Displacement control crack-growth instability in an elastic-softening material

The criterion for crack growth instability in an elastic-softening material that is subjected to displacement control loading conditions is examined. A theoretical analysis of the model of a solid containing two symmetrically situated deep cracks and with tensile loading of the remaining ligament, defines the criterion for crack growth instability. The criterion is expressed in terms of the material's softening characteristics and the solid's geometrical parameters. The analysis covers the complete spectrum of material behaviour from the case where the softening zone is very small to the case where instability does not occur until the softening zone traverses the ligament between the crack tips.     

“Metallisation” of oxide surfaces observed by in situ high-resolution electron microscopy

Intense irradiation (25–40 A/cm²) at intermediate energy (400 keV) has been found to cause “metallisation” of tungsten oxide and titanium niobate crystal surfaces. The possible mechanisms and the likely consequences for high-resolution imaging of clean oxide surfaces are briefly discussed.     

Learning with belief levels

We study learning of predicate logics formulas from “elementary facts,” i.e. from the values of the predicates in the given model. Several models of learning are considered, but most of our attention is paid to learning with belief levels. We propose an axiom system which describes what we consider to be a human scientist's natural behavior when trying to explore these elementary facts. It is proved that no such system can be complete. However we believe that our axiom system is “practically” complete. Theorems presented in the paper in some sense confirm our hypothesis.     

Three-Phase Induction Generator for Single-Phase Line

Hydroelectric generators of less than 20 kilowatts can be in remote areas served only by a single-phase line. For high efficiency and low cost, a three-phase induction generator should be used. This three-phase generator can operate with balanced voltages and currents when the ``phase-splitting' circuit uses two capacitors connetted to two different single-phase voltage sources.     

Personal respiratory protection against Mycobacterium tuberculosis

The present study investigated the simultaneous occurrence of emergent stimulus-response relations (functional equivalence) and stimulus-stimulus relations (stimulus equivalence). After being pretrained and tested on two symbolic match-to-sample tasks (X1-Y1, X2-Y2), 20 4- and 5-year-old children were trained to emit specified responses to pairs of stimuli (A1-R1, B1-R1, A2-R2, B2-R2) in one setting (original training) and to emit other responses to one member of each pair (A1-R3, A2-R4) in another setting (reassignment training). Of the 18 children who responded correctly on all trained tasks, 15 emitted the novel responses also in the presence of the nonreassigned stimuli (B1-R3, B2-R4). Eleven of these children also matched same-class stimuli with one another (A1-B1, A2-B2, and vice versa). Additional tests with four of these children documented the formation of conditional response-stimulus relations (R3-B1, R4-B2) in all four children, and of conditional response-response relations (R1-R3, R2-R4, and vice versa) in two of them. Children who did not show stimulus control transfer also failed to match same-class stimuli with one another. Present findings, together with those obtained in animal research, suggest that functional equivalence can imply but does not require stimulus equivalence.     

Accelerated aging of extruded dielectric power cables. I. Controland monitoring methodology

An improved accelerated cable life test is described. Through the use of programmable logic controllers (PLCs), very precise and consistent control of the accelerated aging process has been achieved. A computer has been utilized to make continuous real-time acquisition and storage of key operating parameters possible. This precise control and monitoring methodology has permitted the study of the synergistic effects of voltage and temperature on the accelerated aging of full-sized cables in the laboratory     

The concept of an endurance limit for adhesive joints

The effect of cyclic stressing on the strength of single lap adhesive joints has been studied and a considerable reduction in strength observed when the maximum stress exceeds about 40% of the ultimate tensile strength, but whether or not a true endurance limit exists is not proven. Fallacies are shown in some of the techniques which have been proposed for studying the fatigue behaviour of adhesive joints.
