This field study examined applicant reactions (N = 802) toward face-to-face as compared with technology-mediated interviews (through videoconferencing or by telephone) for 346 organizations. Face-to-face interviews were perceived as more fair and led to higher job acceptance intentions than were videoconferencing and telephone interviews. Perceived interview outcomes were higher with face-to-face and telephone interviews over videoconferencing. Self-monitoring moderated the relationship between interview medium and perceptions of fairness. Specifically, this relationship was (a) positive for face-to-face, (b) negative for telephone, and (c) nonsignificant for videoconferencing interviews. Moreover, the number of offers an applicant received moderated the relationship between interview medium over, and perceived fairness. The relationship between number of offers and perceived fairness was positive for face-to-face and negative for technology-mediated interviews. Some students (base group) played the Circuit Game, a 10-level computer-based learning activity intended to help students learn how electrical circuits work. Other students (competition group) played the same game but with competition features added - including a score bar showing performance on each level, the opportunity to earn one ticket per level if a performance criterion is met, and the opportunity to win a prize based on the number of tickets earned. On a retention test given after the game, the competition group remembered significantly more than the base group (d = 0.47). On an embedded transfer test constituting the final level of the game, the groups did not differ significantly. However, on the transfer test there was a significant gender by group interaction in which men performed worse in the competition group than the base group (d = −0.54) and women performed better in the competition group than the base group (d = 0.24). Overall, adding game-like features to a computer-based learning activity caused students to pay attention to game details but did not motivate students - particularly men - to learn more deeply.  相似文献

Well designed domain specific languages have three important benefits: (1) the easy expression of problems, (2) the application of domain specific optimizations (including parallelization), and (3) dramatic improvements in productivity for their users. In this paper we describe a compiler and parallel runtime system for modeling the complex kinetics of rubber vulcanization and olefin polymerization that achieves all of these goals. The compiler allows the development of a system of ordinary differential equations describing a complex vulcanization reaction or single-site olefin polymerization reaction—a task that used to require months—to be done in hours. A specialized common sub-expression elimination and other algebraic optimizations sufficiently simplify the complex machine generated code to allow it to be compiled—eliminating all but 8.0% of the operations in our largest program and enabling over 60 times faster execution on our largest benchmark codes. The parallel runtime and dynamic load balancing scheme enables fast simulations of the model.  相似文献

Rats with hippocampal or sham lesions were trained to find food on a T maze located at 2 positions. Response rats were required to make a right or left turn. Direction rats were required to go in a consistent direction (east or west). Place rats were required to go to a consistent location, relative to room cues. One place group had distinguishable start points at the 2 maze positions, whereas another place group had start points facing the same side of the room. Controls took longer to solve a place problem than the response and direction problems when the start points were not distinguishable. Rats with hippocampal lesions were not different than controls on the response problem but were impaired on the direction and place problems. Triclosan is a widely used antibacterial agent found in many personal hygiene products. Although it has previously been established that pure triclosan and free chlorine readily react, interactions between triclosan-containing consumer products and free chlorine have not previously been analyzed in great depth. Sixteen double-blinded solutions including both triclosan-containing (1.14-3.12 mg triclosan/g product) and triclosan-free products were contacted with free chlorine at pH 7. Products detected included (chlorophenoxy) phenols, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, and chloroform. The daughter product yields were found to be highly variable and were dependent on the antimicrobial product investigated, the free chlorine to triclosan ratio, and the temperature at which the study was conducted. Lowering the temperature from 40 to 30 degrees C resulted in a decreased average chloroform yield from 0.50 to 0.37 mol chloroform/mol triclosan consumed after 1 min of reaction time for an initial free chlorine concentration of 4.0 mg/L as Cl2. At 40 degrees C the average molar chloroform yields decreased to 0.29 and <0.1 when the initial free chlorine concentration was decreased to either 2.0 or 1.0 mg/L as Cl2, respectively. Field experiments, in which Atlanta, GA and Danville, VA tap waters were augmented with various soap products, exhibited results varying from the laboratory experiments in that different productyields were observed. These differences are attributed to the chlorine demand of constituents in the tap water. A simple exposure model suggests that exposure to chloroform can be significant under some conditions.  相似文献

Describing multi‐component adsorption is fundamental to using sorption in any chemical separation. 50 years ago, Myers and Prausnitz made a seminal contribution to characterization and prediction of multi‐component adsorption by introducing Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST). A variety of human land uses involve the release of toxins into the environment. Wildlife live alongside humans across this array of land uses and thus, are exposed to varying chemical milieus. Kidneys are the principle excretory organs for vertebrates and excessive or chronic exposure to exogenous toxins can lead to renal pathology and renal failure. Although studies have linked chemical exposure to specific renal diseases across diverse taxa, none compare renal lesions occurring in wildlife living in different types of human-modified landscapes. We identify lesions characteristic of renal stress, including toxin exposure, in 82 giant toad (Bufo marinus) males living in habitats ranging from suburban to agricultural. In a previous study [McCoy K.A., Bortnick L.J., Campbell C.M., Hamlin H.J., Guillette L.J., Jr., St. Mary C.M. Agriculture Alters Gonadal Form and Function in Bufo marinus. Environ Health Persp; in press.], these individuals were examined for gonadal abnormalities, which were significantly and positively associated with percentage of agriculture at the collection site. Thus, we hypothesized the same association for renal abnormalities. We scored gross anatomical abnormalities and used light microscopy to identify tubular and interstitial lesions that have been associated with toxicant exposure in other organisms, including humans. Renal lesions indicative of tubular disease were observed at one suburban and two agricultural sites, whereas interstitial lesions were most severe at one agricultural site. Although there was no relationship between frequency of renal disease and proportion of agriculture in the collection vicinity, the renal lesions we identify are consistent with toxin exposure and are similar to those found in human drug abusers and patients suffering medication-induced nephropathy. This is the first study to describe renal lesions in a wild amphibian species and investigate the distribution of renal lesions across human altered landscapes. Indentifying the chemicals inducing renal lesions across these landscapes, their toxicological mechanisms, and their implications on wildlife health will help us devise strategies to mitigate the impacts of toxins on humans and animals living in human-modified environments.  相似文献
