As a laser pulse propagates into the atmosphere, it becomes broader in the lateral direction as a result of scattering by aerosols. The laser pulse may be described as the superposition of a central, unscattered component of reduced intensity and a surrounding scattered component. A multiple field of view lidar has been developed that makes simultaneous measurements of the backscattered power from the central pulse and multiply scattered power arising from the scattered component. Measurements from various types of atmospheric aerosols and precipitation are presented and compared with simulated returns. The results show how the multiply scattered signals are influenced by the distribution of the aerosols along the lidar path, the characteristic size of the aerosols, and the optical depth. It is shown that the multiple field of view lidar can provide meaningful, additional information about the aerosols that is not available from a conventional single field of view lidar.  相似文献

The author examines the evolving university-industry relationships in the biotechnology area, addressing the conceptual basis for such arrangements and the resultant contract issues. He examines the need for development of policies in academia that will accommodate the needs of both government and industry without harming the integrity or institutional objectives of the university. In this paper we propose an agitation method based on megasonic acoustic streaming to overcome the limitations in plating rate and uniformity of the metal deposits during the electroplating process. Megasonic agitation at a frequency of 1 MHz allows the reduction of the thickness of the Nernst diffusion layer to less than 600 nm. Two applications that demonstrate the benefits of megasonic acoustic streaming are presented: the formation of uniform ultra-fine pitch flip-chip bumps and the metallisation of high aspect ratio microvias. For the latter application, a multi-physics based numerical simulation is implemented to describe the hydrodynamics introduced by the acoustic waves as they travel inside the deep microvias.  相似文献

Extracting data from a relational data base in order to respond to a request for information requires the use of a large number of algorithms. Some of these algorithms are responsible for validating data values, others support the relational operators while others still support the basic data structures used at the lowest levels of the system. This paper recognizes that the successful operation of a relational data base management system is dependent on the organization of these algorithms and emphasizes this point by describing a coherent architecture to embrace them.  相似文献

We investigate the use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) eye-trackers to automatically detect mind wandering—a phenomenon involving a shift in attention from task-related to task-unrelated thoughts—during computerized learning. Study 1 (N?=?135 high-school students) tested the feasibility of COTS eye tracking while students learn biology with an intelligent tutoring system called GuruTutor in their classroom. We could successfully track eye gaze in 75% (both eyes tracked) and 95% (one eye tracked) of the cases for 85% of the sessions where gaze was successfully recorded. In Study 2, we used this data to build automated student-independent detectors of mind wandering, obtaining accuracies (mind wandering F1?=?0.59) substantially better than chance (F1?=?0.24). Study 3 investigated context-generalizability of mind wandering detectors, finding that models trained on data collected in a controlled laboratory more successfully generalized to the classroom than the reverse. Study 4 investigated gaze- and video- based mind wandering detection, finding that gaze-based detection was superior and multimodal detection yielded an improvement in limited circumstances. We tested live mind wandering detection on a new sample of 39 students in Study 5 and found that detection accuracy (mind wandering F1?=?0.40) was considerably above chance (F1?=?0.24), albeit lower than offline detection accuracy from Study 1 (F1?=?0.59), a finding attributable to handling of missing data. We discuss our next steps towards developing gaze-based attention-aware learning technologies to increase engagement and learning by combating mind wandering in classroom contexts.
