Forensic psychiatric expertise in brain tumors]

Dynamics of transplants of human embryonic spinal cord fragments development in adult rat spinal cord was studied in immunosuppression. Transplants were shown to take roots and their cellular elements proliferated and differentiated. The peculiarity of such transplants is the lack of rough glio-connective tissue scar. Graft development in the spinal cord depends on histoblastic potential of the tissue transplanted and recipient spinal cord reaction to the transplantation.     

Study of antiinfectious potential of recombinant tumor necrosis factor-alpha

46 patients with coronary heart disease with hypercholesterolemia were exposed to therapeutic plasmapheresis (TP) in combination with alpha-tocopherol treatment (AT). The results of 3-month follow-up with assessment of the clinical status, lipid spectrum, lipid peroxidation, concentration of ceruloplasmin indicated high hypolipidemic effectiveness of TP 2-3 weeks after the treatment as shown by inhibition of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant system. The addition of AT prolonged the hypolipidemic effect of TP, promoted optimization of plasma antioxidant potential (a rise in HDL, stabilization of ceruloplasmin levels).     

Blood levels of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone in breast cancer

In concentration of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone in blood plasma was determined in 21 healthy females and in 37 patients with breast cancer. The method of competitive binding of tritium labelled testosterone and dihydrotestosterone by specifically binding beta-globulin was employed. It was found that healthy females fail to show any age variations in the concentration of the hormones under investigation in blood. In menopausal patients testosterone concentration tends to decrease in cancer dissemination.

Spectrum of DNA haplotypes and beta-thalassemia mutations linked with them in the Azerbaijan Republic

Haplotyping of the beta-globin gene cluster was performed on DNA samples from 110 Azerbaidzhanian beta-thalassemic patients and their families. During this study, we found 18 different haplotypes and determined the frequency of their occurrence. Nine of these haplotypes have never been observed earlier in the studied population. One of the haplotypes was found only in beta-thalassemia alleles. Several haplotypes were associated with beta-thalassemia mutations found earlier in Azerbaidzhan.
