A new frontier for clinical health psychologists: Our leadership role in the development and management of an inpatient weight management program.

The article provides an overview of the Tripler Army Medical Center Inpatient Obesity Program. Termed the LEAN Program (emphasizing healthy Lifestyles, Exercise, Emotions, Attitudes and Nutrition), it is the first inpatient hospital program completely developed, administratively owned, and directed by Department of Defense psychologists. The major components of the program are discussed, as is the conceptual framework that underlies the development. Experimental wide-stopband filters utilizing asymmetric ferritejunctions

Filters incorporating asymmetric stripline Y-junction circulators have been fabricated and tested over the frequency range of 0.05 to 18 GHz. The passband frequency was near 2 GHz. The insertion loss was ~2 dB and the stopband extended from 4.5 to 18 GHz with transmission ⩽-30 dB. The filter includes ferrite discs in which high order modes have been eliminated as calculated in an earlier paper     

Psychologists as Leaders of Multidisciplinary Chronic Pain Management Teams: A Model for Health Care Delivery.

Psychologists have the potential to improve the quality of life of chronic pain patients by intervening not only through direct services but also by using their training for promoting proactive leadership in multidisciplinary teams and in the larger health care environment. To significantly impact pain management, psychologists must not only deliver state-of-the-art care but also take an active role in directing the design, implementation, and evaluation of these programs. A paradigm shift in the scope of practice for health psychologists: Training health psychologists to be primary care case managers.

Innovative programs in the Department of Defense have challenged health psychologists to broaden their scope of practice. To this end, health psychologists at Tripler Army Medical Center independently admit and discharge patients and serve as primary care managers during hospitalization and follow-up aftercare. A conceptual overview of the Tripler health psychology training philosophy and how the training model has guided Army health psychology in managing, rather than simply consulting, on the care of patients will be offered. Microwave characteristics of high Tcsuperconducting coplanar waveguide resonator

A theoretical formulation has been developed to calculate the coupling coefficient, London penetration depth, and surface resistance of a coplanar waveguide resonator fabricated from films of superconducting YBCO material. Experimental data of the reflection coefficient as a function of temperature and frequency agree reasonably well with calculations. The formulation is of sufficient generality to be applicable to other guided structures     

Expanding the scope of clinical practice: The physical examination.

Five clinical health psychologists at a major medical center successfully completed a 36-hr, graduate-level nurse practitioner course in advanced health assessment. The psychologists were trained to conduct thorough physical examinations and evaluate medical histories. All psychologists successfully completed the course and reported high levels of comfort with their ability to (a) conduct physical examinations, (b) describe physical examination findings, (c) provisionally identify medical problems and generally abnormal conditions, and (d) make appropriate referrals to medical specialists, when necessary. The nurse practitioner instructors reported high levels of satisfaction with student mastery of course content. The role of the psychologist on the multidisciplinary pain management team.

Psychologists are being increasingly sought for expertise in the area of pain, yet many do not understand the full scope of practice. The current article describes the unique contributions of the psychologist to the understanding of the multifactorial nature of pain. This includes the assessment of preexisting or secondary psychological factors associated with chronic pain and the evidence-based psychological treatment of pain conditions. By following the recommendations outlined in this article, the pain psychologist can position him- or herself to take a positive leadership role in the comprehensive delivery of care to the pain patient. The coming age of telecommunications in psychological research and practice.

Rapid and far-reaching technological advances are revolutionizing the ways in which people relate, communicate, and live their daily lives. Technologies that were hardly used a few years ago, such as the Internet, e-mail, and video teleconferencing, are becoming familiar methods for modern communication. Telecommunications will continue to evolve quickly, spawning telehealth applications for research and the provision of clinical care in communities, university settings, clinics, and medical facilities. The impact on psychology will be significant. This article examines the application of developing technologies as they relate to psychology and discusses implications for professional research and practice.
