Accessory artificial circulation in complex treatment of experimental acute toxic pulmonary edema

In experiments on 50 dogs with toxic acute edema of the lung, induced with intravenous injection of 0.1% silver nitrate, the authors have studied the efficacy of accessory artificial circulation and "conservative" therapy. During the perfusion a discharge of the right portions, adequate extracorporeal gas metabolism, normalization of blood gas and acid-base balance were noted; an intensity of pulmonary edema is descreased. An intensive therapy for pulmonary edema was found to be more effective in association of "conservative" treatment with venoarterial perfusion and blood oxygenation.     

Accuracy of time measurements with a QUASAR-370G hybrid vacuum photodetector in Cherenkov detectors of extensive air showers

The accuracy of time measurements in the Cherenkov detectors of extensive air showers, based on QUASAR-370G hybrid vacuum photodetectors with a large-area hemispherical photocathode, is estimated. The dependence of the time measurement error on the amplitude of the output pulses from the photodetector and the light background of the night sky is determined.     

Vortex Structure and Anisotropic Superconducting Gaps in Ba[Fe(Ni)]<Subscript>2</Subscript>As<Subscript>2</Subscript>

We studied nearly optimally Ni-substituted BaFe_2?x Ni _x As₂ (BFNA) single crystals with T _C ≈ 18.5 K. In irreversible magnetization measurements, we determined the field dependence of the critical current density and discuss the nature of observed strong bulk pinning. Using intrinsic multiple Andreev reflections effect (IMARE) spectroscopy, we directly determine two distinct superconducting gaps and resolve their moderate anisotropy in the momentum space. The BCS-ratio for the large gap 2Δ _L /k _B T _C > 4.1 evidences for a strong coupling in the Δ _L -bands.     

Bacillary generalized angiomatosis in HIV infection

A unique case of generalized bacillary angiomatosis (BA) in a patient who died of HIV infection is described. Apart from widely spread skin lesions there were also manifestations in the brain, lungs, heart, esophagus and intestine. Gram-negative bacteria were found in the histological sections. Oval and roundish bacteria with a predominantly perivascular location were found electron microscopically in the archives material.     

The current course and treatment of infectious endocarditis

Clinical study of 172 patients treated in the Burdenko Military Hospital for subacute infectious endocarditis in 1980-1996 compared with 192 cases in 1950-1979. Contemporary course of the disease is attended by a few symptoms, primordiality and single-valve affection. On the grounds of antibiotics sensitivity of the most prevalent infection agents discovered in 1996, the article develops some schemes of antibacterial therapy for Streptococcus, Enterococcus and staphylococcal etiology of disease. Rational antibiotic therapy together with surgery measures reduced lethality to 14.3% for Streptococcus endocarditis, to 16.7%--for Enterococcus and to 34.4%--for Staphylococcus.     

The possibility of preserving the causative agent of plague in soil in resting (nonculturable) form

The purpose of this study was to find criteria characteristic for patients in need of care and social services. The criteria should serve as a guideline for patients and staff to facilitate care planning before discharge. The sample consisted of 49 patients, born before 1925, in need of emergency inpatient treatment, admitted to medical- or orthopaedic wards. Data of the patient's self care needs were collected by interviews, assessment of self care status and need of treatment. The patients could be divided into three groups depending on type of discharge. Group A (n = 27) discharged home, group B (n = 7) discharged to geriatric clinic and group C (n = 15) discharged and in need of further care and social services. Criteria indicating the patients further assistance from the community were in group C (medical- and orthopaedic wards) deficit in daily living activities and locomotion. Group B had an increased need of support from the physiotherapist and the occupational therapist, in locomotion as well as daily living activities The physician's assessment showed that the criteria behind the decision "no further medical treatment appropriate" and "ready for discharge" were not related to medical impairment but to lack of self care, need of care, rehabilitation and social services.     

Multigap Superconductivity in GdFeAsO0.88 Evidenced by SnS-Andreev Spectroscopy

Using intrinsic multiple Andreev reflection effect (IMARE) spectroscopy we studied superconducting properties of nearly optimal oxygen-deficient GdFeAsO_0.88 polycrystalline samples (bulk critical temperatures $T_{C}^{\mathrm{bulk}} = 49\mbox{--}52~\mathrm{K}$ ). Temperature dependences for two superconducting gaps Δ _L,S (T) ( $T_{C}^{\mathrm{local}} = 48\mbox{--}50~\mathrm{K}$ ) have been measured in the range from 4.2 to 50 K. The Δ _L,S (T) dependences were found to deviate from the BCS-like function; this suggests an importance of the k-space (internal) proximity effect between the two condensates.     

Multiple Andreev Reflections Spectroscopy of Two-Gap 1111- and 11 Fe-Based Superconductors

Using the “break-junction” technique, we prepared and studied superconductor–constriction–superconductor (ScS) nanocontacts in polycrystalline samples of Fe-based superconductors CeO_0.88F_0.12FeAs (Ce-1111; $T_{C}^{\mathrm{bulk}} = 41 \pm1~\mathrm{K}$ ), LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs (La-1111; $T_{C}^{\mathrm{bulk}} = 28 \pm1~\mathrm {K}$ ), and FeSe ( $T_{C}^{\mathrm{bulk}} = 12 \pm1~\mathrm{K}$ ). We detected two subharmonic gap structures related with multiple Andreev reflections, indicating the presence of two superconducting gaps with the BCS-ratios 2Δ _L /k _B T _C =4.2÷5.9 and 2Δ _S /k _B T _C ～1?3.52, respectively. Temperature dependences of the two gaps Δ _L,S (T) in FeSe indicate a k-space proximity effect between two superconducting condensates. For the studied iron-based superconductors, we found a linear relation between the gap Δ _L and magnetic resonance energy, E _res≈2Δ _L .
