We have measured the thermal contact conductance of several demountable copper joints below 1 K. Joints were made by bolting together either two flat surfaces or a clamp around a rod. Surfaces were gold plated, and no intermediate materials were used. A linear dependence on temperature was seen. Most of the measured conductance values fell into a narrow range: 0.1-0.2 W K−1 at 1 K. Results in the literature for similar joints consist of predictions based on electrical resistance measurements using the Wiedemann-Franz law. There is little evidence of the validity of this law in the case of joints. Nevertheless, our results are in good agreement with the literature predictions, suggesting that such predictions are a reasonable approximation.  相似文献

166 peace officers completed the MMPI and the MMPI-2 in one sitting. Results showed an overall concordance of 78% for the 2 tests when normal, high-point, and 2-point code types were grouped together and compared. A subset of well-defined profiles produced a concordance rate of 90%. Comparison of profile characteristics showed that half of the Ss produced the same high-point code type, one-third produced the same 2-point code type, 70% produced normal profiles on both tests, and all MMPI and MMPI-2 scales were highly correlated. These figures are highly similar to those found previously for 2 administrations of the MMPI. When the MMPI was compared to the MMPI-2 scored on original norms, 2 scales were found to differ significantly: Men and women both scored lower on Scale D (Depression) of the revised test; on Scale Mf (Masculinity-Femininity) of the MMPI-2, women scored higher and men scored lower. A novel algorithm and architecture for adaptive digital beamforming   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
A novel algorithm and architecture are described which have specific application to high performance, digital, adaptive beamforming. It is shown how a simple, linearly constrained adaptive combiner forms the basis for a wide range of adaptive antenna subsystems. The function of such an adaptive combiner is formulated as a recursive least squares minimization operation and the corresponding weight vector is obtained by means of theQ-Rdecomposition algorithm using Givens rotations. An efficient pipelined architecture to implement this algorithm is also described. It takes the form of a triangular systolic/wavefront array and has many desirable features for very large scale integration (VLSI) system design.  相似文献

Pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDI) produce large numbers of droplets with smaller sizes than 5 μm to treat asthma and other pulmonary diseases. The mechanism responsible for droplet generation from bulk propellant liquid is poorly understood, mainly because the small length scales and short time scales make it difficult to characterize transient spray formation events. This article describes the development and findings of a numerical atomization model to predict droplet size of pharmaceutical propellants from first principles. In this model, the velocity difference between propellant vapor and liquid phase inside spray orifice leads to formation of wave-like instabilities on the liquid surface. Two variants of the aerodynamic atomization model are presented based on assumed liquid precursor geometry: (1) cylindrical jet-shaped liquid ligaments surrounded by vapor annulus; (2) annular liquid film with vapor flow in the core. The growth of instabilities on the liquid precursor surfaces and the size of the subsequently formed droplets are predicted by numerical solutions of dispersion equations. The droplet size predictions were compared with phase doppler anemometry (PDA) data and the predictions were in good agreement with the number mean diameter D10, which is representative of the respirable droplets. The temporal behavior of droplet size production was captured consistently well during the period of the first 95% of the propellant mass emission. The outcome of our modeling activities also suggests that, in addition to saturated vapor pressure of the propellant, its viscosity and surface tension are also key properties that govern pMDI droplet size.

