The present study was carried out to investigate the biochemical and morphological changes in the liver after ligation of the hepatic artery (HA) in the presence and in the absence of extrahepatic cholestasis (EHC). The study was conducted on 100 rats divided into four groups of 25 animals each: group 1, sham operation; group 2, hepatic artery ligation (HAL); group 3, bile duct ligation (BDL); and group 4, HAL plus BDL. All animals were sacrificed 7 days after surgery when total bilirubin and fractions, alkaline phosphatase (AP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were measured in serum and on the inner hepatocyte mitochondrial membrane (IHMM); the incidence of necrosis and the volume fractions of vessels, bile ducts and hepatocytes in the liver were also determined. HAL reduces the relative volumes of bile ducts, with no changes in levels of bilirubin and fractions, AP, ALT, AST and IHMM, but HAL associated with EHC reduces duct proliferation and the liver becomes more vulnerable to necrosis. In conclusion, the normal liver depends on HA flow and this dependence is more evident in the presence of EHC.  相似文献

The effect of fog on eyewear was evaluated by having individuals perform a target detection task in environments that typically cause eyewear to fog while wearing either eyewear that had been treated with anti-fog coating, eyewear not treated, or no eyewear. Detection was higher with eyewear that had been treated with anti-fog coating compared to uncoated lenses and no difference was observed between wearing coated eyewear and wearing no eyewear. The study concluded that fogging of lenses has a significant effect on visual detection and the use of anti-fog coating is relatively effective. However, in environments where prolonged fogging occurs water droplets form on anti-fog coated lenses which disrupts visual performance in a manner similar to the fog it is trying to prevent. It is recommended that anti-fog coating be considered when purchasing protective eyewear, and a bench test be developed to assess the coatings applied to eyewear.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether for patients with incurable cancer comprehensive home care programmes are more effective than standard care in maintaining the patients' quality of life and reducing their "readmission time" (percentage of days spent in hospital from start of care till death). DESIGN: Systematic review. METHODS: A computer aided search was conducted using the databases of Medline, Embase, CancerLit, and PsychLit. The search for studies and the assessment of the methodological quality of the relevant studies were performed by two investigators, blinded from each other. Prospective, controlled studies investigating the effects of a home care intervention programme on patients' quality of life or on readmission time were included in the analyses. RESULTS: Only 9 prospective controlled studies were found; eight were performed in the United States and 1 in the United Kingdom. Their methodological quality was judged to be moderate (median rating 62 on a 100 point scale). None of the studies showed a negative influence of home care interventions on quality of life. A significantly positive influence on the outcome measures was seen in 2 out of the 5 studies measuring patients' satisfaction with care, in 3/7 studies measuring physical dimensions of quality of life, in 1/6 studies measuring psychosocial dimensions, and in 2/5 studies measuring readmission time. The incorporation of team members' visits to patients at home or regular multidisciplinary team meetings into the intervention programme seemed to be related to positive results. CONCLUSIONS: The effectiveness of comprehensive home care programmes remains unclear. Given the enormity of the problems faced by society in caring for patients with terminal cancer, further research is urgently needed.  相似文献

Used the taste reactivity (TR) test, a direct measure of the hedonic properties of a tastant, to assess in Sprague-Dawley rats the ability of morphine (an opiate agonist) and naltrexone (an opiate antagonist) to modify the palatability of a bitter quinine solution and a sweet sucrose solution. Morphine reduced the aversive hedonic properties of both novel and familiar quinine solution (0.05% and 0.1%) but did not modify the palatability of 20% sucrose solution. Naltrexone reduced the positive hedonic properties of sucrose solution (2% and 20%) but did not modify the palatability of 0.05% quinine solution. The pattern of results suggests that the modification of feeding produced by opiate agonists and antagonists may be mediated by a hedonic shift in the palatability of the tastant. To investigate the locus of signal probability effects and the influence of stimulus quality on this locus, the authors manipulated probability in Task 2 of a psychological refractory period (PRP) paradigm. The effect was additive with stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) when the target was not masked but underadditive with decreasing SOA when the target was masked. Even with masking, however, a range of probabilities had effects additive with SOA. The results suggest loci of stimulus probability before the PRP bottleneck as well as at or after the bottleneck. A second issue addressed was the locus of interference in the attentional blink (AB). The AB was larger when the probability of the first of 2 targets was lower. The pharmacological properties of non-adrenergic non-cholinergic (NANC) inhibitory neurotransmission were investigated in the rabbit choledocho-duodenal junction (CDJ), using the microelectrode and tension recording methods. L-NAME (10(-4) M) and apamin (5 X 10 (-6) M) suppressed NANC relaxation evoked by electrical field stimulation (EFS) in the presence of atropine and guanethidine (each 10(-6) M) to a similar extent (to about 40% of the initial control). However, combined application of L-NAME (10(-4) M) and apamin (5 X 10(-6) M) did not abolish it. EFS also evoked biphasic inhibitory junction potentials (IJPs) consisting of initial fast and slow sustained components in the presence of atropine and guanethidine (each 10(-6) M). Apamin (5 X 10(-8)-5 X 10(-6) M) dose-dependently suppressed the initial fast component by about 70%. In contrast, L-NAME (10(-4) M) did not affect either the amplitude of IJP or the resting membrane potential. PACAP-38 (> 10(-8) M) dose-dependently hyperpolarized the smooth muscle membrane of rabbit CDJ followed by a slow repolarization to the original level. After pretreatment with apamin (5 X 10(-7) M), PACAP-38 (10(-6) M) failed to evoke membrane hyperpolarization. During repolarization in the continued presence of PACAP-38, the amplitude of initial fast component of IJP was reduced to about 40-60% of control value, while that of the slow one was unaffected. A similar suppression of initial fast component of IJP (about 40% of the control value) also occurred after application of PACAP (6-38), a PACAP antagonist, or prolonged treatment with monoclonal antibodies to PACAP-27 or PACAP-38. Furthermore, the substantial part of residual fast IJP in the presence of PACAP (6-38) was suppressed by desensitization to alpha,beta-methylene ATP (10(-3) M). These results indicate that in rabbit CDJ NANC relaxation consists mainly of apamin- and L-NAME-sensitive components, which occur in a membrane potential dependent (through membrane hyperpolarization) and independent fashion, respectively. It has further been suggested that PACAP, together with a smaller contribution of ATP, may be involved as the principal apamin-sensitive transmitter in NANC relaxation of this muscle.  相似文献
