Introduction.
Scientific discovery and the technological innovations that result from them often appear to provide a model for behavioral science theory, especially of its physiological aspects. Under the editorship of Christopher Ferguson, this issue, titled “Video Games,” continues the tradition of the Review of General Psychology’s offering one issue each volume of papers concentrated on a single topic. To those readers interested in the educational value of computer games, this issue offers rich findings. To those interested in how commercial technology reflects our models of the mind, the issue should provide an equally rich, contemporary, example. To extend a study conducted by E. M. Brannon and H. S. Terrace (1998, 2000), the authors trained 1 hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas) and 1 squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) to respond to stimuli representing the numerosities 1-4 in ascending order. When tested with novel stimuli of the same numerosities, both subjects' performance appeared to be based on the numerical attributes of stimuli. Subjects were then tested on their ability to order pairs of numerosities derived from the values 1-9. Both subjects successfully ordered pairs that included the untrained numerosities 5-9 regardless of the total surface area of numerosities. Accuracy and latency of responding also showed numerical distance and magnitude effects. Numerosity was a salient cue to both subjects, suggesting that these 2 families of primates perceive ordinal relations. The outcome shows that cognitive studies of this type can be effectively conducted with socially housed animals. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Preferences for regions of the face were examined in four members of a hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas) group. Subjects were presented a series of photographic slides displaying various facial regions and combinations of regions of the dominant male in the group with the use of the method of paired comparison. An apparatus consisting of a two-slide screen/two-push-button arrangement permitted the baboons to control slide selection and viewing duration. Both duration and frequency of slide activation were recorded. Correlations of viewing durations among all subjects were significant (p?≤?.05). The eye region alone and in combination with other regions received significantly more attention than did all other regions or combinations. Frequency measures were not significant. The results support findings obtained with rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) and suggest that the eye region may provide a primate with an important source of information, possibly information about intent. Editorial.
This editorial introduces the current issue of Review of General Psychology. The topic for Volume 11 is "From the brain to human culture: Intersections between the humanities, cognitive science, and neuroscience." Readers of the journal will find their appreciation of psychology's reach enriched by the variety of uses to which contemporary psychology is enhancing and grasping the previously obscure relationship between behavioral aspects of neurology to the benefit of the humanities and all human knowledge. This article serves as a brief introduction to this special issue of the Review of General Psychology. The editor of this Special Issue and the authors presented put forth ideas and data on how we may better understand the people who make and interpret science. They hope that their work will serve to establish the "psychology of science" as a recognizable and useful field of study. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
