The theory of nondissipative flow in the helium film

The necessary conditions are examined for a film in contact with its own vapor to flow without dissipation. When the local gas is in equilibrium with the vapor of a bulk reservoir, the equilibrium thickness of the flowing film is the same as that of the film at rest. For nonsteady flow, the predicted thickness depends on a nonequilibrium condition that cannot be deduced from thermodynamic arguments. A plausible form is proposed for the needed condition. It is shown that the film may be thinner than the rest value for times large compared with apparent relaxation times of the system. The results reconcile a number of experiments which had previously appeared contradictory. In addition, the theory is consistent with measurements of the convection speed of third sound and shows why previous efforts to explain the attenuation of third sound have failed.Work supported in part by NSF Grant No. GH34682.

Self-control and therapist-control: The medical model in behavioral clothing.

A case report by P. Levendusky and L. Pankratz (see PA, Vol 54:Issue 4) raises the important ethical dilemma of when and under what circumstances is the deception of a patient by a therapist acceptable. While Levendusky and Pankratz insist that their deception was in the "best interests" of the patients, one can question whether these interests can be determined without the active participation of the patient. Despite the authors' adherence to a behaviorally based treatment regime, they seem to have implicitly adopted a traditional medical model: the doctor knows best. Erratum to Glenwick.

Reports an error in the original article by David S. Glenwick (American Psychologist, 1979[June], 34[6], p.559), a misplaced line occurred in the first paragraph, third column. The paragraph should read: I share Goodstein and Sandler's (1978, p. 891) opinion that "community psychology cannot prosper within the community mental health movement" (my emphasis). Nonetheless, there are some aspects of the community mental health movement (e.g., consultation, crisis intervention, use of paraprofessionals, community education, administration of the community mental health center as an organizational system) that can prosper within community psychology, that are consonant with a community psychology orientation and can lead to mutually productive collaborative undertakings. To prevent the baby from being thrown out with the bathwater, it is these aspects of community mental health that can legitimately be embraced by community psychology without comprising its ideological integrity. Sandler's (see record 1979-22507-001) conceptual analysis of community psychology (CP), focusing on program evaluation, multidisciplinary knowledge, and the community mental health movement (CMHM). Report of the Executive Officer: 1985: Volunteerism in organized psychology.

Defines the American Psychological Association (APA) in terms of its membership, 42 divisions, publications, activities, policy-making body, boards, committees, and subcommittees. It is estimated that in 1985, APA members contributed 16,234 days, exclusive of travel time, to governance activities. The functions and needs of the central office staff are outlined, with emphasis on organizational problems currently being addressed. Editorial statement of the American Psychologist: III.

Presents an editorial statement about the publication policies of the American Psychologist (AP). About half the contents of the AP are documents that report on the activities of the Association—the minutes of the Council of Representatives, the address of the immediate Past President, and those reports of the Association boards and committees of concern to a large percentage of the membership. The remaining pieces are articles that the editorial board and the ad hoc reviewers judge to be of sufficient interest and consequence to appeal to the large and heterogeneous readership of the AP. These articles should explicitly address the broadest scientific and practical implications of the topic under consideration. In addition, a new series, tentatively called "Science Watch," will appear in the AP on an irregular basis. The purpose will be to cover articles that broaden our understanding of the discipline, that enable us to understand the connections between our discipline and others, and that help us glimpse the directions in which our science is moving. Measuring the Heat Capacity of Superfluid 4He in the Presence of a Heat Flux Near Tλ: Progress and Prospects

It has been predicted that the heat capacity of superfluid ⁴ He will diverge strongly at a depressed transition temperature in the presence of a constant heat flux, Q. We have built a cell to measure this effect, and have taken preliminary measurements at various heat flux values. Our data indicate an enhancement of the heat capacity that varies as a function of Q. However, the temperature dependence of our measurements leads us to believe that our initial findings were affected by spurious heat flow.
