Arsenate breakthrough in column studies with a porous granular ferric hydroxide (GFH) was investigated in model waters and groundwaters. In this study, the use of rapid small-scale column tests (RSSCTs) initially designed for simulating the removal of organic compounds by granular activated carbon was extended for arsenate adsorption onto GFH. Adsorption kinetic studies and a comparison of laboratory RSSCT performance versus pilot-scale performance suggests that proportional diffusivity (PD) RSSCT scaling approaches are more valid than constant diffusivity (CD) approaches for arsenate onto GFH. Adsorption densities from column tests (qcolumn) were calculated at the point in the breakthrough curve when arsenate equaled 10 μg/L in the column effluent. For a simulated 2.5 min empty-bed contact time (EBCT), a model water (pH=8.6) had qcolumn values of 0.99 to 1.5 mgAs/gGFH versus 0.02 to 0.28 mgAs/gGFH with a comparable pH and EBCT in a natural groundwater. The differences were attributed to the silica, phosphate, vanadium, and other adsorbable inorganics in the groundwater. At pH 7.6 to 7.8, qcolumn values from PD-RSSCTs in the three natural waters were comparable (1.5±0.3 mgAs/gGFH) and higher than CD-RSSCT qcolumn values (0.57±0.26 mgAs/gGFH) in the three natural waters. All the RSSCTs captured changes in water quality (source water and pH) and operational regimes (e.g., EBCTs) and could be used to aid in the selection and design of arsenic removal media for full-scale treatment facilities.  相似文献

The rising economic cost of floods in the United States cannot be explained solely by monetary inflation or growth in coastal populations. Damaging flood events are also influenced by the way society plans for and physically develops its communities, influencing where structures and impervious surfaces are concentrated and how hydrological systems are altered. We analyze 383 nonhurricane flood events in Florida counties between 1997 and 2001 to isolate how planning decisions and their effects on the built environment affect property damage caused by floods. Our results suggest that alteration of naturally occurring wetlands significantly increases the property damage caused by floods, all else equal. Also, nonstructural methods such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Community Rating System, while providing inexpensive means of reducing property damage directly, may also indirectly encourage more development in hazardous areas.  相似文献

The N-methyl-{d}-aspartate (NMDA) subtype of the excitatory amino acid receptor has been implicated in several kinds of learning and memory, as well as in long-term potentiation (LTP), a putative cellular mechanism for learning and memory. This experiment examined the role of the NMDA receptor in patterned single-alternation (PSA) learning in preweanling rats following intraperitoneal injections of 0.05 mg/kg MK-801, a selective NMDA antagonist. MK-801 significantly inhibited PSA at both 60-sec and 30-sec intervals (ITIs). and attenuated, but did not block Iearning at 8-sec . These results are compared with effects on PSA, a form of nonspatial, memory-based learning, observed; after early postnatal exposure to alcohol, infant hippocampal lesions, and infant exposure to X-irradiation, and they add strongly to these earlier demonstrartions of the role of the hippocampus in learning and memory that is clearly nonspatial and non-cognitive-map-related. The distribution and features of cardiovascular neurons (CVN) were studied in the brainstem of chloralose-anesthetized rats. Only neurons yielding an immediate response to carotid occulsion (CO) were considered as CVN. The criterion was deduced from the response patterns of cardiovascular afferent (carotid sinus nerve) and efferents (sympathetic and vagal nerves) during CO. Seventy-two CVN were identified and were observed to be mostly in the medullarly reticular formation and to some extent in the nucleus tractus solitarius and nucleus ambiguus. Fifty-five CVN (type A) decreased their firing rates in response to CO where 17 CVN (type B) increased their rates. Analyses of the time courses of their responses to CO revealed the convergence of the chemoreceptor and baroreceptor inputs onto some type A neurons. Electrical stimulation of the spinal cord evoked orthodromic responses in some neurons in both types. The evoked responses were blocked by CO in type A neurons whereas they were facilitated in those of type B. These results suggest that input from arterial baroreceptors, arterial chemoreceptors, and spinal ascending afferents is integrated within CVN.  相似文献

The thermal degradation of radiation-grafted and sulfonated FEP-g-polystyrene membrane has been investigated in the temperature range 50–650°C in an inert gas atmosphere by thermogravimetry. The evolved gaseous products were analyzed by FTIR in combination with mass spectrometry to correlate weight losses at different temperatures with molecular composition of the copolymer membrane. In inbred Mus musculus several different beta chains are known. In certain strains two beta chains are produced in unequal amounts by the two closely linked genes of the doublet breeding unit allele Hbb(d): Betadmaj and betadmin. One strain has a variant doublet allele, Hbb(p), which produces a variant minor beta chain, betapmin (the major beta chain, betapmaj, may not differ from betadmaj chain). Certain other strains have a singlet allele, Hbb(s), that produces only one beta chain, betas. Other species have different beta-chain patterns. In M. cervicolor two variant major beta chains are found, betacmaj (d-like) and betacmaj (s-like), both of which were found associated with minor beta chains. M. caroli has only one, 'Leporelike' beta chain, with structural features characteristic predominantly of betadmin chain in the N-terminal half and of betadmaj chain in the C-terminal half. The present paper presents sequence data on betas, betadmaj, betadmin, betapmin and betacmaj (d-like) chains. The data on betadmin chain cover almost the whole of that chain and show a minimum of nine differences from betadmaj chain and two from betapmin chain. It is suggested that the data on the beta chains of the various species show evidence for the past occurrence of double crossovers over regions within a gene coding for only one or a few amino acids, which events can be explained by the 'hybrid DNA' models of genetic recombination. Marine mussels can develop hemeic and gonadal neoplasia in the natural environment. Associated with these diseases are the tumor suppressor (TS) p53 and the proto-oncogene ras coded proteins, both of which are highly conserved among molluscs and vertebrates. We report, for the first time, tissue-specific expression analysis of p53 and ras genes in Mytilus edulis by means of quantitative RT-PCR. A tissue-specific response was observed after 6 and 12 days exposure to a sublethal concentration of a model Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH), benzo(α)pyrene (B(α)P). This sublethal concentration (56 μg/L) was selected based on an integrated biomarker analysis carried out prior to gene expression analysis, which included a 'clearance rate' assay, histopathological analysis, and DNA strand break measurements. The results indicated that the selected concentration of B(α)P can lead to the induction of DNA strand breaks, tissue damage, and expression of tumor-regulating genes. Both p53 and ras are expressed in a tissue-specific manner, which collaborate with tissue-specific function in response to genotoxic stress. The integrated biological responses in Mytilus edulis strengthen the use of this organism to investigate the fundamental mechanism of development of malignancy in invertebrate which could be translated to other organisms including humans.  相似文献