Recent studies have added substantially to our knowledge of spatial and temporal trends of persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals in the Canadian Arctic marine ecosystem. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge of contaminants in marine biota in the Canadian Arctic and where possible, discusses biological effects. The geographic coverage of information on contaminants such as persistent organochlorines (OCs) (PCBs, DDT- and chlordane-related compounds, hexachlorocyclohexanes, toxaphene) and heavy metals (mercury, selenium, cadmium, lead) in tissues of marine mammal and sea birds is relatively complete. All major beluga, ringed seal and polar bear stocks along with several major sea bird colonies have been sampled and analysed for OC and heavy metal contaminants. Studies on contaminants in walrus are limited to Foxe Basin and northern Québec stocks, while migratory harp seals have only been studied recently at one location. Contaminant measurements in bearded seal, harbour seal, bowhead whale and killer whale tissues from the Canadian Arctic are very limited or non-existent. Many of the temporal trend data for contaminants in Canadian Arctic biota are confounded by changes in analytical methodology, as well as by variability due to age/size, or to dietary and population shifts. Despite this, studies of OCs in ringed seal blubber at Holman Island and in sea birds at Prince Leopold Island in Lancaster Sound show declining concentrations of PCBs and DDT-related compounds from the 1970s to 1980s then a levelling off during the 1980s and early 1990s. For other OCs, such as chlordane, HCH and toxaphene, limited data for the 1980s to early 1990s suggests few significant declines in concentrations in marine mammals or sea birds. Temporal trend studies of heavy metals in ringed seals and beluga found higher mean concentrations of mercury in more recent (1993/1994) samples than in earlier collections (1981–1984 in eastern Arctic, 1972–1973 in western Arctic) for both species. Rates of accumulation of mercury are also higher in present day animals than 10–20 years ago. Cadmium concentrations in the same animals (eastern Arctic only) showed no change over a 10-year period. No temporal trend data are available for metals in sea birds or polar bears. There have been major advances in knowledge of specific biomarkers in Canadian Arctic biota over the past few years. The species with the most significant risk of exposure to PCBs and OC pesticides may be the polar bear which, based on comparison with EROD activity in other marine mammals (beluga, ringed seal), appears to have elevated CYP1A-mediated activity. The MFO enzyme data for polar bear, beluga and seals suggest that even the relatively low levels of contaminants present in Arctic animals may not be without biological effects, especially during years of poor feeding.  相似文献

This article reports the extension to binary propellant/excipient mixtures of the multiphase model of transient internal flow and atomization in pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDIs) of Gavtash and colleagues for propellant-only flows. The work considers different accounts of the effect of less volatile ethanol on the saturated vapor pressure (SVP), viscosity and surface tension of HFA-based pMDI formulations. Representation of the SVP of HFA/ethanol mixtures by Raoult's law is compared with the empirical model developed by Gavtash and colleagues as well as different theoretical mixing rules for surface tension and viscosity. For initial ethanol contents ranging from 0 to 20% by mass, the temperature, pressure and spray velocity were predicted to be almost independent of ethanol concentration when using the empirical SVP model of Gavtash and colleagues. The predicted aerosol droplet size increases with increasing concentration of ethanol. These model predictions compare favorably with phase Doppler anemometry (PDA) measurements of pMDI sprays. Exploration of model predictions with different mixing rules suggest that variations of the dynamic viscosity could result in 0.7 µm droplet size change, and different surface tension models yield around 1.5 µm droplet size change. The findings of this work challenge the view that the increase of droplet size is caused by the low volatility of excipients such as ethanol. Instead, attention is focused on composition-dependent viscosity and surface tension as potential controlling parameters with significant effect on the droplet size of HFA/ethanol sprays.

Despite the popularity of the pMDI as an asthma remedy, the mechanism leading to spray generation is elusive, mainly due to small length scales and short time scale, causing experimental difficulties to obtain flow information. This mechanism involves transient development of two-phase flashing propellant flow inside pMDI actuator as well as transfer of heat, mass, and momentum between the liquid and vapor phase. Variations in the rate of such interphase phenomena dictate the two-phase mass flow rate emission, which itself determines spray velocity and droplet size. In this work, we compare the performance of existing two-phase flow models to predict the flow conditions and the rate of propellant flow through a pMDI actuator: the homogenous equilibrium model (HEM), the slip equilibrium model (SEM), and the homogenous frozen model (HFM). The velocity prediction of the HFM was found to be in good agreement with phase Doppler anemometry (PDA) data indicating the metastable nature of the emitted propellant spray. This work also considers Clark's correlation for the aerosol droplet size based on the results of the flow model. The results of the correlation were compared with PDA droplet size measurements. Clark's correlation was found to be effective in predictions of the temporal droplet size variations. However, the value of an empirical constant had to be tuned to fix the droplet size for a given combination of formulation, device, and to a lesser extent also the distance from the spray orifice where predictions are compared with PDA data. This highlights the need to develop first principle atomization models without the need for case-by-case adjustment.
