According to current face-recognition models, sex (gender) and identity of faces are processed in independent routes. Using Garner's speeded-classification task, the authors provide evidence that sex and identity are processed within a single route. In 4 experiments, participants judged the sex or the familiarity of faces while the other dimension remained constant or varied randomly. The results of Experiments 1, 2, and 4 showed that participants could not selectively attend to either sex or familiarity without being influenced by the other, irrelevant dimension. Thus, identity and sex are integral dimensions. Experiment 3 provided evidence that when sex judgments are based on hairstyle heuristics, false separability can emerge. The findings support the claim that identity and sex are processed within a single route. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The purpose of the ATIC balloon experiment is to measure the energy spectra of primary cosmic rays with individual charge resolution from protons to iron over the energy range from ~50 GeV to 200 TeV. The particle energy is measured by a bismuth germanate (BGO) scintillation calorimeter. The procedure of calorimeter calibration is described, in particular, calibration of the temperature dependence of the calorimeter sensitivity using the data of in-flight measurements. A technique for determining the energy deposited in the calorimeter in view of the temperature dependence of its sensitivity is presented. The maximum systematic error in determining the deposited energy by the calorimeter is 10% or less, and the probable error is estimated at 6%.  相似文献

There is mixed evidence on the nature of the relationship between the perception of gaze direction and the perception of facial expressions. Major support for shared processing of gaze and expression comes from behavioral studies that showed that observers cannot process expression or gaze and ignore irrelevant variations in the other dimension. However, these studies have not considered the role of head orientation, which is known to play a key role in the processing of gaze direction. In a series of experiments, the relationship between the processing of expression and gaze was tested both with head orientation held constant and with head orientation varied between trials, making it a relevant source of information for computing gaze direction. Results show that when head orientation varied between trials, the processing of facial expression was not interfered with gaze direction, and conversely, the processing of gaze could be made without being interfered from irrelevant variations in expression. These findings suggest that the processing of gaze and the processing of expression are not functionally interconnected as was previously assumed. Standard, low-order, finite element methods for wave phenomena entail considerable computational effort at short wavelengths in order to control numerical dispersion and pollution errors. Stabilized methods such as Galerkin/least-squares combine improvement in performance with simple implementation. The mesh-dependent stability parameter is often defined by dispersion considerations. The application to elastic waves must account for polarization errors as well. The present work extends previous studies by considering two-parameter stabilization for plane elastic waves. A promising definition of the stability parameters eliminates dispersion errors of both longitudinal and transverse waves, but leads to considerable deterioration of the polarization. An alternative definition that eliminates dispersion of longitudinal waves in two directions balances dispersion and polarization errors, and provides the best overall performance.  相似文献

Repetition priming for faces was examined in a sex-judgment task given at test. Priming was found for edited, hair-removed photos of unfamiliar and familiar faces after a single presentation at study. Priming was also observed for the edited photos when study and test faces were different exemplars. Priming was not observed, however, when sex judgments were made at test to photos of complete, hair-included faces. These findings were interpreted by assuming that, for edited faces, internal features are attended, thereby activating face-recognition units that support performance. With complete faces, however, participants provided speeded judgments based primarily on the hairstyle. It is suggested that, for both familiar and unfamiliar faces, a common locus exists for the processing of the identity of a face and its sex. A single face-recognition model for the processing of familiar and unfamiliar faces is advocated. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The effects of familiarity on selective attention for the identity and expression of faces were tested using Garner's speeded-classification task. In 2 experiments, participants classified expression (or identity) of familiar and unfamiliar faces while the irrelevant dimension of identity (or expression) was either held constant (baseline condition) or varied randomly (filtering condition). Selective attention was measured by the difference in performance between these 2 conditions. Failure of selective attention was larger for familiar than for unfamiliar faces. In addition, failure of selective attention was found both for identity and for expression judgments. These findings show that familiarity increases (he perceptual integrality between identity and expression, and they question previous studies arguing that identity judgments are always resistant to irrelevant variations in expression. The authors suggest that the systems processing identity and expression are interconnected in that facial identity serves as a reference from which expressions can be more easily derived.
