The directional effects of passive eye movement on the directional visual responses of single units in the pigeon optic tectum

We have investigated the visual responses of 184 single units located in the superficial layers of the optic tectum (OT) of the decerebrate, paralysed pigeon. Visual responses were similar to those reported in non-decerebrate preparations; most units responded best to moving visual stimuli, 18% were directionally selective (they had a clear preference for a particular direction of visual stimulus movement), 76% were plane-selective (they responded to movement in either direction in a particular plane). However, we also found that a high proportion of units showed some sensitivity to the orientation of visual stimuli. We examined the effects of extraocular muscle (EOM) afferent signals, induced by passive eye movement (PEM), on the directional visual responses of units. Visual responses were most modified by particular directions of eye movement, although there was no unique relationship between the direction of visual stimulus movement to which an individual unit responded best and the direction of eye movement that caused the greatest modification of that visual response. The results show that EOM afferent signals, carrying information concerning the direction of eye movement, reach the superficial layers of the OT in the pigeon and there modify the visual responses of units in a manner that suggests some role for these signals in the processing of visual information.     

Coaggregation of oral lactobacilli with streptococci from the oral cavity

The ability of oral lactobacilli to coaggregate with streptococci and actinomycetes was investigated. Of the 7 species of lactobacilli studied, only two were capable of coaggregation and the coaggregation was restricted to streptococci. Lactobacillus salivarius strains (2/4) coaggregated with Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus gordonii, Streptococcus crista and tufted Streptococcus sanguis II strains. Lactobacillus fermentum (2/3) coaggregated with S. gordonii and S. sanguis. The coaggregation between L. salivarius and S. salivarius, S. gordonii or tufted S. sanguis II strains was mediated by a protein on the surface of the lactobacilli and was not inhibited by lactose. The coaggregation between L. fermentum and the streptococci was mediated by protein on the surface of the streptococci and was inhibited by lactose.     

Methotrexate treatment of idiopathic granulomatous hepatitis

OBJECTIVE: To test the efficacy and safety of low-dose oral pulse methotrexate therapy in patients with idiopathic granulomatous hepatitis who had complications of, did not respond to, or refused glucocorticoid therapy. DESIGN: Prospective case study. SETTING: Academic medical center hospital. PATIENTS: Seven patients with biopsy-proven, idiopathic granulomatous hepatitis who could not tolerate or were unresponsive to glucocorticoid therapy. INTERVENTION: Low-dose oral pulse methotrexate, 15 mg/wk. MEASUREMENTS: Temperature, symptoms, dose of concurrent glucocorticoids, biochemical tests of liver function, side effects of methotrexate, and assessment of liver biopsy specimens. RESULTS: All six febrile patients became afebrile within 3 months of starting methotrexate. Fatigue and anorexia improved in all patients. Glucocorticoid therapy was successfully discontinued within 6 months of starting methotrexate in four patients receiving prednisone at entry. Liver biopsy specimens were obtained again after methotrexate therapy and showed absence of granulomas in four of four patients. The minimum effective dose of methotrexate was 0.20 mg/kg body weight per week. No serious adverse effects and no failures to respond to methotrexate therapy were noted in this group of patients. In three patients, methotrexate therapy has been successfully tapered without signs or symptoms of recurrent disease. CONCLUSIONS: Low-dose oral pulse methotrexate was effective in treating patients with granulomatous hepatitis.     

ASPECTS OF JOINT DESIGN AND EVALUATION IN THICK-ADHEREND APPLICATIONS

Structural adhesives are gaining wide recognition by industry as they offer engineering designers greater flexibility to achieve economic and technical advantages. In the marine industry there are potential applications for adhesives in various types of construction, for example, thick steel and composite adherends, (typically 5-15 mm thick). The applications include panels and large pipes. This article is largely concerned with the use of two-part epoxy adhesives. The purpose of this article is to understand and evaluate the weaknesses of adhesives and adherends, in relation to specific applications and to use design and material selection to alleviate them. This understanding can be extended to other thick adherend applications. This article will also highlight the impact of structural epoxy adhesive technology on the design and fabrication of steel, composite, and hybrid constructions. The benefits and inherent limitations that can accrue are quantified through three case studies related to thick adherend connections.     

