The effects of lead exposure on learning in a multiple repeated acquisition and performance schedule
This study sought to determine the selectivity of Pb-induced changes in learning, as distinct from non-specific or performance effects, and to explore the nature of the underlying error patterns contributing to any learning deficits. To accomplish this, rats were chronically exposed to 0, 50, or 250 ppm Pb acetate in drinking water from weaning and trained on a multiple repeated acquisition (RA) and performance (P) schedule beginning at 55 days of age. The RA component required the rat to learn a new 3-member sequence of responses during each experimental session (Center Right Left, RLC, CLR, RCL, and LRC), while the correct sequence of responses for the P component was constant across sessions (LCR). Significant decrements in accuracy on the RA component but not on the P component were found in Pb-exposed groups compared to control, effects that could not be attributed to differential rates of responding. Analyses of error patterns revealed that the effects of Pb exposure on RA accuracy levels derived from two sources. The first consisted of a perseveration of P-like sequence responding (LCR) even during the RA component. Secondly, Pb exposure increased perseverative responding on a single lever, even though the schedule itself never directly reinforced such repetitive responding. The increase in frequency of these two types of perseverative behavior was incompatible with acquisition of non P-like sequences during the RA component. Adding a 5 sec tone to the light stimuli signalling the transition between RA and P components of the multiple schedule failed to attenuate these effects of Pb, suggesting that deficits in stimulus control were not the sole behavioral mechanism of these impairments. Examination of individual data revealed the presence of both 'learners' and 'non-learners' in each group, with the prevalence of the latter being suggestively higher in Pb-exposed groups than in controls. This paper presents 5 patients with repeated recurrence of osteosarcoma (RROS). The primary focus of 3 patients were in the distal portion of femur, and 2 patients were in the proximal portion of tibia. Three patients, whose chest X ray film were negative, were treated by amputation and chemotherapy. Two patients had isolated metastatic focus 1.5 cm in diameter in lung, were treated by amputation after 1 week of chemotherapy and then treated by lobectomy after 2 weeks of chemotherapy. After operation, the chemotherapy was carried out for 3 courses of treatment. The roentgenogram of chest and affected limb were taken once every two months. There were metastatic focuses found in the lung of 1 patient and in the distal portion of femur of 2 patients. One patient was operated on for 4 times. One of the most frequently cited reasons for conducting a meta-analysis is the increase in statistical power that it affords a reviewer. This article demonstrates that fixed-effects meta-analysis increases statistical power by reducing the standard error of the weighted average effect size (T?.) and, in so doing, shrinks the confidence interval around T?.. Small confidence intervals make it more likely for reviewers to detect nonzero population effects, thereby increasing statistical power. Smaller confidence intervals also represent increased precision of the estimated population effect size. Computational examples are provided for 3 effect-size indices: d (standardized mean difference), Pearson's r, and odds ratios. Random-effects meta-analyses also may show increased statistical power and a smaller standard error of the weighted average effect size. Differential emotions theory (DET) proposes that infant facial expressions of emotions are differentiated. To test this hypothesis, the authors examined infant facial expressions longitudinally at 2, 4, and 6 mo of age during face-to-face play and a "still-face" interaction with their mothers. Infant expressions were coded using the Maximally Discriminative Facial Movement Coding System (Max). Consistent with DET, discrete positive expressions occurred more of the time and were of longer duration than blended expressions of positive affect. Contrary to DET, at no age did the proportions or durations of discrete and blended negative expressions differ, and they showed different patterns of developmental change. Artificial illumination is an important factor in the management of layers. In this study, a new monochromatic light system was developed for egg layers. Prelaying pullets (Lohmann) were marked and housed in nine light and temperature control rooms (15 battery cages, 3 hens per cage; n = 45), divided into three light treatments: 0.1 and 0.01 W/m2 light intensity using light emitting diode (LED) lamps and 0.1 W/m2 using mini-fluorescent bulbs (PL) (control). In each of the LED rooms, three wavelengths were tested: 560 (n = 9), 660 (n = 9), 880 (n = 6), and 660 intermitted lighting (15 min light 45 min dark, 660IN) (n = 9). Birds were exposed to 12 h light and 12 h of darkness using PL lamps. At 21 wk of age, the light period was increased to 12.75 h by using 5.5 h of LED lamps and 7.25 of PL light source for Groups 1 and 2, the third group received 12.75 h of PL light. Until 28 wk of age, light hours increased by 0.5 h/w using LED light for Groups 1 and 2 and PL source for the third group, reaching 16 h of light at 28 wk of age. Egg production and feed consumption were recorded daily; egg components were recorded weekly for 10 mo. A significant reduction in egg production was observed in all 880nm groups; no differences in egg production and quality were found in the other groups. Feed consumption was significantly lower by 7% in all 0.01 W/m2 groups. We suggest that an important reduction in rearing costs of laying hens may be obtained by using this system. 相似文献

