Microprocessor IDDQ testing: a case study

The author describe their incorporation of I_DDQ testing into the design of the PA-7100LC PA-RISC microprocessor. They also discuss design guidelines, measurement techniques, results after fabrication and volume production, and suggested improvement. Their 900,000-transistor custom design supports I_DDQ testing to ensure high quality without compromising 100-MHz-plus performance     

Nomemclature of the proteins of cow's milk: fourth revision.

This report reviews the nomenclature of the milk proteins of cow's milk in light of more recent advances in our knowledge. With the establishment of the primary structures of a number of these proteins, we now have a definite identification of alphas1-, kappa-, beta-, and the gamma-caseins as well as beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. On the basis of new information on their primary structures and relationship to beta-casein polymorphs, changes in nomenclature have been recommended for proteins of the gamma-casein fraction. Although the primary structure serves as the unambiguous definition of proteins for which it is known, a more practical identification is necessary. We recommend that their behavior in gel electrophoresis under suitable conditions be employed for this purpose for all of the "major" milk proteins of raw skim milk except the immunoglobulins where, because of their heterogeneity and molecular genetics, physical parameters are less useful and their identification must be based upon antigenic determinants and their homology with their human counterparts. More work is needed and, with the accumulation of more information, additional changes in nomenclature can be expected for such proteins as the minor components of alphas- and kappa-caseins, alpha-lactalbumin, and the proteose-peptone fraction as well as further confirmation of the presence of immunoglobulins IgE and additional IgG subclasses. Additional components and genetic variants also can be expected.     

The Demand for Post‐Katrina Disaster Aid: SBA Disaster Loans and Small Businesses in Mississippi

Following Hurricane Katrina, the United States government provided billions of dollars in loans to repair the damage caused by the hurricane. However, the specifics surrounding demand for these loans and the process of application and approval for Small Business Administration (SBA) loans have yet to be fully examined. We analyse the demand of small businesses for such loans and delve into the factors which are associated with success in obtaining loan funds following disaster. Results indicate several factors are important in all of the stages of the loan process: the income of the business, whether the business had insurance or received money in an insurance claim and the gender of the business owner.     

The implementation of a 2-core, multi-threaded itanium family processor

The design of the high end server processor code named Montecito incorporated several ambitious goals requiring innovation. The most obvious being the incorporation of two legacy cores on-die and at the same time reducing power by 23%. This is an effective 325% increase in MIPS per watt which necessitated a holistic focus on power reduction and management. The next challenge in the implementation was to ensure robust and high frequency circuit operation in the 90-nm process generation which brings with it higher leakage and greater variability. Achieving this goal required new methodologies for design, a greatly improved and tunable clock system and a better understanding of our power grid behavior all of which required new circuits and capabilities. The final aspect of circuit design improvement involved the I/O design for our legacy multi-drop system bus. To properly feed the two high frequency cores with memory bandwidth we needed to ensure frequency headroom in the operation of the bus. This was achieved through several innovations in controllability and tuning of the I/O buffers which are discussed as well.     

Optimal modification of annexin V with fluorescent dyes

The many uses of chemically modified annexin Vs necessitate an understanding of the optimal degree of modification and modification sites of the protein. When reacted with the N-hydroxysuccinimide ester of Cy5.5, annexin V with one modification per mole of protein retained its affinity for phosphatidylserine of apoptotic cells, whereas modification with two dyes per mole of protein caused a complete loss of activity. A tryptic digest LC/MS method was used to identify the modification sites as either of two closely spaced lysine residues, in position 286 or 290. The crystal structure indicated the location of these lysines was distal to the phosphatidylserine binding sites on annexin V. These results can be used to develop active or inactive fluorescent control annexin V proteins and to suggest strategies for attaining higher levels of modification with retention of bioactivity.
