Homophobia and psychoanalysis: A reply to Roughton.

Replies to R. E. Roughton's (see record 1994-27310-001) response to D. K. Flaks's (see record 1993-23357-001) article on homophobia and the psychologists's role in psychoanalytic training institutes. Flaks commends attempts by the American Psychoanalytic Association to combat homophobia within the organization but notes potential problems that might limit its success. Effects of chronic oral dosing with quinine sulphate in the rat

Male Leeds strain rats were given 0.1% guinine sulphate in their drinking water for up to 15 months. A high mortality rate was obtained, but no tumours arose during the 20 month duration of the experiment. However, liver parenchymal changes were observed which appeared to be associated with chronic toxicity due to quinine and did not include hyperplasia.     

A technique for liver transplantation in the inbred mouse

Action potentials of isolated Purkinje fibres and ventricular muscle fibres of canine hearts treated with ouabain and 16-epi-gitoxin were recorded by microelectrodes. Under the influence of both glycosides, Purkinje system fibres became inexcitable earlier than ventricular muscle fibres. Being exposed to 0.125 muM ouabain and 2.5 muM 16-epi-gitoxin, both Purkinje and ventricular muscle fibres became poisoned in the same time as ventricular muscle fibres exposed to 0.1 muM ouabain and 1.5 muM 16-epi-gitoxin. At the lower 16-epi-gitoxin concentration Purkinje fibres had 2.5 times the survival time of that exposed to the lower ouabain concentration. Compared to 16-epi-gitoxin the inexcitability of Purkinje fibres after ouabain remained irreversible. The semisynthetic glycoside 16-epi-gitoxin exerts a weaker effect on the specialized conducting system.     

Lesbians choosing motherhood: A comparative study of lesbian and heterosexual parents and their children.

Compared 15 lesbian couples and the 3- to 9-yr-old children born to them through donor insemination with 15 matched, heterosexual-parent families. A variety of assessment measures were used to evaluate the children's cognitive functioning and behavioral adjustment as well as the parents' relationship quality and parenting skills. Results revealed no significant differences between the 2 groups of children, who also compared favorably with the standardization samples for the instruments used. In addition, no significant differences were found between dyadic adjustment of lesbian and heterosexual couples. Only in the area of parenting did the 2 groups of couples differ; lesbian couples exhibited more parenting awareness skills than did heterosexual couples. An electron microscopic study of pig liver viability after extracorporeal storage

The effects of hyperbaric oxygenation and ambient pressure oxygenation on the viability of pig liver stored in the Vickers' transportable organ storage unit were assessed by electron microscopy. It was found that hyperbaric oxygenation resulted in marked liver damage in contrast to ambient pressure storage. Although electron microscopy proved to be a sensitive method for detecting damage induced by unsuitable storage protocols consideration is given to the possibility that other changes, which may not be detectable by electron microscopy, limit the success of liver storage.     

Homophobia and the psychologist's role in psychoanalytic training institutes.

In 1988, a settlement agreement in a federal antitrust suit secured for psychologists the right to apply for training with the American Psychoanalytic Association (the American). It is the premise of this article that this victory for psychologists also confronted them with an ethical dilemma because the American has a history of discrimination against gay men and lesbians. This article explores the ethical predicament facing psychologists who wish to train as psychoanalysts. It concludes that it is incumbent on them to be vigilant against future homophobia within the American and actively voice opposition to discriminatory attitudes or actions.