The morbidity, mortality and health care costs associated with congestive heart failure make prevention a more attractive public health strategy than treatment. Aggressive management of etiologic factors, including hypertension, coronary artery disease, valvular disease and excessive alcohol intake, can prevent the left ventricular remodeling and dysfunction that lead to heart failure. Early intervention with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors in patients with chronic left ventricular dysfunction can prevent, as well as treat, the syndrome. Several intervention strategies in patients with acute myocardial infarction can slow or prevent the left ventricular remodeling process that antedates congestive heart failure. High-field designs could reduce the cost and complexity of tokamak reactors. Moreover, the certainty of achieving required plasma performance could be increased. OBJECTIVE: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a technology that may allow some patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) to integrate standing and upright mobility with wheelchair mobility. The purpose of this study was to document the patterns of home and community use of a FES system for standing and mobility. DESIGN: A telephone questionnaire was administered every 1 to 4 weeks for a minimum of 1 year. An interview was given at the end of the study to probe the motivators and barriers to home use. SETTING: Training for use of the FES system was performed in an inpatient pediatric rehabilitation setting. Data collection began after the subjects were discharged to home. PARTICIPANTS: Five adolescents with complete, thoracic-level SCI. INTERVENTION: Subjects participated in a program of FES exercise followed by training in basic mobility skills such as standing transfers, maneuvering, level ambulation, one-handed and reaching activities, and stair ascent/descent. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The frequency with which the FES system was used at home and the activities for which it was utilized were documented. Motivators and barriers to FES home use were examined. RESULTS: Subjects donned the FES system on the average once every 3 to 4 days. Between 51% and 84% of the times donned, the system was used for exercise. The remaining times it was used for standing activities, most commonly reaching, one-handed tasks, and standing for exercise. "Motivators" included being able to do things that would otherwise be difficult, perceiving a healthful benefit or a sense of well-being from standing and exercise, and feeling an obligation to stand as a participant in a research study. It is important to understand the factors underlying grade-crossing crashes and to examine potential solutions. We have installed a camera in front of a locomotive to examine grade-crossing accidents (or near accidents). We present a computer vision system that automatically extracts possible near-accident scenes by detecting the activity of vehicles crossing in front of the train after signals are ignited. We present a fast algorithm to detect moving objects recorded by a moving camera with minimal computation. The moving object is detected by: 1) estimating the ego motion of the camera and 2) detecting and tracking feature points whose motion is inconsistent with the camera motion. We introduce a pseudoreal-time ego-motion (camera-motion) estimation method with a robust optimization algorithm. We present experiments on ego-motion estimation and moving-object detection. Our algorithm works in pseudoreal-time and we expect that our algorithm can be applied to real-time applications such as collision warning in the near future, with the development of hardware technology. 相似文献

The energy demand response of the residential and commercial sectors to fuel price changes is of increasing importance to public policy makers. In this paper, the demands for energy in both sectors are examined separately using a refined data base. For each sector, a multinomial logit formulation is utilized, along with an aggregate demand equation to determine analytically short- and long-run fuel price elasticities of demand for the major fuels consumed. It is found that increases in energy prices have a greater effect on energy demand in the commercial sector. Furthermore, in both sectors, raising electricity prices has a greater effect for conserving energy (both end-use and primary) than do equal price rises for natural gas or heating oils. 相似文献
