Administered relational size problems in the context of ordinal series to 72 4-5 yr olds. Solution was facilitated when Ss were directed to locate a terminal member (the smallest) of the series. In contrast, Ss who were instructed to locate a nonterminal member without prior designation of a terminal member were unable to achieve solution of the problem. Age- and sex-related differences in performance were observed as well as differences associated with stimulus arrangements and stimulus sizes. The principles and methods for constructing an improved chamber for dehydration and critical point drying of multiple biological samples are described. The specimen chamber design is based on vertical positioning of the electron microscope grids or coverslips and permits minimal perturbation of laminar solvent flow past the specimens. This condition is requisite for optimal exposure of samples to solvents, which is necessary for complete dehydration and drying. Fragile samples, including chromosomes, critical point dried in the multisample chamber demonstrate crisp, well-preserved, three-dimensional morphology.  相似文献

We compare the predictions of extended kinetic theory (EKT), where the roles of surface friction and correlation in fluctuation velocities are taken into account, with discrete element simulations of steady, fully-developed, inclined flows of identical spheres over bumpy bases, in the presence and absence of flat, frictional sidewalls. We show that the constitutive relation for the pressure of EKT must be modified in the proximity of the boundary, because of the influence of excluded volume and shielding associated with collisions of particles with the boundary itself. We also note that currently available boundary conditions for flows over bumpy planes in kinetic theory underestimate the energy dissipation. These two observations explain the lack of agreement of EKT with the simulations, in terms of the maximum angles of inclination for which steady, fully-developed flows are possible. That is, for some high angles of inclination, EKT does not have solutions, while steady flows are predicted in DEM. However, whenever a solution to the system of differential equations of EKT does exist, the predicted distributions of velocity, solid volume fraction and granular temperature satisfactorily match the numerical measurements. The incompressible, algebraic approximation of EKT, which ignores the conduction of energy in the energy balance, admits solutions for a wider range of angles of inclination, as in the simulations, but fails to reproduce the quantitative and qualitative behaviour of solid volume fraction and granular temperature in the two conductive layers at the top and bottom of the flow. When frictional sidewalls are added to the domain, we show that the spanwise ratio of shear stress to pressure is linearly distributed in the dense core region of the flow, confirming that the sidewalls exert, on average, a Coulomb-like resistance to the flow with an effective friction coefficient which is less than half the actual particle-wall friction.  相似文献

Since its introduction by Schirmer in 1903, the Schirmer test has been widely used for the assessment of the adequacy of tear production. Although the faults of the Schirmer test have been well documented, it is nevertheless still being used to assess tear production, especially in the diagnosis of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and for screening potential contact lens wearers. Mutations of the p53 tumor suppressor gene are the most common genetic alterations associated with human cancer. Tumor-associated p53 mutations often show characteristic tissue-specific profiles which may infer environmentally induced mutational mechanisms. The p53 mutational frequency and spectrum were determined for 95 carcinomas of the upper and lower respiratory tract (32 lung and 63 upper respiratory tract). Mutations were identified at a frequency of 30% in upper respiratory tract (URT) tumors and 31% in lung tumors. All 29 identified mutations were single-base substitutions. Comparison of the frequency of specific base substitutions between lung and URT showed a striking difference. Transitions occurred at a frequency of 68% in URT, but only 30% in lung. Mutations involving G:C-->A:T transitions, which are commonly reported in gastric and esophageal tumors, were the most frequently identified alteration in URT (11/19). Mutations involving G:C-->T:A transversions, which were relatively common in lung tumors (3/10) and are representative of tobacco smoke-induced mutations were rare in URT tumors (1/19). Interestingly, G:C-->A:T mutations at CpG sites, which are characteristic of endogenous processes, were observed frequently in URT tumors (9/19) but only rarely in lung tumors (1/10), suggesting that both endogenous and exogenous factors are responsible for the observed differences in mutational spectra between the upper and lower respiratory systems.  相似文献

Asked 6-yr-olds to find non-end members of 4-stimulus ordinal sets. Ss receiving training were trained using either the height or brightness dimension and were tested on the alternate dimension. One group received training with a "point-to-end-member-first" correction procedure. A 2nd group received feedback without that correction procedure. A control group was given the transfer task only. Training with the correction procedure produced transfer scores superior to those of the other treatment groups. Interdimensional transfer of an ordinal solution strategy was shown. The findings suggest that the ability to deal with ordinal relations is available to 6-yr-old Ss and needs only appropriate elicitation conditions.
