Ireland is one of a very small number of countries in the world which does not charge for domestic drinking water supply. Recent developments have indicated that the reintroduction of domestic charges in Ireland is being planned. Ireland has a daily average water usage per person of around 150 litres and an increasing demand for clean water reserves and talks of imminent water metering and charges. This paper investigates the current status of water resources and water supply in Ireland, and assesses the technical, economic and political challenges involved with the reintroduction of domestic water charges accompanied by the implementation of a domestic metering programme. The study highlights the need for a system of water charging and metering in Ireland to ensure more careful management of water resources, to promote more sustainable use of water, and to provide a more stable revenue stream for local authorities.  相似文献

Illuminance data were collected from 18 UK dwellings during 1-week periods in spring 2007, to establish when luminaires were used and to calculate electricity consumption for lighting. Householders were also interviewed about lighting use and choices. The potential for reducing lighting electricity consumption by replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) is assessed. Mean weekly electricity consumption for lighting was 3.756 kW h and mean proportion of total electricity consumption used for lighting was 6.55%. It is notable, however, that participants generally expressed high levels of environmental awareness and that electricity consumption figures for less environmentally-aware households may differ. On average, households could have reduced lighting electricity consumption by 50.9% if all incandescent bulbs were replaced with CFLs. Even householders making extensive use of efficient lighting technologies expressed concerns about these technologies’ performance, but seemed willing to tolerate perceived shortcomings for environmental reasons. However, the study raises questions about whether people without strong environmental motivations can be convinced that efficient lighting technologies will meet their needs. It also raises questions about the effectiveness of policies phasing out general lighting service incandescent bulbs, as there is a risk that householders may switch to tungsten halogen bulbs rather than low-energy options.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Evaluation of posteroanterior (PA) movement in the spine is commonly used in the clinic, but little is known about the mechanisms involved. The purposes of this study were to examine variations in PA stiffness along the thoracolumbar spine and to investigate possible factors that might determine the pattern of stiffness. SUBJECTS: Twenty-one pain-free volunteers (10 male, 11 female), aged 18 to 41 years (mean age=26.6, SD=7.5), participated. METHODS: Posteroanterior stiffness was measured at 5 locations (L4, L1, T10, T7, T4), together with various subject characteristics. RESULTS: Mean PA stiffness varied among locations, with the greatest stiffness at L4 (13.3 N/mm) and the lowest stiffness at L1 (10.4 N/mm). A relatively small, but important, proportion (22% or less) of the variance in stiffness data at some vertebral levels was accounted for by the variables describing subject characteristics. CONCLUSION AND DISCUSSION: Posteroanterior stiffness varies along the spine in a manner consistent with the nature of support for the spine. The observed pattern of variation of PA stiffness along the spine appears to be influenced by some factors other than those relating to the spine.  相似文献

Increasing train speeds combined with the predicted reduction in the weight of new trains ensure that the effect of crosswinds on train stability is of continued interest to the rail industry. Changes in the approaching wind velocity can in turn lead to changes in both the lift and side force on a vehicle. Calculations of the wind induced force can either be undertaken in the frequency domain with knowledge of aerodynamic admittance characteristics or in the time domain using aerodynamic weighting functions. This paper investigates the applicability of developing a universal aerodynamic admittance function and a corresponding analytical weighting function for a variety of train types based on a range of experimental data. It is suggested that only two variables are required to parameterise both the admittance and weighting functions. It is also argued that for certain train types one of these variables can be considered as a constant across a wide range of yaw angles.  相似文献

Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2D (LGMD 2D) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the alpha-sarcoglycan gene. To determine how alpha-sarcoglycan deficiency leads to muscle fiber degeneration, we generated and analyzed alpha-sarcoglycan- deficient mice. Sgca-null mice developed progressive muscular dystrophy and, in contrast to other animal models for muscular dystrophy, showed ongoing muscle necrosis with age, a hallmark of the human disease. Sgca-null mice also revealed loss of sarcolemmal integrity, elevated serum levels of muscle enzymes, increased muscle masses, and changes in the generation of absolute force. Molecular analysis of Sgca-null mice demonstrated that the absence of alpha-sarcoglycan resulted in the complete loss of the sarcoglycan complex, sarcospan, and a disruption of alpha-dystroglycan association with membranes. In contrast, no change in the expression of epsilon-sarcoglycan (alpha-sarcoglycan homologue) was observed. Recombinant alpha-sarcoglycan adenovirus injection into Sgca-deficient muscles restored the sarcoglycan complex and sarcospan to the membrane. We propose that the sarcoglycan-sarcospan complex is requisite for stable association of alpha-dystroglycan with the sarcolemma. The Sgca-deficient mice will be a valuable model for elucidating the pathogenesis of sarcoglycan deficient limb-girdle muscular dystrophies and for the development of therapeutic strategies for this disease.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the intrasession and intersession reliability of measurements of quantitative gait variables at two self-selected walking speeds. SUBJECTS: Forty-one patients with osteoarthritis in one or both knees who were referred for physical therapy participated. METHODS: Three measurements were made at 1-week intervals. The quantitative gait variables of walking speed, cadence, and stride length were measured using an 8-m electronic footswitch walkway. At each measurement, subjects were asked to walk five times at a self-selected pace that they considered to be normal and five times at a self-selected pace that they considered to be fast. RESULTS: At the normal walking speed, although intraclass correlations were consistently high for all gait variables, an additive factor within and across the first two measurements was evident even when a mean of several trials was used. At the fast walking speed, the intraclass correlations were again consistently high for all gait variables, but there were no changes within or across the measurements. CONCLUSION AND DISCUSSION: The data suggest that quantitative gait analysis is a practical objective assessment tool for persons with osteoarthritis of the knee. Gait at the fast walking speed, however, will provide the more reliable stable measure on which to evaluate the effect of therapy when compared with gait at the normal walking speed. The comparative responsiveness to change between the two walking speeds still needs to be determined.  相似文献

This paper presents the results from field testing of a unique approach to the navigation of a fleet of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) using only onboard sensors and information provided by a moving surface ship. The approach, considered moving short‐baseline (MSBL) navigation, uses two transponders mounted on a single surface ship that alternately broadcast acoustic messages containing one of the parameters of the kinematic state of the surface ship. The broadcasts are initiated according to a predefined schedule so that the one‐way travel time (OWTT) of the acoustic messages may be used to determine the range to the transponder. Each AUV in the fleet uses the surface ship state measurements and ranges provided by the acoustic messages in two extended Kalman filters (EKFs) for state estimation. The first EKF merges the intermittent surface ship state measurements with a kinematic model to estimate the state of the surface ship. This is necessary because the presented approach uses 13‐bit acoustic messages as opposed to the more commonly used 32‐byte messages, which allow the full state to be encoded in a single broadcast. The second EKF uses the current surface ship state estimate to properly interpret the acoustic ranges, combining them with a kinematic model to estimate the state of the AUV itself. Numerous MSBL navigation experiments were compared against a more traditional approach using a long‐baseline (LBL) array of transponders and OWTT acoustic ranging. The results of all tests were verified by independent LBL measures of position.  相似文献