Polymer translational diffusion: 2. Non-theta solutions,polystyrene in butan-2-one

The diffusion of linear polystyrene under non-theta conditions in butan-2-one has been studied by Rayleigh light scattered linewidth measurements for the molecular weight range of 2.08 × 10⁶ to 8.7 × 10⁶ and as a function of concentration. By extrapolation of diffusion coefficient values to zero concentration we find that $\text{D}{}_0\text{= 5.5 × 10}{}^{\mathrm{?4}}\text{M}\text{?}{}^{\mathrm{?0.561}}{}_{\mathrm{w}}\text{cm}{}^2\text{s}{}^{\mathrm{?1}}$. The first order concentration dependence $\text{k}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>d</mtext>}}\text{c}$ changes sign as the molecular weight increases, $\text{k}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>d</mtext>}}$ being fairly small and negative at low molecular weights and increasingly positive above $\text{M}\text{?}{}_{\mathrm{w}}\text{?230 000}$.     

Design and demonstration of a high-speed, multichannel, optical-sampling oscilloscope

Free-space digital optical systems have demonstrated the capability to provide thousands of optical connections between optoelectronic chips. This dense concentration of channels creates substantial challenges in monitoring individual connections for diagnostic purposes without compromising performance. Prom the concept of stroboscopic techniques, we have designed and constructed a multichannel optical diagnostic tool that operates analogously to an electronic-sampling oscilloscope. The tool is economically constructed by the use of commercially available video cameras and video-enhanced personal computers. An integrated software application operates the tool and displays multiple-channel waveforms. We demonstrate the oscilloscope-sampling optical waveforms of a two-dimensional optoelectronic modulator array operating at data rates from 0.5 to 4 Gbits/s.     

Mild body cooling impairs attention via distraction from skin cooling

Many contemporary workers are routinely exposed to mild cold stress, which may compromise mental function and lead to accidents. A study investigated the effect of mild body cooling of 1.0 degree C rectal temperature (Tre) on vigilance (i.e. sustained attention) and the orienting of spatial attention (i.e. spatially selective processing of visual information). Vigilance and spatial attention tests were administered to 14 healthy males and six females at four stages (pre-immersion, deltaTre = 0, -0.5 and - 1.0 degree C ) of a gradual, head-out immersion cooling session (18-25 deltaC water), and in four time-matched stages of a contrast session, in which participants sat in an empty tub and no cooling took place. In the spatial attention test, target discrimination times were similar for all stages of the contrast session, but increased significantly in the cooling phase upon immersion (deltaTre = 0 degrees C), with no further increases at deltaTre = -0.5 and - 1.0 degree C. Despite global response slowing, cooling did not affect the normal pattern of spatial orienting. In the vigilance test, the variability of detection time was adversely affected in the cooling but not the contrast trials: variability increased at immersion but did not increase further with additional cooling. These findings suggest that attentional impairments are more closely linked to the distracting effects of cold skin temperature than decreases in body core temperature.     

The Washington metropolitan area

The Washington metropolitan area is rapidly reaching the point where if can truly be regarded as a ‘world city’: a seat not only of national government but also of national and international corporate headquarters, financial institutions and business services. It has become one of the most prosperous and, in many ways, urbane of US metropolitan areas. At the same time, however, it remains sharply polarized in ethnic, socioeconomic and ecological terms, and its overall development has had to take place within the framework of a uniquely unrepresentative and unresponsive system of government and planning. The city that was founded as a national symbol and a showpiece of planning has become an exemplar of the congested, fragmented and polarized urbanization of advanced capitalism.
