This article describes the phenomenon of morphological instability in solid-solid phase transformations during thin-film interdiffusion, specifically related to the initial stages of precipitation when phase growth occurs along the interface between thin films. The experimental observations that revealed this effect will be presented, and a working hypothesis will be discussed. Experimental observations suggest that the ledge mechanism of growth is present in this system but does not inhibit the formation of interfacial instabilities. It is proposed that morphological stability for solid-phase growth occurring during thin-film interdiffusion can be treated by the inclusion of a solute-source term into the two-dimensional perturbation approach generally used to study unstable growth morphologies. Experimental observations that provide qualitative and semiquantitative support for the solute-source model are also presented.  相似文献

Solid solutions of 2H -SiC/AlN can be prepared at temperatures less than 1600°C by rapid pyrolysis ("hot drop") of mixtures of [(Me3Si)0.80((CH2=CH)MeSi)1.0(MeHSi)0.35] n (VPS) or [MeHSiCH2] n (MPCS) with [R2AlNH2]3, where R=Et, i -Bu or simply by slow pyrolysis of the precursor mixture in the case of [Et2AlNH2]3. In contrast, slow pyrolysis of mixtures of VPS or MPCS with [ i -Bu2AlNH2]3 yields a composite of 2 H -AlN and 3 C -SiC at 1600°C, which transforms into a single 2 H -SiC/AlN solid solution on heating to 2000°C. The influences of the nature of the precursor and processing conditions on the structure, composition, and purity of the SiC/AlN materials are discussed.  相似文献

In sensory hair cells of the cochlea, deflection of the stereociliary bundle results in direct mechanical gating of mechanoelectrical transduction channels, a function generally attributed to the tip link running between the tips of short stereocilia and the sides of adjacent taller ones. However, immunocytochemical experiments indicate that the channels may not be associated with the tip link but occur just below it in a region of contact between the stereocilia. To determine whether transduction channels in this location could be operated during physiologically appropriate deflections as effectively by shear displacement as if they were associated with the tip link, a two dimensional kinematic analysis of relative motion between stereocilia has been performed assuming contact between stereocilia is maintained during deflection. Bundle geometry and dimensions were determined from transmission electron micrographs of hair cells from several frequency locations between 0.27 and 13.00 kHz in the guinea-pig cochlea. The analysis indicates that for a 10 nm deflection of the tallest stereocilia of both inner and outer hair cells, i.e. within the range of the maximum sensitivity of mammalian hair bundles, the average shear displacement in the contact region would be 1.6 nm, but that it increases systematically towards higher frequency regions for outer hair cells. This displacement is comparable in magnitude to tip-link elongation for individual stereociliary pairs.  相似文献

The tensile properties of latex coatings were investigated with a set of custom formulated artist-type paints at an age of 1 year. All films in the study contained a poly(methyl methacrylate-cobutyl acrylate) binder exhibiting a glass-transition at approximately 10 °C. The viscoelastic behaviour of the latex matrix is first highlighted through a series of experiments involving different strain histories and temperatures. Influence of the inorganic particle concentration and geometry is then illustrated using TiO2 and calcined kaolin for the secondary phase. Experimental data from a wide range of conditions are summarised through master curves of secant modulus and failure strains using time–temperature superposition. The results indicate that the latex films behave in a rheologically simple manner and it is possible to predict the response outside of the experimental time-scale. An analysis by similar methods is also given for TiO2 pigmented films with/without surfactant removed by immersion in water. Differential scanning calorimetry and atomic force microscopy were also used in conjunction with mechanical tests. The combined findings suggest that a fraction of surfactant migrates to the TiO2 interface during film formation, where it interferes with adhesion of the acrylic matrix.  相似文献

