic behavior problems and then told how they would respond if the incidents occurred in their classrooms. Responses were coded for attributions about the students and about the Ss' roles in causing and correcting the problems. Ss attributed controllability and intentionality to students presenting teacher-owned problems but not to students presenting student-owned problems. Students presenting shared problems often were seen as able to control their behavior but not as misbehaving intentionally. The contrasting patterns of attribution seen in these 3 levels of problem ownership were associated with contrasting patterns of goals and strategies, as well. The data bear out expectations based on attributional analyses of helping behavior but raise questions about teachers' preparedness to cope with problem students. A simple empirical model is developed based on two-dimensional linearized Rayleigh-Taylor stability theory to describe the break-up of drops and bubbles in stagnant fluids. Splitting is predicted to occur if the growth of indentations on the leading edge is rapid enough relative to the rate at which the disturbance is carried around the interface to the equator. Experimental data on maximum stable sizes of drops and bubbles in viscous liquids are presented for eighteen different systems, covering a range much larger than in previous studies. Agreement between the model and experimental results is favourable.  相似文献

The microwave saturation properties of various spin-labeled lipids in reconstituted complexes of the myelin proteolipid protein with dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine have been studied both by conventional and saturation transfer electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. In the fluid phase, the conventional ESR spectra consist of a fluid and a motionally restricted (i.e., protein-associated) component, whose relative proportions can be determined by spectral subtractions and depend on the selectivity of the particular spin-labeled lipid for the protein. At 4 degrees C when the bulk lipid is in the gel phase, the integrated intensity of the saturation transfer ESR spectra displays a linear dependence on the fraction of motionally restricted lipid that is deduced from the conventional ESR spectra in the fluid phase, indicating the presence of distinct populations of free and protein-interacting lipid with no exchange between them on the saturation transfer ESR time scale in the gel phase. At 30 degrees C when the bulk lipid is in the fluid phase, the saturation transfer integral displays a nonlinear dependence on the fraction of motionally restricted lipid, consistent with exchange between the two lipid populations on the saturation transfer ESR time scale in the fluid phase. For lipid spin labels with different selectivities for the protein in complexes of fixed lipid/protein ratio, the data in the fluid phase are consistent with a constant (diffusion-controlled) on-rate for exchange at the lipid-protein interface. Values ranging between 1 and 9 x 10(6) s-1 are estimated for the intrinsic off-rates for exchange of spin-labeled stearic acid and phosphatidylcholine, respectively, at 30 degrees C. Conventional continuous wave saturation experiments lead to similar conclusions regarding the lipid exchange rates in the fluid and gel phases of the lipid/protein recombinants. The ESR saturation studies therefore demonstrate exchange on the time scale of the nitroxide spin-lattice relaxation at the lipid-protein interface of myelin proteolipid/dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine complexes in the fluid phase but not in the gel phase.  相似文献

Innovations in learning sciences and technology are opening new opportunities for designing and implementing effective learning materials that can be shared between bioengineering instructors. The successful reuse of instructional materials depends on how easy it is for an instructor to adapt the materials with a similar intent of the original author. Many resource libraries are emerging that provide a searchable database of sharable, Web-based instructional materials. The materials range from lesson plans and teaching techniques to text, video, and interactive simulation resources. These digital libraries are valuable services for teachers and students to access information and participate in a community of science, mathematics, and technology. The VaNTH (Vanderbilt University; Northwestern University; University of Texas at Austin; and Health, Science and Technology at Harvard/MIT) Engineering Research Center (ERC) is exploring a similar goal to design and test learning materials for bioengineering education and construct a technology infrastructure that supports the reuse of these materials in pedagogically appropriate ways. For VaNTH, using a consistent framework that describes the instructional intent of the materials is a critical factor in helping instructors envision how to adapt the materials to their own instruction. Therefore, VaNTH has defined a design process that capitalizes on the insight of learning sciences and best practices in engineering education to construct learning materials that follow a consistent but flexible instructional model.  相似文献

Two brush border peptidases have been isolated from the particulate fraction of the rat intestinal mucosa and purified to homogeneity as judged by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, starch gel electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing, and double immunodiffusion. For convenience, the peptidases have been designated peptidase F (fast) and S (slow) on the basis of their anodic mobilities. The isoelectric point of peptidase F was 4.76 and of peptidase S, 5.10. Both enzymes are glycoproteins. The amino acid compositions of the two peptidases are similar. The same carbohydrates are found in both enzymes, but there are differences in the molar concentrations of individual sugars. Peptidase S has greater concentrations of mannose and galactose and of hexosamines than peptidase F, while sialic acid is slightly greater in peptidase F. Carbohydrate accounted for approximately 19% and 23% of the weight of peptidases F and S, respectively. Estimates of the molecular weights of both enzymes by gel filtration gave values of 280,000. Electrophoresis of the enzymes under denaturing conditions on sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gels indicated that each enzyme is a dimer consisting of two subunits of equal molecular weight, 140,000.  相似文献

A 5-year study of graduates' performance on NCLEX-RN was conducted using data from July 1988 through February 1994. This time frame related to the "new" test plan introduced in 1988 with pass/fail results for NCLEX analysis. Using a quota sampling technique of 188 graduates, selected admission and curriculum variables and National League for Nursing (NLN) Comprehensive Achievement Test scores were studied in relationship to NCLEX-RN examination results. The strongest indicators of success were SAT verbal scores, nursing grade point average, and NLN Comprehensive Achievement Test scores. In addition, logistic regression analyses identified three nursing courses in combination with the NLN Comprehensive Achievement Test score as a strong model for prediction. Even though pass/fail data limit statistical analyses, the predictor variables were strong at P = 0.0001. These findings are consistent with prior studies.  相似文献
