Moral reasoning and moral concerns: An alternative to Gilligan's gender based hypothesis.

Studied the differences in moral orientation in terms of gender specific modes of reasoning, in 2 experiments. In Exp 1, 32 Ss (aged 24–55 yrs) were read the "Heinz dilemma," and asked 3 questions regarding it. Deliberative and justificatory strategies were identified on the basis of the presence or absence of the higher level knowledge structures. In Exp 2, 40 undergraduates were presented with "Michael and Kohlberg Heinz dilemma," followed by a set of relevant questions. Male Ss preferred to apply a norm or rule in their solutions, while females rejected the application of a norm and sought alternative solutions. This was replicated in Exp 2, but the pattern was reversed with female Ss preferring to apply a norm. Males were divided in their use of either strategy indicating that although, genders differed in their judgments as to which norms or rules to apply; once adopted, norms and rules were used in similar ways. Assessment and management of eating and feeding difficulties for older people: a NICHE protocol

Adequate nutritional intake is critical to preserving the health of older people. When an elderly person requires assistance with eating, the most social of all activities of daily living, the assessment of nutritional issues becomes multidimensional and interdisciplinary. Management strategies should involve the professional nurse's attention to dietary needs, as well as the social, cultural, and interactive components of mealtime. Additionally, special strategies need to be developed for people with cognitive and physical disabilities.     

Time-resolved chirp evaluations of Gbit/s NRZ and gain-switched DFB laser pulses using narrowband Fabry-Perot spectrometer

A compact, easy-to-use, low-cost spectrometer for solving the chirped spectrum of DFB lasers is demonstrated using narrowband Fabry-Perot etalons with resolutions comparable to grating spectrometers. Time-resolved chirp measurements of Gbit/s NRZ and gain-switched DFB laser pulses are presented.<>     

The effects of instructional match and content overlap on generalized reading performance

This study examined the effects of instructional match and content overlap on students' ability to generalize from passage reading instruction. Four students with mild disabilities served as participants. Using a multielement design, students were instructed with passages at two levels of text difficulty (instructionally matched vs. instructionally mismatched), and generalization was assessed with passages at two levels of similarity to those instructed (low vs. high content overlap). Results indicated that students' oral reading accuracy and fluency showed the greatest degree of generalization when instructional materials were matched to the students' skill level and assessment materials were similar to those used during instruction. Moreover, these results were maintained at 1-month follow-up. The implications of these findings for classroom reading instruction and the assessment of students' reading skills are discussed.