The ability of nonproteolytic Clostridium botulinum type B spores to grow and produce toxin in cooked, uncured turkey packaged under modified atmospheres was investigated at refrigeration and mild to moderate abuse temperatures. Cook-in-bag turkey breast was carved into small chunks, surface-inoculated with a mixture of nonproteolytic C. botulinum type B spores, packaged in O2-impermeable bags under two modified atmospheres (100% N2 and 30% CO2:70% N2), and stored at 4, 10, and 15 degrees C. Samples were analyzed for botulinal toxin and indigenous microorganisms, as well as subjected to sensory evaluation, on days 0, 7, 14, 28, 42, and 60. Given sufficient incubation time, nonproteolytic C. botulinum type B grew and produced toxin in all temperature and modified atmosphere treatment combinations. At moderate temperature abuse (15 degrees C), toxin was detected by day 7, independent of packaging atmosphere. At mild temperature abuse (10 degrees C), toxin was detected by day 14, also independent of packaging atmosphere. At refrigeration temperature (4 degrees C), toxin was detected by day 14 in product packaged under 100% N2 and by day 28 in product packaged under 30% CO2:70% N2. Reduced storage temperature significantly delayed toxin production and extended the period of sensory acceptability of cooked turkey, but even strict refrigeration did not prevent growth and toxigenesis by nonproteolytic C. botulinum. At all three storage temperatures, toxin detection preceded or coincided with development of sensory characteristics of spoilage, demonstrating the potential for consumption of toxic product when spoilage-signaling sensory cues are absent.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of normal microflora and Morganella morganii on histamine formation and olfactory acceptability in raw bluefish under controlled storage conditions. Fillets inoculated with and without M. morganii were stored at 5, 10, and 15 degrees C for 7 days. Microbial isolates from surface swabs were identified and screened for histidine decarboxylase activity. Olfactory acceptance was performed by an informal sensory panel. Histamine levels were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography and fluorescence detection. While olfactory acceptance decreased, histamine concentration and bacterial counts increased. Storage temperature had a significant effect on histamine levels, bacterial counts, and olfactory acceptance of the bluefish. Inoculation with M. morganii had a positive significant effect on histamine formation for bluefish held at 10 and 15 degrees C (P < 0.0001). The results of the study will serve in supporting U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations regarding guidance and hazard levels of histamine in fresh bluefish.  相似文献

The tensile properties of latex paint films containing TiO2 pigment were studied with respect to temperature, strain-rate and moisture content. The purpose of performing these experiments was to assist museums in defining safe conditions for modern paintings held in collections. The glass transition temperature of latex paint binders is in close proximity to ambient temperature, resulting in high strain-rate dependence in typical exposure environments. Time dependence of modulus and failure strain is discussed in the context of time–temperature superposition, which was used to extend the experimental time scale. Nonlinear viscoelastic material models are also presented, which incorporate a Prony series with the Ogden or Neo-Hookean hyperelastic function for different TiO2 concentrations.  相似文献

This article analyzes whether state-approved jury instructions adequately guide jury discretion in the penalty phase of first-degree murder trials. It examines Eighth Amendment jurisprudence regarding guided jury discretion, emphasizing the use of "empirical factors" to examine the quality of state-approved instructions. Psychological research and testimony on the topic of the comprehensibility of jury logical instructions are reviewed. Data from a recently completed simulation with 80 deliberating juries showed that current instructions do not adequately convey the concepts and processes essential to guiding penalty phase judgments. An additional simulation with 20 deliberating juries demonstrated that deliberation alone does not correct for jurors' errors in comprehension. The effects of time-of-day preferences on selective attention were tested in 2 experiments after normative work with 975 younger adults and 143 older adults verified C. P. May, L. Hasher, and E. R. Stoltzfus's (1993) finding that most older adults prefer the morning, whereas younger adults prefer activities later in the day. In Experiment 1, the cognitive effects of testing at preferred or nonpreferred times of day were examined in negative priming and related paradigms because (a) older adults typically have not shown negative priming and (b) previous research has not taken preference and testing times into account. In contrast to those tested at nonpreferred times, both younger and older groups tested at their preferred times showed negative priming. Age or testing optimality also affected other priming tasks. The mechanosensitive transducer channels of hair cells have long been proposed to be gated directly by tension in the tip links. These are thin, elastic extracellular elements connecting the tips of adjacent stereocilia located on the apical surface of the cell. If this hypothesis is true, the channels should close after destruction of tip links. The hypothesis was tested pharmacologically using receptor currents obtained in response to mechanical stimulation of the stereociliary bundle of outer hair cells isolated from the adult guinea pig cochlea. Application of elastase (20 U/ml) or 1,2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N', N'-tetra-acetic acid (BAPTA; 5 mM), both of which are known to disrupt tip links in other hair-cell preparations, led to the expected irreversible loss of receptor currents. However, the cells then displayed a maintained inward current, implying that channels were left permanently open. This current was similar in magnitude to the receptor current before treatment and was reduced reversibly by known blockers of mechanosensitive channels, namely, dihydrostreptomycin (100 microM), amiloride (300 microM), and gadolinium ions (1 mM). These observations suggest that the maintained current flows through the mechanosensitive channels. Electron microscopical analysis of isolated hair cells, exposed to the same concentrations of elastase or BAPTA as in the electrophysiological experiments, demonstrated an almost total loss of tip links in hair bundles that showed no evidence of other mechanical damage. It is concluded that although the tip links are required for mechanoelectrical transduction, the channels are not gated directly by the tip links.  相似文献
