ABSTRACT

In April 2006, Alliance Library System and Online Programming for All Libraries partnered to start the Second Life Library 2.0 in the online world Second Life and in August 2006 purchased an island on the Teen grid of Teen Second Life. Second Life is a virtual world, a descendant of multiplayer online games. Educational institutions have recently been drawn into Second Life's robust economy and vibrant cultural life. The Second Life Library 2.0 works with librarians from around the world and with other educational partners such as TechSoup, WorldBridges, and the New Media Consortium. Second Life Library 2.0 provides “traditional” library services such as ready reference, book discussions, and search assistance, but, at heart, it explores what it means to be a virtual library in a virtual world.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare the effects of pH on the growth kinetics of Listeria monocytogenes Scott A in static and agitated broths stored at 4 and 10 degrees C with and without a combination of 1.85% potassium lactate (PL) and 0.13% sodium diacetate (SDA) (3.3% of a 60% commercial solution, PURASAL P Opti.Form 4). The pH of brain heart infusion broth without (control) or with 1.85% PL + 0.13% SDA was adjusted to 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, and 7.5. L. monocytogenes Scott A was inoculated (at 10(2) CFU/ml) into pH-adjusted broth, which was stored at 4 or 10 degrees C with or without agitation. At pH 5.5, a listeriostatic effect was observed for the broth containing 1.85% PL + 0.13% SDA at 4 and 10 degrees C both with and without agitation. At pH 6.0, 1.85% PL + 0.13% SDA fully controlled the growth of L. monocytogenes Scott A in static broth at 4 degrees C for up to 20 days and significantly slowed the growth of the pathogen in agitated broth. At 10 degrees C, the growth of L. monocytogenes Scott A was significantly reduced by 1.85% PL + 0.13% SDA in agitated and unagitated broths. At pH 6.5, 1.85% PL + 0.13% SDA significantly suppressed the growth of L. monocytogenes Scott A at both 4 degrees C (P < 0.001) and 10 degrees C (P < 0.01). At pH 7.5, 1.85% PL + 0.13% SDA had a limited effect on the growth of L. monocytogenes Scott A in broth stored at 4 and 10 degrees C. At 4 degrees C, agitation decreased the lag time and increased the growth rate of L. monocytogenes Scott A at all tested pHs. A similar but less obvious trend was observed for broths stored at 10 degrees C. These results indicate that lactate-diacetate combinations effectively acted with low pH and temperature to inhibit the growth of L. monocytogenes Scott A.  相似文献

Group members often take more responsibility for the group's outcomes than others give to them. Extending evidence that egocentrism can be muted when group members are individuated (the "unpacking effect"), the authors predicted that members of open groups would be less egocentric than members of closed groups. In open groups, the possibility of membership fluctuation reduces collectiveness, breaking the group into individuals, which in turn lessens egocentrism. The authors tested these predictions in a study of groups of students working on a task relevant to their academic success. Members claimed more personal responsibility when they worked in closed groups relative to open groups (egocentrism), and lack of cohesion mediated the open- versus closed-group link to responsibility allocations. Moreover, members of open groups did not take more responsibility after a success than a failure, whereas those in closed, successful groups claimed more credit than members of failure groups (self-serving bias). The discussion suggests that open groups, although often thought to create conflict as members compete, may contribute to a reduction in both egocentrism and self-serving responsibility allocations. Selective inhibition of the neuronal isoform of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) compared to the endothelial and inducible isoforms may be required for treatment of neurological disorders caused by excessive production of nitric oxide. Recently, we described N-(3-(aminomethyl)benzyl)acetamidine (13) as a slow, tight-binding inhibitor, highly selective for human inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Removal of a single methylene bridge between the amidine nitrogen and phenyl ring to give N-(3-(aminomethyl)phenyl)acetamidine (14) dramatically altered the selectivity to give a neuronal selective nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) inhibitor. Part of this large shift in selectivity was due to 14 being a rapidly reversible inhibitor of iNOS in contrast to the essentially irreversible inhibition of iNOS observed with 13. Structure-activity studies revealed that a basic amine functionality tethered to an aromatic ring and a sterically compact amidine are key pharmacophores for this class of NOS inhibitors. Maximal nNOS inhibition potency was achieved with N-(3-(aminomethyl)phenyl)-2-furanylamidine (77) (Ki-nNOS = 0.006 microM; Ki-eNOS = 0.35 microM; Ki-iNOS = 0.16 microM). Finally, alpha-fluoro-N-(3-(aminomethyl)phenyl)acetamidine (74) (Ki-nNOS = 0. 011 microM; Ki-eNOS = 1.1 microM; Ki-iNOS = 0.48 microM) had excellent brain penetration and inhibited nNOS in a rat brain slice assay as well as in the rat brain (cerebellum) in vivo. Thus, N-phenylamidines should be useful in validating the role of nNOS in neurological disorders.  相似文献

5-Fluoroanthranilic acid (FAA)-resistant mutants were selected in homothallic diploids of three Saccharomyces species, taking care to isolate mutants of independent origin. Mutations were assigned to complementation groups by interspecific complementation with S. cerevisiae tester strains. In all three species, trp3, trp4 and trp5 mutants were recovered. trp1 mutants were also recovered if the selection was imposed on a haploid strain. Thus, FAA selection may be more generally applicable than was previously described.  相似文献

A technique is presented for registering polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data to other aircraft and spaceborne data sets. Resampling is done on the full Stokes matrix, allowing full polarization synthesis on the coregistered data set. Analysis of data acquired over Pisgah Crater in the Mojave Desert, CA, as part of the Mojave Field Experiment shows that the resampling does not seriously affect the pedestal heights of polarization signatures or estimates of RMS heights for smooth to moderately rough surfaces  相似文献

Titanium Interlayer Mediated Epitaxy (TIME) has been shown to promote the formation of epitaxial CoSi2 on Si (100). Similarities between Si and Si1−xGex alloys have motivated a study of whether the TIME process could be successful in forming epitaxial CoSi2 on Si1−xGex. Titanium layers of varying thickness were deposited as interlayers between a Co layer and c-Si/Si0.8Ge0.2 grown epitaxially onto Si (100) to investigate their role in the formation of epitaxial CoSi2 on Si1−xGex alloys. The effect of Ti interlayer thickness on the orientation of CoSi2 to the Si1−xGex substrate, and the conditions under which a polycrystalline CoSi2 film has been formed have been studied. It was found that Ti was beneficial in promoting epitaxy to the substrate in all cases. The experimental results indicate that with a Ti interlayer thickness of ∼ 50 Å, the formation of epitaxial CoSi2 adjacent to the substrate was achieved, and pinhole formation was minimized. It was also observed that for increased interlayer thickness, Ti reacted with Si to form a titanium silicide.  相似文献
