Link between heart disease, cholesterol, and Alzheimer's disease: a review   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
Increased prevalence of Alzheimer's disease-like beta-amyloid deposits in the neuropil and within neurons occurs in the brains of non-demented individuals with heart disease. Heart disease is a prevalent finding in Alzheimer's disease, and may be a forerunner to the dementing disorder. In the cholesterol-fed rabbit model of human coronary heart disease there is production and accumulation of beta-amyloid in the brain. This accumulation of beta-amyloid can be reversed by removing cholesterol from the rabbits' diet. In culture cells, a cholesterol challenge has been shown to increase production of beta-amyloid, and dramatic reductions of cholesterol produced by HMG Co-A reductase inhibitors decrease production of beta-amyloid. Increased beta-amyloid production is also produced by dietary cholesterol in a number of transgenic mouse models of Alzheimer's disease. Administration of HMG Co-A reductase inhibitors may block beta-amyloid production caused by dietary cholesterol in rabbits. Clinical trials testing the benefit of HMG Co-A reductase inhibitors in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease are underway.  相似文献

Previous literature suggests that the hippocampus subserves processes associated with the encoding of novel information. To investigate the role of different subregions of the hippocampus, the authors made neurotoxic lesions in different subregions of the dorsal hippocampus (i.e., CA1, dentate gyrus [DG], or CA3) of rats, followed by tests using a spontaneous object exploration paradigm. All lesion groups explored normally an object newly introduced in a familiar location. However, when some of the familiar objects were moved to novel locations, both DG and CA3 lesion groups were severely impaired in reexploring the displaced objects, whereas the CA1 lesion group was only mildly impaired in reexploration. The results suggest that the DG-CA3 network is essential in detecting novelty for spatial, but not for individual object, information. The application of N fertilizers mixed with a surface irrigation stream (surface N fertigation) is widely practiced in the southwestern United States. Procedures for the optimal design and management of surface N fertigation systems are needed. The purpose of this work is to identify and define a set of performance indices that can be used to assess the relative merits of alternative design and management scenarios. Equations and solutions for quantifying the performance indices are proposed. Sample performance calculations are presented for a fertigation field experiment in which bromide ion was used as a tracer to simulate the movement of nitrate on the surface and through the soil profile.  相似文献

A cross-section-averaged advection-dispersion equation (ADE) model was developed to simulate the transport of fertilizer in furrow irrigation. The advection and dispersion processes were solved separately at each time step by implementing a method of characteristics with cubic-spline interpolation and a time-weighted finite-difference scheme, respectively. The upstream boundary condition was a prescribed concentration. Downstream, a zero-flux boundary condition during advance and a concentration gradient following completion of advance were prescribed. Local pseudosteady state was assumed in order to apply Fischer’s longitudinal dispersion equation under nonuniform and unsteady furrow flow conditions. Statistical parameters were used to evaluate the ADE model performance.  相似文献

This experiment was designed to determine whether adding a temporal component to an object-odor association task would recruit the hippocampus. The rats were given CA1, CA3, or control lesions prior to learning the object-trace-odor task. Rats were presented with an object for 10 s, after which the object was removed, followed by a 10-s trace period, followed by the presentation of an odor 50 cm away. If the odor and the object were paired, rats were to dig in the odor cup for a reward. If unpaired, rats were to refrain from digging. Rats that had CA1 lesions were unable to make the association, whereas rats that had CA3 lesions performed as well as controls. These results support the idea that the hippocampus is involved in forming arbitrary associations that do not necessarily involve space as long as they involve a temporal component. Field tests were conducted to obtain irrigation evaluation and solute transport data. The data were used to calibrate and validate an advection-dispersion model for furrow irrigation. The empirical infiltration equation and roughness parameters were estimated from the evaluation data. The inflow rate was measured with a volumetric meter and a flume and resulted in different average inflow rates. Hydraulic simulation results proved nearly as accurate with infiltration function estimates derived from the meter or flume data despite the difference in measured flow rate. Hence, the calibrated infiltration functions provide limited clues about possible problems with the inflow data. The choice of the infiltration equation used to fit the data (Branch versus modified Kostiakov) produced greater differences in the hydraulic modeling results. The timing and spread of the solute concentration pulses were well predicted independently of the inflow data and infiltration equation used to fit the data. However, differences between the meter and flume inflow rate were clearly manifested in the predicted peak solute concentrations. Results highlight the importance of accurate inflow measurements for parameter estimation.  相似文献

Samples were obtained for bacteriologic culturing of salmonellae from cows and calves on, and the environment of, a large California dairy that used free-stall housing and a flush system for manure handling. Two years previously, the dairy had an outbreak of clinical salmonellosis in the lactating herd; however, since that time, it had not had problems with clinical salmonellosis. On the basis of mean annual milk production per cow, this dairy was consistently ranked in the top 25% of dairies in the area enrolled in the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. Results of bacteriologic culture of 76% (108/142) of environmental samples and 48% (639/1,339) of fecal samples were positive for salmonellae. Eighty-two percent of the isolates were serovar C1, subclassified as Salmonella montevideo, and 17% were serovar E. Results of bacteriologic culture of 85% of samples of recycled flush water being pumped into the free-stall alleys were positive, as were results of bacteriologic culture of 78% of samples of herd bulk milk filters, 97% of fecal samples collected from calves being fed nonsalable milk, and 25% of fecal samples collected from cows at the time of breeding. These findings suggest that freedom from clinical salmonellosis and comparatively high measures of herd performance do not indicate the absence of salmonellae from a premises, and that hardy infectious agents transmitted by ingestion of feces can become established in the environment of modern free-stall dairies that use recycled water in their manure flush systems.  相似文献

The application of plant nutrients with irrigation water is an efficient and cost-effective method for fertilizer application to enhance crop production and reduce or eliminate potential environmental problems related to conventional application methods. In this study, a combined overland water flow and solute transport model for analysis and management of surface fertigation/chemigation is presented. Water flow is predicted with the well-known Saint-Venant’s equations using a control volume of moving cells, while solute transport is modeled with the advection-dispersion equation. The 1D transport equation was solved using a Crank-Nicholson finite-difference scheme. Four, large-scale, field experiments were conducted on blocked-end and free draining furrows to calibrate and verify the proposed model. The results showed that application of solute during the entire irrigation event, or during the second half of the irrigation for blocked end conditions with appropriate inflow rates, produced higher solute uniformity than application of solute during the first half of the irrigation event. Measured fertilizer distribution uniformity of the low quarter ranged from 21 to 76% while fertilizer distribution uniformity of the low half values varied between 62 to 87%. The model was subsequently applied to the experimental data; results showed good agreement with all field data. Water balance errors for the different experiments varied from 0.004 to 1.8%, whereas fertilizer mass balance errors ranged from 1.2 to 3.6%. A sensitivity analysis was also performed to assess the effects of longitudinal dispersivity parameter on overland solute concentrations. A value of 10 cm for dispersivity provided a reasonable fit to the experimental data.  相似文献
