The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of one abrasive cleaner, one non-abrasive cleaner and one non-abrasive alcohol-based cleaner on the lens parameter stability of the NOVALENS. Twenty-four lenses, all NOVALENS material of identical design, were cleaned 100 times each. Eight lenses were cleaned with MiraFlow (CIBA Vision), eight lenses with Optic-Free Daily Cleaner and eight lenses with the Gas Permeable Daily Cleaner (PBH). The base curve radius, center thickness and power were verified immediately before, immediately after and (per manufacturer's recommendation) 4 hours after cleaning at baseline, 25, 50, 75 and 100 cleanings. Lens toricity of approximately 0.50D was found with all three cleaners after 100 cleanings. No change in lens power or center thickness was found. It was concluded that extreme care must be taken in handling the NOVALENS due to the potential of induced warpage.  相似文献

The evidence suggests that enrolled nurses and those working part-time and on night duty consistently attend less continuing professional education than their more senior, full-time and day duty colleagues. This was substantiated in the findings of this study which also highlighted the paucity of opportunities for continuing education among unqualified practitioners. In the light of recent developments within the health services, this inequitable provision of continuing professional education to all nursing practitioners will need to be addressed and resolved. Continuing professional education provided on an arbitrary and random basis will not afford maximum positive outcomes for clients, the service and practitioners and has the potential to increase the levels of frustration among disadvantaged groups of nursing staff.  相似文献

In 1952, the Italian art historian Ugo Procacci found behind an altar in the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence a fresco of a skeleton. The fresco was the lower thirdofapaintingdescribedby Vasari in his Lives of the Painters. The upper part of the painting, showing the Trinity above Mary, St John and of two kneeling donors, had been moved to the entrance wall of the church three centuries earlier (1570). It was a painting famous in its own time, a masterpiece of Masaccio's painted around 1425-7. This paper argues that Masaccio's Trinity straddles medieval and renaissance symbolic structures, one rooted in symbolic geometry, and the other based in narratives indebted to Christian rhetoric. It reinterprets ancient themes of temporality and a-temporality in its use of an architectural setting. The paper considers the relation to illusion and to perspective in architectural representation, and to the symbolic nature of representation. It sets the problem of temporal representation in the light of the work of Adrian Snodgrass in temporality in architecture, including his writings on mandalas. The useof'symbolandits interpretation is placed in the context of participation and ritual, that suggest an inevitable surrender of the self in an order established by an architectural setting.  相似文献

The discovery of hyperthermophilic microorganisms and the analysis of hyperthermostable enzymes has established the fact that multisubunit enzymes can survive for prolonged periods at temperatures above 100 degreesC. We have carried out homology-based modeling and direct structure comparison on the hexameric glutamate dehydrogenases from the hyperthermophiles Pyrococcus furiosus and Thermococcus litoralis whose optimal growth temperatures are 100 degreesC and 88 degreesC, respectively, to determine key stabilizing features. These enzymes, which are 87% homologous, differ 16-fold in thermal stability at 104 degreesC. We observed that an intersubunit ion-pair network was substantially reduced in the less stable enzyme from T. litoralis, and two residues were then altered to restore these interactions. The single mutations both had adverse effects on the thermostability of the protein. However, with both mutations in place, we observed a fourfold improvement of stability at 104 degreesC over the wild-type enzyme. The catalytic properties of the enzymes were unaffected by the mutations. These results suggest that extensive ion-pair networks may provide a general strategy for manipulating enzyme thermostability of multisubunit enzymes. However, this study emphasizes the importance of the exact local environment of a residue in determining its effects on stability.  相似文献

Combined backscattered electron scanning electron microscopy (BSE SEM) and confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM) have been used to put tissue mineralization data into the context of soft tissue histology and fluorescent label information. Mineralization density (Dm) and linear accretion rate (LAR) are quantifiable parameters associated with mineralizing fronts within calcified tissues. Quantitative BSE (qBSE) may be used to determine Dm, while CSLM may be used to detect label fluorescence from which LAR is calculated. Eighteen-month old Thoroughbred horses received single calcein injections 19 and 8 days prior to euthanasia, labeling sites of active mineralization with fluorescent bands. Confocal scanning laser microscopy images of articular calcified cartilage (ACC) from distal third metacarpal condyles were registered to qBSE images of the same sites using an in-house program. ImageJ and Sync Windows enabled the simultaneous collection of LAR and Dm data. The repeatability of the registration and measurement protocols was determined. Dm profiles between calcein labels were explored for an association with time. Dm was 119.7 +/- 24.5 (mean +/- standard deviation) gray levels (where 0 = backscattering from monobrominated and 255 from monoiodinated dimethacrylate standards, respectively), while modal and maximum LAR were 0.45 and 3.45 microm/day, respectively. Coefficients of variation (CV) for Dm were 0.70 and 0.77% with and without repeat registration, respectively; CVs for LAR were 1.90 and 2.26% with and without repeat registration, respectively. No relationship was identified between Dm and time in the 11-day interlabel interval. Registration of CSLM to qBSE images is sufficiently repeatable for quantitative studies of equine ACC.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a numerical and experimental study of the behaviour of a brass hopper held in a supporting structure subjected to internal explosive loading. The structure is typical of those employed during the manufacture of explosive accessories. In such processes the hopper acts as a feed for the explosive while the encasing structure both supports the hopper and provides protection to the surroundings in the event of accidental initiation. The finite element model includes representations of the explosive, the brass hopper and the steel supporting structure. The boundaries between the components are treated as sliding and separable interfaces. Analysis is performed using the Oasys DYNA3D (version 5.1) finite element program. The numerical predictions for the deformations are compared with test results. The DYNA3D finite element code is shown to be an effective tool for the appriasal of this type of protective structure under explosive loading. Both the numerical and experimental studies point the way to improvements in the current design.  相似文献

Missense mutations in the p53 tumor suppressor occur frequently in human breast cancer and influence both the prognosis and response to chemotherapy. Amino acid 175 (equivalent to murine 172) is the second most common site of missense mutations in p53 in human breast cancer. Over 95% of these mutations are arginine-to-histidine (R-H) substitutions resulting in a gain-of-function, and not merely a dominant-negative phenotype. Transgenic mice expressing a p53 172(R-H) construct targeted to the mammary gland by means of a whey acidic protein (WAP) promoter were characterized as a model system in order to determine the specific effects of this mutation on mammary tumorigenesis. Although transgene expression alone had no apparent effect on normal mammary development, transgenic mice treated with the chemical carcinogen dimethylbenz(a)anthracene developed tumors with much shorter latency than did control littermates and had a greater tumor burden. Tumors arising in transgenic mice did not exhibit either decreased apoptosis or increased cell proliferation relative to tumors arising in nontransgenic littermates, but did display increased genomic instability. Large pleiomorphic nuclei were visible in many tumors from transgenic mice, and DNA flow analysis confirmed the presence of significant aneuploid cell populations. Since these transgenic mice develop very few spontaneous tumors, while accelerating carcinogen-and oncogene-mediated tumorigenesis, this mouse model will, therefore, be useful in the investigation of early events in mammary tumorigenesis. It may also be used as a preclinical model to test newly developed chemotherapeutic strategies.  相似文献
