Stimulus control of ring swimming was studied with male Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) using 2-component multiple schedules in which the components were correlated with the presence or absence of air bubbles in the water. In Experiment 1, either response-independent mirror presentations or extinction was juxtaposed with immediate response-dependent mirror presentations. Rates of ring swimming generally were higher with immediate reinforcement than with either response-independent mirror presentations or extinction. In Experiment 2, different durations of response-dependent mirror presentations were juxtaposed. Generally, higher rates of ring swimming occurred with 15-s than with 0-, 1-, or 3-s durations. Results demonstrate that stimulus control of responding can be established with these fish under several conditions of differential reinforcement. Anxious responding (trait, state, and test anxiety) has a negative impact on overt performance. Researchers have used a unidimensional method of assessing anxiety and performance, although a more informative approach would involve a comprehensive assessment battery and multiple performance tasks. Incorporating this strategy, the authors measured the impact of anxiety on 4 attentional processing tasks. Results revealed that "types" of anxiety symptoms were differentially related to attentional task performance; test anxiety accounted for the most variance in predicting performance on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition (D. Wechsler, 1997) letter-number sequencing and digit-span subtests, trait anxiety and fear of negative evaluation were more significant in predicting Stroop performance, and math anxiety accounted for the largest variance toward understanding Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task (C. W. Lejuez, C. W. Kahler, & R. A. Brown, 2003) scores. Theoretical and clinical implications are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The assessment of worry among older adults typically has involved measures designed with younger cohorts. Because of special concerns in assessing older adults, modifications to existing instruments may be necessary. Addressing equivocal factor analytic data on the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ) among younger adults, the authors conducted confirmatory factor analyses to evaluate the generalizability of previous models to older adults with generalized anxiety disorder. Data fit poorly with established single- and two-factor models. The single-factor model was modified, resulting in the elimination of 8 items, strong fit indices, high internal consistency, adequate test-retest reliability, and good convergent and divergent validity. Further psychometric work is required to assess whether the revised model is a more parsimonious method to assess late-life anxiety. This paper describes a laser ultrasonic probe capable of generating ultrasound by both thermoelastic expansion and material ablation mechanisms simultaneously. Because bulk wave propagation is centered around a 67° line of sight for thermoelastically generated signals, and near normal (0°) for signals generated by means of ablation, the simultaneous generation by both mechanisms results in a wider range of useful observation angles. The system described uses a Nd:Yag laser with fiber optic delivery and a focusing objective, with an independent receiver, such as an EMAT, interferometer or contact transducer. The optical fiber delivery system allows the probe to be easily positioned (i.e. using a robot), and has the added benefit of allowing a single laser to service several test sites. The focusing objective provides the means for generating ultrasound by either thermoelastic expansion or ablation, or a combination of the two mechanism. The objective also serves to protect the fiber from ablated material and manufacturing contaminants (dust, welding gas, etc.). The resulting system is both physically robust and highly adaptable for a wide range of industrial ultrasonic inspection applications.  相似文献

Although depression is prevalent among university students, limited and dated research has examined the efficacy of behavioral interventions in treating this population (C. Lee, 2005). On the basis of a modified version of the Behavioral Activation Treatment for Depression (BATD; D. R. Hopko & C. W. Lejuez, 2007; C. W. Lejuez, D. R. Hopko, & S. D. Hopko, 2001) that involved a structured single-session intervention and 2-week treatment interval, the authors conducted a randomized controlled trial comparing individualized BATD and a no-treatment control for university students with moderate depression symptoms (N = 30). Outcome measures assessed depression, environmental reward, social support, and somatic anxiety. Relative to the control group, repeated measures analyses of variance and reliable change indices indicated that the BATD group had significantly greater reductions in depression and increased environmental reward at post-treatment that were associated with strong effect sizes. A statistical trend suggested that BATD also may show promise toward increasing social support. Given current conditions in many academic institutions that include high demand for mental health services, limited personnel, and time restrictions, brief and parsimonious interventions like BATD may represent a viable treatment option. Study limitations and future directions are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Major depression is a common psychiatric disorder among cancer patients and is associated with psychosocial impairment and decreased quality of life. Although some research has explored psychological interventions with cancer patients, outcome studies investigating the benefits of behavior therapy among cancer patients with well diagnosed depression are nonexistent. The present study was a preliminary clinical trial (n=6) used to assess the effectiveness of a Brief Behavioral Activation Treatment for Depression (BATD) among depressed cancer patients in primary care. Results revealed strong treatment integrity, good patient compliance, excellent patient satisfaction with the BATD protocol, and significant pre-post treatment gains across measures assessing depression, quality of life, and medical outcomes. These gains were associated with strong effect sizes and were maintained at 3-month follow up. BATD may represent a practical primary care treatment that may remedy problems associated with traditional psychosocial interventions. Study limitations and future research directions are discussed. It may be argued that behavior therapy has proceeded with minimal regard for the therapeutic alliance (TA) as a key mechanism of change. However, ignoring the role of TA in behavior therapy may not only be problematic on a practical level, but also may be inconsistent with basic principles that underlie behavior therapy. In beginning to address these issues, the authors consider the role of TA in behavior therapy with a focus on relevant basic principles. Keeping a focus on these basic principles, the authors then outline three contemporary behavior therapies that already incorporate a focus on the therapeutic relationship and conclude with a clinical case illustration. Objective: Depressive symptoms are associated with poor smoking cessation outcomes, and there remains continued interest in behavioral interventions that simultaneously target smoking and depressive symptomatology. In this pilot study, we examined whether a behavioral activation treatment for smoking (BATS) can enhance cessation outcomes. Method: A sample of 68 adult smokers with mildly elevated depressive symptoms (M = 43.8 years of age; 48.5% were women; 72.7% were African American) seeking smoking cessation treatment were randomized to receive either BATS paired with standard treatment (ST) smoking cessation strategies including nicotine replacement therapy (n = 35) or ST alone including nicotine replacement therapy (n = 33). BATS and ST were matched for contact time and included 8 sessions of group-based treatment. Quit date was assigned to occur at Session 4 for each treatment condition. Participants completed a baseline assessment; furthermore, measures of smoking cessation outcomes (7-day verified point-prevalence abstinence), depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory–II; Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996), and enjoyment from daily activities (Environmental Reward Observation Scale; Armento & Hopko, 2007) were obtained at 1, 4, 16, and 26 weeks post assigned quit date. Results: Across the follow-ups over 26 weeks, participants in BATS reported greater smoking abstinence (adjusted odds ratio = 3.59, 95% CI [1.22, 10.53], p = .02) than did those in ST. Participants in BATS also reported a greater reduction in depressive symptoms (B = ?1.99, SE = 0.86, p = .02) than did those in ST. Conclusions: Results suggest BATS is a promising intervention that may promote smoking cessation and improve depressive symptoms among underserved smokers of diverse backgrounds. This study addressed the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), relative to minimal contact control (MCC), in a sample of 85 older adults (age 60 years and over) with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). All participants completed measures of primary outcome (worry and anxiety), coexistent symptoms (depressive symptoms and specific fears), and quality of life. Results of both completer and intent-to-treat analyses revealed significant improvement in worry, anxiety, depression, and quality of life following CBT relative to MCC. Forty-five percent of patients in CBT were classified as responders, relative to 8% in MCC. Most gains for patients in CBT were maintained or enhanced over 1-year follow-up. However, posttreatment scores for patients in CBT failed to indicate return to normative functioning. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
