Dual command travel times and miniload system throughput with turnover-based storage

We analyze travel times for automated storage/retrieval systems. In particular, we apply our travel time model to turnover-based storage systems and determine the mean and variance of dual command travel times. We present detailed numerical results for selected rack shape factors and ABC inventory profiles. We then investigate the effect of alternative rack configurations on travel time performance measures. We also show how to determine the throughput of miniload systems with turnover-based storage and exponentially distributed pick times.     

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (TIPS) in children

The transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt procedure is an accepted treatment for adults with complications of portal hypertension. We performed a retrospective review of all pediatric TIPS placements performed at the University of California, San Francisco between 1990 and 1996. Twelve procedures were attempted in nine children, with a mean age (+/- SD) of 9.4 +/- 3.9 years (range, 5 to 15 years) and a mean weight of 31 +/- 18 kg (range, 16 to 70 kg). The indications for TIPS placement were portal hypertension complicated by chronic variceal hemorrhage not controlled with sclerotherapy (n = 7) and hypersplenism with thrombocytopenia (n = 2). TIPS placement was successfully completed initially in seven of nine (78%) patients. Unfavorable vascular anatomy was the cause of failure in two cases. The seven patients who underwent successful TIPS placement were followed up for an average of 136 days (range, 1 to 800 days); two still have patent shunts, three underwent liver transplantation, one had a splenorenal shunt after stenosis, and one died of underlying liver disease. Variceal bleeding was controlled in four of five patients who successfully underwent TIPS placement. Shunt occlusion occurred in four patients; patency was restored by transjugular shunt revision in three, and a splenorenal shunt was performed in one.     

Animal models of bacterial gastritis: the role of host, bacterial species and duration of infection on severity of gastritis

Gastric bacteria from cheetahs with gastritis were used to inoculate specific-pathogen free kittens and conventional mice. Helicobacter sp. and Gastrospirillum sp. colonized kittens, while only Gastrospirillum sp. colonized mice. In kittens, both bacterial species induced mild lymphofolliclar gastritis which did not change over the course of the 11 months observation period. In mice, Gastrospirillum sp. induced lymphoplasmacytic and follicular gastritis which increased in severity over 6 months and persisted for the 12 month observation period. Gastric ulcers and gastric mucosal hypertrophy were present in chronically infected mice. These results indicate that host but not bacterial factors influence the severity of gastritis, and that in mice, bacterial gastritis increases in severity with time and may lead to gastric ulceration in some individuals.     

5-HPETE is a potent inhibitor of neuronal Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity

The effects of 1 microM concentrations of arachidonic acid hydroperoxide (HPETES) products of 5-, 12- and 15-lipoxygenase on Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity were investigated in synaptosomal membrane preparations from rat cerebral cortex. 5-HPETE inhibited Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity by up to 67 %. In contrast, 12-HPETE and 15-HPETE did not inhibit Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity. In addition, neither 5-HETE or LTA4 inhibited Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity. Dose-response studies indicated that 5-HPETE was a potent (IC25 = 10(-8) M) inhibitor of Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity. These findings indicate that 5-HPETE inhibits Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity by a mechanism that is dependent on the hydroperoxide position and independent of further metabolism by 5-lipoxygenase. It is proposed that 5-HPETE production by 5-lipoxygenase and subsequent inhibition of neuronal Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity may be a mechansim for modulating synaptic transmission.     

Formulation for Reliable Analysis of Structural Frames

Structural engineers use design codes formulated to consider uncertainty for both reinforced concrete and structural steel design. For a simple one-bay structural steel frame, we survey typical uncertainties and compute an interval solution for displacements and forces. The naive solutions have large over-estimations, so we explore the Mullen-Muhanna assembly strategy, scaling, and constraint propagation to achieve tight enclosures of the true ranges for displacements and forces in a fraction of the CPU time typically used for simulations. That we compute tight enclosures, even for large parameter uncertainties used in practice, suggests the promise of interval methods for much larger structures.
